Dans la France de la fin des années d’après-guerre et du début des Trente Glorieuses, il a joui d’une très grande popularité. Bobet est aussi le champion breton d’une France centralisée qui s’essaie à la régionalisation et d’une province qui se modernise à grands tours de roue. Ses origines familiales sont typiques de cette époque de l’histoire du sport et elles jouèrent un rôle non négligeable dans la construction de son image et de sa popularité.

He had just completed the seven-and-a-half-mile ride up Hautacam, a treacherous mountain that rises 4,978 feet above the French countryside. It was 36 degrees and raining, and his team's director, Johan Bruyneel, was waiting with a jacket and a ride back to the training camp. But Lance wasn't ready to go. "It was one of those moments in my life I'll never forget," he told me. "Just the two of us. I said, 'You know what, I don't think I got it. I don't understand it.1 Johan said, 'What do you mean? Of course you got it. Let's go.' I said, 'No, I'm gonna ride all the way down, and I'm gonna do it again.' He was speechless. And I did it again."     Tour de France The Tour de France is the world’s most famous, and arguably the hardest, cycling race. It takes place every year and lasts for a total of three weeks, covering almost 3,500km. History of the Race During the late 19th century, cycling became a popular hobby for many people. As time went on, organised bike races were introduced and professional cycling became very popular in France. On 6th July 1903, 60 cyclists set off on a race and covered 2,428km in a circular route over six stages. 18 days after setting off, 21 of the original 60 cyclists made it back to the finish line in Paris. The winner was Maurice Garin and the Tour de France was born. Except for war time, the race has taken place every year since then and has become more challenging with the addition of mountain climbs and longer distances. The Modern Tour de France Each year, the tour begins in a different country. The route changes annually too, though usually finishes on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. In 2019, the race starts in Brussels, Belgium on the 6th July and ends in Paris on the 28th July after 21 stages totalling a distance of 3,460km. There are 22 teams taking part in the Tour de France, each with eight riders. The reigning champion is Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas. We are all very happy to see so many friends with whom we enjoy so much working all year round. I would like to start by thanking all the sponsors who have made our gathering tonight at the French Residence possible. The 14th of July is always an opportunity to revisit what is at the very core of the French Republic, the values of freedom, equality and fraternity. 2015 started with the terrorist acts in Paris which were a direct attack against the universal values of freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, freedom of conscience. The reaction, starting here in the Netherland, was of great comfort to my fellow-citizens and I would like to express once again our deepest gratitude for the very many messages of solidarity that we received from the Dutch authorities, the local governments and the Dutch people. Terrorism, which strikes all around the world, is definitely one of the biggest challenges of our time. Facing it requires a lot of unity, including within our own societies, as well as more international cooperation. The same goes for all the other challenges that we are confronted with : the challenge of migration which goes hand in hand with the desperation of people originating from areas of conflict ; the security threats linked to the unresolved tensions at the very door-step of Europe and, in this respect, we all have in mind what happened just one year ago with flight MH 17 ; the challenge of climate change which we will have a unique opportunity to address in reaching an agreement at the Paris conference on climate change at the end of this year.

The bicycle was his sword, the Excalibur next to which he died. The mountain roads of Friuli were his battleground. Throughout Bottecchia's life, heroism, mystery and tragedy are all interwoven with glorious embellishment. If Bartali was the champion of faith, then Bottecchia was the hero of war. If Bartali was the river Jordan, then Bottecchia was the Piave. Bartali was like a crusader, he had an army at his back and God on his side. Bottecchia stood alone, an embodiment of all these values. Face to face with Rommel at the Tagliamento. He was the prisoner that escaped three times. He was the champion of migrants. His footsteps have been traced by millions of Italians. Those who were cannon fodder. Those with cardboard suitcases. Those who crossed boundaries and challenged the unknown. Those who, instead of a bank account, had two counsellors: dreams and despair. First Carnera has her own shoes. They leave heavy footprints. He was the man of metamorphosis.
