The Forth Book 112 5- Bibliography 116 1 Introduction The Argonautica recounts the mythical voyage of the Argonauts who, on the order of King Pelias, undertake a long and dangerous voyage to Colchis, located on the southeast corner of the Black Sea (modern Georgia), in search of the Golden Fleece and, eventually, succeed in returning with it to Greece. They are led by Jason, a young hero who succeeds in winning the Fleece from Aeetes, king of Colchis, with the help of Medea, the Colchian princess expert in magic powers with whom he gets involved in a love affair, and who accompanies him back to Greece, thus providing the setting for Euripides' great tragic play of betrayal and infanticide, Medea. -

Helen, whose flight to Troy with the Trojan prince Paris had prompted the Greek expedition to seek revenge and reclaim her, is now home in Sparta, living harmoniously once more with her husband Meneláos (Menelaus). His brother Agamémnon, commander in chief of the Greek forces, was murdered on his return from the war by his wife and her paramour. Of the Greek chieftains who have survived both the war and the perilous homeward voyage, all have returned except Odysseus, the crafty and astute ruler of Ithaka (Ithaca), an island in the Ionian Sea off western Greece. Since he is presumed dead, suitors from Ithaka and other regions have overrun his house, paying court to his attractive wife Penélopê, endangering the position of his son, Telémakhos (Telemachus), corrupting many of the servants, and literally eating up Odysseus’ estate. Penélopê has stalled for time but is finding it increasingly difficult to deny the suitors’ demands that she marry one of them; Telémakhos, who is just approaching young manhood, is becom- ing actively resentful of the indignities suffered by his household. Many persons and places in the Odyssey are best known to readers by their Latinized names, such as Telemachus. The present translator has used forms (Telémakhos) closer to the Greek spelling and pronunciation. -

McPhee: The Voyage of the Argo and Other Modes of Travel in Apollonius’ Argonautica (Under the direction of William H. Race) This thesis analyzes the Argo as a vehicle for travel in Apollonius’ Argonautica: its relative strengths and weaknesses and ultimately its function as the poem’s central mythic paradigm. To establish the context for this assessment, the first section surveys other forms of travel in the poem, arranged in a hierarchy of travel proficiency ranging from divine to heroic to ordinary human mobility. The second section then examines the capabilities of the Argo and its crew in depth, concluding that the ship is situated on the edge between heroic and human travel. The third section confirms this finding by considering passages that implicitly compare the Argo with other modes of travel through juxtaposition. Stinton HE RIDDLE with its solution is a familiar pattern in early Greek Tpoetry.! Often enough it consists simply in a more or less complex periphrasis followed by the standard term explaining it, usually in apposition. A particularly elaborate and self-conscious example of this pattern occurs in the second stasimon of Aeschylus' Septem (720-23),2 where the first strophe and antistrophe each open with a riddle. The riddle is first stated in general terms, then each clue is added in a separate colon until the answer is given at the end of the fourth line: in the strophe, the Erinys, in the antistrophe, Iron; the word ct8apoc corresponding exactly in position and shape to 'EpLVVV. I The same structure is illustrated also in the first stasimon of Sophocles' Oedipus Coloneus (694ft} Again each clue has a separate colon, marked off at 696 and 698 by hiatus and brevis in longo with pause. First clue: it is not to be found in Asia; second, it is not in the Peloponnese; fourth, it is vegetable; fifth, it is a terror to the enemy; sixth, it flourishes best (or grows biggest) in Attica; it is the grey, child-nurturing leaf of the olive. The rest of the stanza tells how its two patrons, Zeus Morios and Athena, continually watch over it. The fifth clue is difficult-at least, for us-and perhaps slightly mis leading: in his invasion of Attica in 430, Archidamus had spared the sacred olives and sacrificed to Athena.3 The riddle in the strophe needs no Oedipus to guess the answer before it is made plain. -

Princeton/Stanford Working Papers in Classics Remapping the Mediterranean: The Argo adventure Apollonius and Callimachus Version 1.0 May 2007 Susan Stephens Stanford University Abstract: This paper was written for Culture in Pieces, a Festschrift in honor of Peter Parsons. Callimachus and Apollonius were poets writing in Alexandria, a newly established Greek city on the north east coast of Africa that lacked defining narratives of space, indigenous gods and heroes, or founding families. I argue that both poets turned to the legend of the Argonauts to link Libya and Egypt with Greece as a strategy in crafting a legitimating myth for the Ptolemaic occupation of Egypt. The textual argument focuses on the gift of a clod of Libyan earth to one of the Argonauts in Pindar’s Pythian 4 and at end of the Argonautica, and the Argonaut fragments at the beginning of Callimachus’ Aetia. © Susan Stephens. [email protected] Stephens -- 1 Remapping the Mediterranean: The Argo adventure Apollonius and Callimachus Recent studies have taught us the importance of landscape in the construction of the Greek imagination. Place is an intricate blend of the real and the imagined: composed of a location’s natural phenomena, like mountains and rivers; the divine associations these phenomena inspire, expressed in stories and rituals; and the boundaries imposed by culture that generate categories of inclusion or exclusion.1 Consider, for example, the immensely potent myth of Athenian autochthony and how it is articulated in the funeral oration embedded in Plato’s Menexenus.
