The subjects made contact with the RCMP on their own and SAR was stood down on their 2nd day of searching. -

Abstract This research examines home life as experienced by single and married National Park Wardens, their partners and children who resided year-round in the backcountry of Jasper National Park (JNP) between 1952 and 1972. Since the establishment of JNP in 1907, park wardens were responsible for maintaining, monitoring and patrolling large backcountry districts, and used cabins as home bases and overnight shelters. Although the district system officially ended in 1969 and no wardens have lived year-round in the backcountry since 1972, these historic cabins remain in the park and are maintained for use by current park personnel. -

CROSS- COUNTRY Traversing the Canadian Rockies by rail BY LOUISA KASDON SIDELL IDYLLThe idea of taking a journey by rail sprang from an urge for life at the slower, simpler pace of the 19th century, when travel was as much about the journey as the destination. The serenity to take in the entire landscape of Western Canada—the rolling prairies, the dense forests, the soaring peaks of the Rockies—as well as the chance to read a book, sip a glass of wine, and fantasize that I was among the elite and unhurried, the kind of traveller with time and money to spare. And anyway, I’d never seen the Canadian Rockies. • Typically, I am a hurry-up-and-get-there type of trav- eller. Get in the car, catch a plane, and be where you want to be in a time frame that is measured in hours, not days. But there was something seductive for me—a hint of Old World grandeur—about the idea of an overnight train journey. My own cozy little berth. An elegant dinner in the club car. A tall guy in a uniform, tipping his hat and bellowing “all aboard!” Maybe Alfred Hitchcock would be on the platform too, with his cello case, just like he was in Strangers on a Train. • The railroad has always been important in this country. Arguably, the completion of the transcontinental railway system was the impetus for the founding of the Dominion of Canada. When the British Empire seized control of Hong Kong in 1843, visionaries realized that a railway, energized by the new steam-powered locomotives, could be the way to transport the riches of the Orient—tea, porcelain and silk—to the lucrative markets in the West. -

Community Profile Valemount British Columbia September 2010 Mayor’s message Valemount is open for business and we would love to “Let the mountains move you” and fi nd “Mountains of Opportu- nity” in our beautiful area. Valemount has good highways, roads, water and sewer systems and up-to-date telephone, cell- phone, and broadband Internet services. Valemount provides excellent services in spite of its small population. Valemount has a new secondary high school, a fully opera- tional medical clinic with three doctors and several nurses, and a new community the- atre that hosts high quality shows. The Vale- mount Learning Centre offers business and vocational courses and the College of New Caledonia Valemount campus is home of a successful outdoor tourism pro- gram—the Northern Outdoor Recreation & Ecotourism Program. The Vale- mount Community Forest is now in full operation and has been able to re- duce the impact of the sawmill closure by employing many local contractors. Tourism Valemount is strongly promoting Valemount’s summer and winter attrac- tions in Alberta and BC. Tourism Valemount also organizes and sponsors a spring and winter festival and champions the construction of a new trail system around Cranberry Marsh—a natural reserve with moose, elk, deer, and 90 species of birds. Valemount offers hundreds of kilometers of ATV and snowmobiling trails devel- oped by local groups and maintained by the Valemount Area Recreation De- velopment Association. Outdoor enthusiasts will fi nd here every opportunity for mountain biking, hiking, cross-country skiing, skating, and back-country skiing. In partnership with the Regional District, Valemount is preparing an economic opportunities plan aimed at identifying new industrial and recreational sites out- side the boundaries of the village. -
Mobility and Landscape in the Yellowhead Pass
“Lucerne No Longer Has an Excuse to Exist”: Mobility and Landscape in the Yellowhead Pass Ben Bradley ucerne was poised for posterity when it was established by the Canadian Northern Railway near the summit of the Yellowhead Pass in 1913. As a divisional point station on a new transcontinental Lrailway, it was a crucial component of a massive new transportation system that was expected to transform the northern Prairies and British Columbia into what one promoter called the “New Garden of Canada.”1 However, Lucerne was abandoned in 1923, and for the next half-century its remnants posed a problem for the government agencies that were responsible for managing British Columbia’s parks. They worried that westbound travellers developed negative first impressions of Mount Robson Provincial Park – and of British Columbia generally – due to their encounter with a cluster of derelict cabins and crumbling false- front stores. These agencies waged an intermittent campaign to “clean up” Lucerne, with their enthusiasm for the project waxing and waning according to the site’s changing relations to the corridors of mobility that traversed it. They only strove to remove traces of the town that were visible to large numbers of passersby or that appeared likely to become so in the near future. The actual presence of trespassing in abandoned buildings inside Mount Robson Park was less of a problem than the possibility that these structures would disrupt travellers’ views of park nature. In this article, I examine how mobility, the tourist gaze, and park aesthetics intersected at a famous but little-studied section of the Canadian Rockies. -
