Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.

Abstract Since the 1920s, multiple historically specific factors led to the automobile-saturated environ- ment of Los Angeles, contributing to a car-dependent lifestyle for most of its inhabitants. With car travel as its primary mode of mobility, and as a hub of numerous cultural industries through- out the twentieth century, the city has been the breeding ground for a number of car cultures, including hot rods, custom cars, and lowriders in addition to the large output of films and music recordings produced. In rap music of the early 1990s, producer/rapper Dr. Dre’s (Andre Romelle Young) creation of a style labelled ‘G-funk’, according to him, was created and mixed specifically for listening in car stereo systems. This article provides one case study of music’s intersections with geography, both the influence of urban geography on music production and the geogra- phy of particular listening spaces.

  • The Land of Funk” Mural on Stone Street in Downtown Dayton
Presentation: The ‘Land of Funk’ Mural By Morris T. Howard, Lead Artist These are my notes from my presentation on September 13, 2018, at the University Of Dayton. The presentation is based on the completion of “The Land of Funk” mural on Stone Street in downtown Dayton. The mural honors bands of the funk era that are from Dayton, e.g., the Ohio Players, Heatwave, Lakeside, Slave, Faze-O, Sun, and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman. I realized the need for recognition of these groups after relocating back to Dayton in April 2015. My mother had taken ill, and this was the reason I initially came back. I was driving one day and stopped at the light at the intersection of Salem and Catalpa, when I noticed a mural on the side of the old Troutman studios building. It appeared to be unfinished. I became curious as to whether there were any other murals around Dayton that honored or recognized the other funk groups from the area, and I found none. As a visual artist and lover of the music, this did not sit well with me, and ideas for a mural started taking shape. With ideas now forming in my head, I went back to my youth and the times when funk music was all over the airwaves. The 1970s were “the best of times” musically here in Dayton, and I was so proud of my city. I first heard of the Ohio Players when I was about eleven or twelve years old. A classmate of mine, Ralph Middlebrook, is the son of the late Ohio Players trumpet player Ralph “Pee Wee” Middlebrook.

  • THE REGINA BELLE INTERVIEW: Baby Come to Christ by Mona Austin
THE REGINA BELLE INTERVIEW: Baby come to Christ By Mona Austin (May 23, 2008) In the late eighties every "Quiet Storm" DJ on the planet was playing "Baby Come to Me," the bellowing slow jam by Regina Belle that seemingly seduced the charts overnight. Into the nineties, Belle manufactured numerous hit love songs -- "Is This Love?," "Make It Like It Was," "Show Me the Way," and "All I Want Is Forever" (with JT Taylor of Kool & The Gang) -- all well written and colored by her feminine tenor tones. Whether in a duet or alone, Regina was the embodiment of soulful grown folks music and one of the most recognizable and celebrated R&B vocalists of that period. She has four Grammys and an Oscar to her credit for "A Whole New World" (with Peabo Bryson for the Alladin soundtrack), a song that broadened her appeal to a pop audience. With formal college training at the Manhattan School of Music and Rutgers in Opera and Jazz, there are few genres she hasn't touched. Next stop: gospel. It has been the songstress' career-long wish to record a gospel album. With the recent release of "Love Forever Shines" - her first gospel recording - Belle, 44, has now joined the fray of mainstream artists who at some point return to their musical beginning, the church. In her case, she pulls from her days in the choir at Mt. Calvary Baptist church in Englewood, New Jersey where she was raised and from her family's deep roots in North and South Carolina. Her contemporary and good friend Shirley Murdock who has walked a parallel path personally and professionally (both were leading ladies in R&B and are now first ladies in their husbands' churches), appears on the album in a duet entitled "I Call on Jesus." Backed by the rare partnership of two record labels, Pendulum Records and Walker Davis Entertainment, Belle and Gospel are a winning combination.

In his teens, North “2unes” Woodall studied the playing styles of Ernie Isley, Santana, and Joe Walsh, among other R&B, funk, rock, and pop music styles. Hard work, determination, and a natural gift paid off and as a result of his exceptional proficiency with the guitar, he was quickly established with popular groups in and around Dayton, Ohio, such as The Delvones and Round Trip Ticket. North has since relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and was sought to share the stage with funk masters Lakeside, The Ohio Players, Roger Troutman and Zapp, Roy Aires, Millie Jackson, Tom Brown and Will Downing. He regularly sells out venues as the audiences know that they will be highly entertained and satisfied by tight arrangements and banging guitar solos with great licks. And the blessings continued to flow. 2unes has become a staple on the Atlanta music scene appearing in venues from the Ritz Carlton to Wind-Down Wednesdays at Centennial Park, bridging the generation gap with his unique music blend of jazz, R&B, and hip-hop. “I work for the listener and my music is designed for them. It is important to me that I give them what they want.” Woodall went on to say that he defines his musical style as being like a gumbo.
