Its future development needs to be carefully controlled both to preserve its beauty and the quality of life it affords its residents and to realise its potential for development for essential housing, industry and other commercial uses, in order to achieve a sustainable future for all communities. The framework for future development is provided in this statutory Districtwide Local Plan for the administrative area of Wear Valley District Council. It sets out the relevant land use policies to conserve the character and qualities of the district, and allocates sufficient land to accommodate growth over the period to 2006. It has been prepared in accordance with the relevant legislation and has been the subject of considerable public participation and debate; this adopted Local Plan reflects the input from the wider community of the District. The District Council hopes that all those who use the Plan and have an interest in Wear Valley approach the document in a positive and open-minded way. For the Plan to be a success, it requires the co-operation of all concerned. We would like to express our thanks to all those groups, organisations and individuals within the community who have commented and contributed to the content of the Plan; and to all the District Council Members and officers for all their hard work in preparing the Local Plan.
