CCHA Study Sessions, 34(1967), 57-75 The Formulation of Nazi Policy towards the Catholic Church in Bavaria from 1933 to 1936 J. Q. CAHILL, Ph.D. This study concentrates on the relations between church and state in Bavaria as a problem for Nazi policy-makers at the beginning of Nazi rule. Emphasizing the Nazi side of this problem provides a balance to those studies which either condemn or defend the actions of church leaders during the Nazi period. To understand the past is the first goal of historians. A better understanding of the attitudes and actions of National Socialist leaders and organizations toward the Catholic Church will provide a broader perspective for judging the actions of churchmen. Such an approach can also suggest clues or confirm views about the basic nature of Nazi totalitarianism. Was National Socialism essentially opposed to Catholicism ? Was its primary emphasis on domestic policy or on foreign policy ? Perhaps basic to these questions is whether Nazism was monolithic in its ruling structure or composed of diverse competing groups. I believe that the question of Nazi church policy is worth studying for its own sake, but it has further implications. The materials used for this study are mainly microfilms of documents from the Main Archive of the National Socialist German Worker's Party in Munich, and from the files of the Reich Governor in Bavaria. An important part of these documents is made up of police reports, which, however, include more than mere descriptions of crimes and charges. But the nature of this material poses the danger of emphasizing those elements for which we have the most documentation. -

A historical retrospect of the Nazi Party and its leaders," (Set No, I, set of fourty) 1. November 9th 1923, the Nazi Party with Hitler as its leader felt strong enough to kick the Bavarian G-overnement out of its sad- dle. The marching Nazis when reaching the Odeonsplatz in Munich, were odered to stop. After ignoring the order tostop, they were fired upon and a total of 16 men were killed by machinegun fire. The Nazi Party thereafter was declared as illegal and was forbidden by law. Hitler himself, as the head and leader of the party was cobvicted to spend five years in jail. 2. The"BLOODFLAG", under which the first 16 Nazi victims were killed on November 9th 1923 on the Odeonsplatz at Munich* Later on this flag only was shown to the public when political events of im- portant nature took place. More or less, this flag was considered as a symbol of the party. 3. Hitler in his cell during imprisonment 1924 at Landsberg/Lech The party which had been forbidden, went underground so it couldn't be controlled by governement officials. Fin^llythe Bavarian governe- ment decided to set Hitler free because of J~oo much dangerous un- derground activities of the illegal Nazi party. 4. Adolf Hitler after becoming chancellor of the state, visiting the prison cell at Landsberg/Lech, where he spent nearly ten months. 5. Hitler, holding a speech in Munich on the stairs of the fa- mous " FELDHERRNHALLE ", eleven years after the first 16 members of his party were killed. -

In class, Hans-Georg Gadamer's concept 3f effective-historical consciousness can be used to evaluate the allegedly propagandistic messages in Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will." Analysis of this 1934 film reveals how it reinforced racial doctrines propagated by the Nazis and by scientists who sympathized with these racial views. Somewhat paradoxically, Riefenstahl's film may be considered a harbinger of twogenres in film whose essences seem contradictory: documentary and propaganda. "Triumph of the Will" contains no narration whatsoever after brief introductory remarks. Nat verbalized, these remarks are printedon successive screens in short phrases. This lack of narration reduces the critical distance between viewer and event. The opening scene features Adolf Hitler emerging from a plane to grace Nuremberg with his presence, and to rescue and transform Germany. -

Susan Sontag argued in a seminal article for the New York Review of Books that Riefenstahl’s “superb” films of the 1930s were powerful propaganda as well as important documentary art made by “a film-maker of genius.”1 She concluded that Triumph des Willens/Triumph of the Will (DE, 1935) was “a film whose very conception negates the possibility of the filmmaker’s having an aesthetic concep- tion independent of propaganda.”2 Although still an important source, Sontag’s assessment has been seriously challenged on a number of counts. -

These films shed light on the way Ger- many chose to remember its recent past. A body of twenty-five films is analysed. For insight into the understanding and reception of these films at the time, hundreds of film reviews, censorship re- ports and some popular history books are discussed. This is the first rigorous study of these hitherto unacknowledged war films. The chapters are ordered themati- cally: war documentaries, films on the causes of the war, the front life, the war at sea and the home front. Bernadette Kester is a researcher at the Institute of Military History (RNLA) in the Netherlands and teaches at the International School for Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Am- sterdam. Master of Arts, History, August, 1972, 147 pp., appendix, bibliography, 160 titles. This thesis deals with the problem of determining the reasons behind the purge conducted by various high officials in the Nazi regime on June 30-July 2, 1934. Adolf Hitler, Hermann Goring, SS leader Heinrich Himmler, and others used the purge to eliminate a sizable and influential segment of the SA leadership, under the pretext that this group was planning a coup against the Hitler regime. Also eliminated during the purge were sundry political opponents and personal rivals. Therefore, to explain Hitler's actions, one must determine whether or not there was a planned putsch against him at that time. Although party and official government documents relating to the purge were ordered destroyed by Hermann GcTring, certain materials in this category were used. Especially helpful were the Nuremberg trial records; Documents on British Foreign Policy, 1919-1939; Documents on German Foreign Policy, 1918-1945; and Foreign Relations of the United States, Diplomatic Papers, 1934. Also, first-hand accounts, contem- porary reports and essays, and analytical reports of a /1J-14 secondary nature were used in researching this topic. Many memoirs, written by people in a position to observe these events, were used as well as the reports of the American, British, and French ambassadors in the German capital. -

Musiker aus Brandenburg Kurzbiografien der in der Sonder- sammlung „Musik aus Brandenburg“ der Musikbibliothek der Stadt- und Landesbibliothek Potsdam vertretenen Musiker Stand: September 2014 1 Musiker in Brandenburg ... gab und gibt es sicher einige. Aber bekannte und berühmte doch eher nicht! So lautet wohl die landläufige Meinung zum Thema Brandenburger Musiker. Trifft man auf ein interessierteres Publikum, so fallen Namen wie Quantz, der „Alte Fritz“ oder C. P. E. Bach, aber kaum ein Name aus der Gegenwart oder der jüngeren Geschichte. Beschäftigt man sich ein wenig mit dieser Materie und das ist heute dank Internet kein Problem, so stößt man recht schnell auf den einen oder anderen bekannten Namen und stellt fest, dass sie / er in Brandenburg geboren, gelebt oder gearbeitet hat oder es noch immer tut. So war die Schaffung der Sondersammlung „Musik aus Brandenburg“ willkommener Anlass, sich mit den Biografien der in dieser Sammlung vertretenen Musiker zu beschäftigen, um sie letztlich auch unseren Lesern zur Verfügung stellen zu können. Dabei stellten sich vor allem zwei Fragen: was macht den Brandenburger Musiker zum Brandenburger Musiker und wer ist ein Musiker? Während sich die zweite Frage recht schnell dahingehend beantworten ließ, dass zu diesem Personenkreis all jene gehören, die sich aktiv mit Musik beschäftigen, egal ob sie als Komponist, Interpret, Musikwissenschaftler oder Musikbuchautor tätig sind, war die Eingrenzung des „Brandenburger Musikers“ weitaus schwieriger. Letztendlich zählen jene Musiker zu diesem Kreis, die in Brandenburg geboren sind oder mehrere Jahre hier gelebt oder gearbeitet haben. In Ausnahmefällen aber auch diejenigen, bei denen z. B. die Uraufführung ihres Werkes innerhalb des Brandenburgischen stattfand.
