Annual Conference Year, Is Best “The Yet Anticipate Exciting Andexplosive Worship Our During “Revival” Weekend GREETINGS Greetings my Brothers and Sisters, Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow! On behalf of my sister-in-law, Supervisor Phyllis, and myself, we extend greetings to each of you as God’s beloved children. We count it all joy that we have been re-assigned to do the work of the Kingdom for this quadrennium. And it has not yet appeared what God will do in South Carolina as we attempt to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. To God be the Glory for the 2021 Series of Annual Conferences for the Seventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church! As we celebrate the ministry within the local church, presiding elder district, and annual conference year, we want to reflect on how far we have come. The past year has proven to us that we possess more within us than what we ever imagined. It is only by God’s grace that we have been able to experience the awesomeness of God as you have labored in many unforeseen ways. During this annual conference experience, we will continue to adapt to new standards and protocols because of the pandemic. Your safety and health are a top priority while also maintaining the integrity of our holy conferencing Methodist system. Each session will be rich with information and tools that will inspire you and your congregation to become more effective in your execution of the mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. We also anticipate exciting and explosive worship during our “revival” weekend. Our theme for the 2021-2022 Annual Conference Year, “The Best is Yet to Come,” serves as our catalyst for a new day in the AME Church. We are striving forward, believing that our better days are ahead of us. The Seventh Episcopal District has been a staple within the denomination, providing exemplary leadership. You have been faithful unto God, even in times of need. As we move forward, we believe that the same God who showed favor to our ancestors will do the same for us today. Our prayer for you is for next-level transformation in your ministry, service, and impact within the community during this upcoming conference year. GREETINGS Carry out the mission of the AME church by putting God first, and the results will be explosive. To God be the Glory for the Seventh Episcopal District! • “Monuments of Unageing Intellect”
“Monuments of Unageing Intellect” by Melvyn New Which one of us would not dream that it might be said of his work of a lifetime: “He wrote a few good footnotes”? Simon Leys, The Hall of Uselessness. Several years ago Janine Barchas wrote an review essay of the first three volumes of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Samuel Richardson (Eighteenth-Century Life, 38.3 [2014], 118-24), entitled “First and Last,” a title reflecting the fact that the Cambridge Works will be “the first-ever annotated edition of this author’s complete output” (my italics) and her opinion that it will be the last such print edition. Perhaps this caught my attention because in the same year I had just published the ninth and final volume of my thirty-five-year project of a scholarly edition of Laurence Sterne’s works, and had opined in its introduction that “what a scholarly editor learns, and I believe my coeditors will agree with this, is that after the final volume of the Florida Sterne, nothing remains but to start over again. A new scholarly edition of Sterne’s works will perhaps not be undertaken for another decade or two, but if Sterne is to continue to be read, his work must be edited and annotated anew for different times and new readers.” Or, just as likely, her review caught my eye because I am a coeditor of four volumes in the Richardson project, a scholarly edition of Sir Charles Grandison. Whatever the reason, I found her essay-review captivating, if also disturbing, and was even temporarily persuaded by many of her cogent arguments against the seemingly endless proliferation of very costly scholarly editions in the electronic era.
