Macnish) Characterisation of Community-Derived Hymenolepis Infections in Australia ii Abstract Hymenolepis nana is a ubiquitous parasite, found throughout many developing and developed countries. Globally, the prevalence of H. nana is alarmingly high, with estimates of up to 75 million people infected. In Australia, the rates of infection have increased substantially in the last decade, from less than 20% in the early 1990’s to 55 - 60% in these same communities today. Our knowledge of the epidemiology of infection of H. nana is hampered by the confusion surrounding the host specificity and taxonomy of this parasite. The suggestion of the existence of two separate species, Hymenolepis nana von Siebold 1852 and Hymenolepis fraterna Stiles 1906, was first proposed at the beginning of the 20th century. Despite ongoing discussions in the subsequent years it remained unclear, some 90 years later, whether there were two distinct species, that are highly host specific, or whether they were simply the same species present in both rodent and human hosts. The ongoing controversy surrounding the taxonomy of H. nana has not yet been resolved and remains a point of difference between the taxonomic and medical literature. -

We identified six helminth endoparasite taxa, being Phylum Acantocephala and Family Trichuridae the most prevalent. The high prevalence of the Family Ancylostomatidae indicates a possible transmission via domestic dogs, which are abundant in the study area. Nevertheless, our results indicate that the endoparasite species found are not different from those observed in protected or least disturbed areas, suggesting a high resilience of maned wolf and their parasites to human impacts, or a common scenario of disease transmission from domestic dogs to wild canid whether in protected or unprotected areas of southeastern Brazil. The goal of the present study was to identify the parasite in the specimens collected from NorthWestern regions of Iran using PCR-sequencing method. Methods: A total of 1521 stool samples were collected from the study individuals. Initially, the identification of hymenolepis nana was confirmed by parasitological method including direct wet-mount and formalin-ethyl acetate concentration methods. Afterward, PCR-sequencing analysis of ribosomal ITS2 fragment was targeted to investigate the molecular identification of the parasite. Results: Overall, 0.65% (10/1521) of the isolates were contaminated with H. nana in formalin-ethyl acetate concentration. All ten isolates were succefully amplified by PCR and further sequenced. The determined sequences were deposited in GenBank under the accession numbers MH337810 -MH337819. Conclusion: Our results clarified the presence ofH. nana among the patients in the study areas. In addition, the molecular tech- nique could be accessible when the human eggs are the only sources available to identify and diagnose the parasite. Keywords: Hymenolepis nana, rDNAITS2, PCR, Iran. -

India Received - 21.01.2017 Accepted - 30.03.2017 ABSTRACT Rattus rattus (n=65) were autopsied and their intestine examined for the presence of parasites. The intestine of 4 rats revealed whitish cestodes frequently attached to the intestinal wall and were identified as Hymenolepis nana (the dwarf tapeworm (length 22 to 43 mm; width 0.95-1.48 mm). Scolex anterior, small, globular, (diameter 0.31 mm), cup-like, tetrad (four suckers) and retractile rostellum (row of 20–30 hooks). Proglottid contains a single set of reproductive organs, genital pores unilateral. Testes three, ovary sub median, lobed (0.19-0.42 mm by 0.21-0.39 mm). Gravid proglottids (length 0.22–0.34 mm, width 0.81–0.94 mm) filled with numerous eggs. Vitellaria compact and small. Eggs slightly oval (average 53.71 X 42.29 micrometers). Infections are more common among children. It is most widespread in warm climates and around unsanitary areas where eggs can be passed through aecal matter from an infected host to an uninfected person. -

Our study includes the first records of A. tenuicir- rosa from the European (western) region of the Palearctic, and contributes to the recognition of A. horrida (sensu lato) as a com- plex of cryptic species distributed broadly across the Holarctic. Specimens of A. tenuicirrosa from Lithuania were compared to cestodes representing apparently disjunct populations in the eastern Palearctic based on structural characters of adult para- sites and molecular sequence data from nuclear (ITS2) and mitochondrial (cytochrome b) genes. Morphological and molecu- lar data revealed low levels of divergence between eastern and western populations. Phylogeographic relationships among populations and host biogeographic history suggests that limited intraspecific diversity within A. -

Sipley Approved by Jamie Oaks, Chair, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Tonia Schwartz, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences Sarah Zohdy, Assistant Professor of Disease Ecology, Forestry & Wildlife Sciences Abstract Flatworm Venom Allergen-like Proteins (VAPs) modulate mammalian and avian host im- mune responses, but their evolutionary origins and functions within symbioses (especially par- asitism) remain poorly studied. Previous studies suggest Group 1 VAPs in particular play important roles in host-parasite interactions. These studies have historically focused on taxa of medical and economic value, which represent a small number of the more than 22,000 nom- inal parasitic flatworm species. The extent to which this observation holds against increased taxonomic sampling remains unknown. To address this gap in taxonomic sampling and better understand the diversification of VAPs across flatworm diversity, we mined new transcriptome assemblies from 21 previously unsampled blood fluke species infecting 19 non-mammalian vertebrate host species, in addition to 26 flatworm transcriptomes and genomes available from public databases. We predicted (1) VAPs would be expressed across flatworm diversity; (2) Group 1, unlike Group 2, VAPs would contain signal peptides consistent with roles in host- parasite interactions; and (3) Group 1 VAPs would exhibit faster rates of amino acid substitu- tions than Group 2 VAPs. Our bioinformatics approach identified 474 novel VAPs expressed in 45 of 47 flatworm species, including 273 Group 1 VAPs (185 with predicted signal pep- tides) and 201 Group 2 VAPs (only 2 with predicted signal peptides). -

One new species of Hymenolepis is described from Cratogeomys planiceps Merriam 1895 from near Toluca, Mexico and another that we allocate to a new genus is described from Heterogeomys heterodus (Peters, 1865) from near Irazú Volcano, Costa Rica. Hymenolepis s. str. includes those Hymenolepididae with an apical organ, with no hooks on suckers or apical organ, and three testes. Hobergia irazuensis n. gen., n. sp. includes a hymenolepidid with an apical organ, unarmed scolex, small pockets termed foveolae, in which the suckers completely retract, and extremely bi-lobed ovary. Multivariate morphometric analysis showed good separation of these species from all other hymenolepidids possessing an apical organ and lacking a well developed rostellum and rostellar hooks in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions.
