In October of 1978, the entire Canadian Pacific stainless steel Budd-built car fleet and other cars were transferred, such as SKYLINE DOME 503 (blt 1954, below). VIA (ex-CPR) SKYLINE DOME 503 on No. 2 at Field, B.C., 28 Jul 1981 Cor van Steenis Photo THE ROUTE OF VIA RAIL’S ‘CANADIAN’ 1978 - 1990 & 1990 - 2015 The route of Canadian Pacific’s THE CANADIAN remained unchanged from the inaugural runs on 24 April 1955 until the last trains left the eastern and western terminals on 28 October 1978; over 23 years of daily trans-continental passenger service in each direction. On 29 October 1978 VIA Rail Canada assumed operations and from then their ‘CANADIAN’ traveled on CPR’s tracks, the ‘southern route’ (shown in dashed red); Toronto to Vancouver. There was no ‘Montreal’ section again until 17 June 1979, when VIA’s CANADIAN returned to Montreal, using Central Station (solid red). For a time, in the early 1980’s, VIA’s ‘CANADIAN’ ran from Montreal-Ottawa- Toronto-Vancouver (not shown on map) rather than in sections from Montreal and Toronto to Sudbury. From 15 January 1990, after severe budget cuts, the southern route was dropped and VIA’s ‘CANADIAN’ commenced running on CNR’s northern route (shown in blue). The Montreal-Sudbury section was gone; the ‘transcontinental’ now went only from Toronto to Vancouver, bypassing Regina, Calgary and Banff. C. van Steenis photo VIA Rail’s ‘CANADIAN’ ON THE SOUTHERN ROUTE (Canadian Pacific Railway Route) October 1978 – January 1990 Canadian National Central Station – Montreal – 1943 Unknown Photographer – Public Domain VIA RAIL’S EASTERN TERMINALS CANADIAN NATIONAL CENTRAL STATION - MONTREAL After the takeover by VIA of CPR’s passenger services on 29 October 1978, VIA Rail dropped Montreal’s Canadian Pacific Windsor Station as the eastern terminus for its CANADIAN; the train ran only out of Toronto to Vancouver. Then, on 17 June 1979, VIA’s re-established the ‘Montreal’ section; the eastern terminus for the CANADIAN was became Canadian National’s Central Station (above). Construction was started in 1926, was suspended in 1930 due to the Great Depression and resumed in 1939. The station opened on 14 Jul 1943. VIA No. 1 at Ashton, Ontario, 27 Dec 1979 Bruce Chapman Photo VIA RAIL ‘CANADIAN’ – THE EARLY YEARS VIA Rail is just into its second year of operation as VIA 6514 heads up Train No. 1 at Ashton, Ontario, MP23 on the Carleton Place Subdivision, on its run from Montreal to Sudbury and on to Vancouver. The consist is a mix of ex-CPR stainless steel cars and ex-CNR cars, including a steam generator car in the blue and yellow livery behind the engine. The engine is ex-CNR 6514, an FP9A built by GMD in 1957, still in Canadian National colours, but with the CN logo removed from the nose. The engine is ex-CNR 6780, built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1959. Two and a half years later, on 15 January 1990, this train will no longer travel the Montreal- Ottawa-Sudbury route; the train will run out of Toronto to Vancouver. Toronto Union Station 1935 Arthur Lane photo – Public Domain VIA RAIL’S EASTERN TERMINALS TORONTO UNION STATION Canadian Pacific’s Train No. 11, the Toronto section of THE CANADIAN, used to start its journey to Sudbury, Ontario, at Toronto Union Station; that did not change when VIA assumed ownership of the CANADIAN on 29 October 1978. The station was built from 1914-1920 for the Toronto Terminals Railway (owned jointly by the CPR and Grand Trunk Railway). It was opened on 06 Aug 1927 by Prince Edward, Prince of Wales. The station is still the eastern terminal for VIA Rail’s CANADIAN today. 1981 VIA CANADIAN TIMETABLE MONTREAL-TORONTO-SUDBURY-WINNIPEG Winnipeg Union Station – circa 1920 Library & Archives Canada - Unknown Photographer – Public Domain THE WESTERN STATIONS - UNION STATION - WINNIPEG When VIA Rail assumed ownership of the CANADIAN on 29 October 1990, it moved the station stop in Winnipeg from the CPR Higgins Avenue Station to Union Station (above). The station was built between 1908 and 1911 by the Canadian Northern Railway, Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and the Dominion Government; the first train to use the station was on 07 Aug 1911; it officially opened on 24 June 1912. 1981 VIA CANADIAN TIMETABLE WINNIPEG – VANCOUVER At this time, VIA’s CANADIAN was running from Montreal (Central Station)-Ottawa-Toronto- Sudbury-Winnipeg-Vancouver; it did not run in two sections from Montreal and Toronto to Sudbury. VIA No. 1 Brandon Manitoba 01 May 1981 Ron Visockis Photo BRANDON, MANITOBA After departing Winnipeg’s Union Station, we see the same train later that day stopped at the station at Brandon, Manitoba, 133 miles west of Winnipeg, the division point between the CPR Carberry and Broadview Subdivisions. The lead unit, VIA 1406, is having her water topped up at the stand-pipe. The train has two dome cars (a Skyline dome and a PARK car) and a mix of steel cars (in blue with yellow striping), inherited from the CNR in March of 1978, and stainless steel cars inherited from the CPR in October of 1978. VIA No. 1 east of Banff MP77 Laggan Subdivision 16 May 1982 Claude Prutton Photo ANTHRACITE, ALBERTA VIA No. 1 is here passing the site of the ghost town of Anthracite, Alberta, about 3 miles east of Banff. It was in existence from 1886 to 1904 as a coal (anthracite) mining town to supply the CPR and reached a population of 300. The train is headed up by an A-B-A lash-up, all in VIA blue and yellow and has 14 cars.     7 BRASS CAR SIDES 7 Passenger Car Parts for the Streamliners CANADIAN NATIONAL AND VIA "EASTPORT" SERIES PULLMAN-STANDARD 8 DUPLEX ROOMETTE, 4 BEDROOM, 4 SECTION LIGHTWEIGHT SLEEPING CARS (PLAN 4124A) [Part No. 173-38] When CN placed its enormous order for lightweight cars with Pullman-Standard in October, 1952, it committed itself to 52 cars in the "Eastport" series, (CN 1110-1161). The 8-4-4 mix of accommodations had first appeared in the 1947 GN Empire Builder "Pass" series, but open sections were of limited popularity by 1954 when these CN pullmans were delivered. The longevity of these cars in CN and VIA service is attested to by the fact that some of the class were the only ex-CN sleepers still running on the few steam-heated VIA trains in 1994. The April, 1955 Official Guide shows these cars assigned to the Continental Ltd., Inter-City Ltd., pool trains, Nos. 45-46, the Northland, Nos. 193-194, Nos. 211- 212, and other trains. (This writer recalls riding in the bedroom of an "E" sleeper on the Super Continental from Vancouver to Jasper to Winnipeg in 1972.) Unauthorized duplication or distribution is strictly prohibited. Introduction The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has always been a symbol of Canada's nation-building experience. Poets, musicians, politicians, historians, and writers have lauded the railway as one of the country's greatest achievements. Indeed, the transcontinental railway was a remarkable accomplishment: its managers, engineers, and workers overcame incredible obstacles to throw the iron track across seemingly impenetrable bogs and forests, expansive prairies, and nearly impassable mountains. The cost in money, human energy, and lives was enormous. Completed in 1885, the CPR was one of the most important instruments by which fledgling Canada realized a vision implicit in the Confederation agreement of 1867-the building of a nation from sea to sea. In the fulfilment of this dream, the CPR, and subsequently the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk systems, allowed the easy interchange of people, ideas, and goods across a vast continent; they permitted the settlement of the Western interior and the Pacific coast; and they facilitated the integration of Atlantic Canada with the nation's heartland. In sum, by expediting commercial, political, and cultural intercourse among Canada's diverse regions, the transcontinentals in general, and the CPR in particular, strengthened the nation. Historiography The first scholarly historical analysis of the Canadian Pacific Railway was Harold Innis's A History of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In his daunting account of contracts, passenger traffic, freight rates, and profits, he drew some sweeping conclusions.

Modern day executive committees and their near equivalents can trace their roots back to a political institution – the Board of Control at the beginning of the last century and to the then lingering effects of the American Reform Movement on the politics and administration of local governments. The Reform Movement emphasized efficiency in local government by promoting non-partisanship, at large elections and especially administrative professionalism, which in turn meant a large reliance on professional expertise in the provision of services. This strengthening of the municipal bureaucracy raised the questions of political control and accountability. Council members felt inadequate in developing policy in the face of the expertise of the administrators. To counterbalance the latter, the reformers proposed the creation of a political body – the Board of Control. It was meant to be a political collective mechanism and had specific legislative and executive functions.

Animal tracks in the snow made a dotted line beside the water. But where, I wondered, were the bighorn sheep? The black bears? I pressed my nose to the glass and followed the tracks carefully, expecting — any second now — to see wildlife. I was in my 40th hour aboard Amtrak, nearly 2,000 miles into a 3,218-mile cross-country adventure. I’d packed five books, my laptop, several movies and hours of music, figuring that I’d have plenty of time to kill. But I hadn’t unpacked any of it. Instead, I was so enthralled by the landscape that I’d forgotten I was supposed to be bored. And at this moment, I was convinced that if I focused with all my might, I would spot an animal. Just then, the cafe car attendant yelled up from down below: “Other side!” As he sprinted up the stairs, a couple of us hurled ourselves to the right side of the car. “Did you see the elk?” he asked breathlessly. By that point, the elk were far behind us. I returned to my seat and resolved to enjoy the view, with or without giant creature sightings. But before long, the animal prints had lured my gaze back to the snow deep in the canyon, on the bank of the river. This wasn’t my first time in the middle of the Rockies.

This series of twelve hot chocolate mugs depicts the develop - ment of the steam locomotive in Canada from the 0-6-0 "Samson", to the CPR 2-10-4 #8000. The mugs are being offered by the Quaker Oats Company of Cana­ da to salute Canada's Centennial, and the part played by the rail­ ways and their steam locomotives in furthering the pro ~ ress of the nation. Each cup pictures an authentic locomotive design -- one shows a Canadian Northern 2-8-0, a type of locomotive that made a major contribution to the country's prairie economy by moving grain from the Western provinces to the Lakehead -- another shows one of the Canadian Pacific's ubiquitous D-10 engines. There are 12 different locomotives in the series - each a col­ lector's item. The reproductions are precisely etched in decora­ tive colours and trimmed with 22k gold.
