Thus, in the perception of literary historians, it is often reduced to a marginal phenomenon, that draws its force solely from its powers of receptivity and imitation. Yet, as Philip Sidney writes in his Apology for Poetry, imitation can be transformed into creative appropriation: ‘the diligent imitators of Tully and Demosthenes (most worthy to be imitated) did not so much keep Nizolian paper-books of their figures and phrases, as by attentive translation (as it were) devour them whole, and made them wholly theirs’. The often lamented marginal position of Scottish early modern literature was also the key to its insatiable exploration of continental models and its development of forms that had long exhausted their vitality in Italy or France. -

Jack Which Vernacular Revival? Burns and the Makars When I was introduced to Bums at university, he was properly described as the senior member of a poetic trinity. With Ramsay and Fergusson, we were told, he initiated something called "The Vernacular Revival." That is, in the eighteenth century these poets revived poetic use of Scots ("THE vernacular") after a seventeenth century of treacherous anglicization caused by James VI and the Union of the Crowns. Sadly, as over a hundred years had elapsed, this worthy rescue effort might resuscitate but could never restore the national lan guage to the versatility in fullness of Middle Scots. This pattern and these words-national language, treachery, etc.-still dominate Scottish literary history. They are based on modem assumptions about language use within the United Kingdom. To see Bums's revival of the Scots vernacular in primarily political terms conveniently makes him anticipate the linguistic position of that self-confessed twentieth-century Anglophobe, C. -

Předložená bakalářská práce prezentuje koncepci a charakteristiku angličtiny jako lingua franca na nové World Wide Web, jmenovitě výběr lexika a strukturu vět často používaných na Web 2.0. Teoretická část zkoumá tři koncepty dikce, syntaxe a Webu 2.0; tyto koncepty jsou studovány z pohledu pozadí a vzájemných vztahů. Analytická část rozebírá několik významných webových stránek/aplikací z pohledu dikce a syntaxe. Výsledky analýzy jsou porovnány a v závěru jsou uvedeny společné rysy těchto stránek. Klíčová slova: dikce, syntax, Web 2.0, internet, webova stranky, Anglisticky stylistika. ABSTRACT English abstract As the Internet’s role in our lifestyle increases, massive amount of information is being generated, exchanged and processed every day. This paper tries to conceptualize the characteristics of English language as a lingua franca of the “new” World Wide Web, especially the choice of words and the sentence structures frequently used in the “Web 2.0”. The theoretical part explores the three concepts of diction, syntax and Web 2.0, and each concept’s background and interrelations are studied. In the analysis section, few major websites/applications are analyzed of their diction and syntax. Consequently, the analysis results are compared, and finally the common features will be found for conclusion. Keywords: diction, syntax, web 2.0, web applications, English stylistics. Lydgate in his TPoy Book ( c .1420 MED) and py Oswald Gabelkhover in The Boock of Physieke (1599 OED), but it was used as an attribute to a tlrlng "lycoure" and "water11 respectively. Dunbar, on the other , hand, used it not only to denote the brilliancy or splendid- . ness of literary skill in poetry but was completely aware of the importance of it as his poem in which he invokes Homer and ~~ Cicero to help his pen shows: ~ I Discrive I wald, bot quho coud wele endyte ~ . I Noucht ·thou, Orner, ·als fair as thou coud wryte, ·For· ail ·.thine ornate stilis so perfyte; Nor yit thou, Tullius, quhois lippis suete Off rethorike did in to termes flete: Your aureate tongis both bene all to lyte, For to compile that paradise complete. The Go ldyn Ta:Pge 11. 64-72 Important though it was for Dunbar in the early fif teenth century, •.the concept! of aureation is difficult to define. There were many ways to express the lexical ornamentation of that age. Vere L. Rubel gives twelve different modifiers equivalent to 11 aureate" language: ornate,· laureate, high and curious, silver, garnished, pullysh~d, artamalit~ embellished, fructuous, facundyous, sugurit and mellifluate.~ William Geddie complains that the phrase "ornate style," 11 flood of "' eloquence" and the like are applied·quite indiscriminately. -

Although the Reformation hinged on the most fundamental question of literary study—how to interpret texts— most literary scholars encounter these Biblical hermeneutics only indirectly, reduced to doctrinal bullet points. Such a distillation misrepresents as stable product an unstable process fraught with violence, in which the stakes of interpretation were torture, execution, and damnation. Through close analysis of Catholic Thomas More’s and Protestant William Tyndale’s theological polemics, my first chapter shows that the very hermeneutic distinctions often reified by current scholarship—that Catholics embraced myriad allegorical senses, whereas Protestants insisted on a solitary literal sense—were actually in perpetual collapse. Although More’s and Tyndale’s interpretive theories are wildly different, their interpretive practices become nearly indistinguishable. -

Walter Scheps Middle Scots Bibliography: Problems and Perspectives It is axiomatic that criticism changes literature; it should be equally axiomatic that bibliography changes criticism. Questions of scope, evalua tion vs. description, and the like must be addressed by every bibliographer regardless of subject. Middle Scots bibliography presents all of the problems common to bibliography generally, but, in addition, it contains several which are uniquely its own, the result of cultural and historica1 factors of long duration. Finally, innovations in technology, word processing in particular, have changed the ways in which bibliographies are compiled and produced, and may ultimately change the ways in which they are conceived as well. It is with these issues that this paper is concerned. The ftrst question confronting any bibliographer is the scope of his study. The second is whether his bibliography is to be descriptive or eval uative. These issues seem to be straight-forward enough, but, here as else where, appearances are deceptive. -

Hudson Historical Literature of Early Scotland As the birds gather at their feast in Sir Richard Holland I s The Buke of the Howlat, they are joined by the Rook, representing a Gaelic bard, who ir ritates the company with his monologue of genealogies, lists of kings and constant demands for food.! Finally he is driven away by popular demand, but not before "making many lies." The student of early Scottish history can sympathize with the Rook's audience as the records of Gaelic Scotland occa sionally resemble productions from the Tower of Babel. Otherwise sober historical documents are embellished with myths, legends and literary allu sions. They suggest a flourishing tradition of historical and pseudo-historical writing in early Scotland that would continue to, and fmd expression in, the historical writings of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Yet there has been little effort to identify extant pieces of the earlier Scottish secular literature and less consideration of the influence of those writings on later medieval, or even Renaissance, Scottish literature. -

Guide to the Robert Burns holdings in the Rosenbach Museum & Library 20 January 2021 HISTORICAL NOTE Robert Burns (1759-1796) is a national symbol for Scots, the greatest in a long line of poets who wrote in the Lowland Scots dialect. The son of a tenant farmer, he had little formal education; but he read widely, and drew largely on the folk tales and tunes of his native land. He began his life as a poet while working a farm with his brother, Gilbert, from 1784 to 1788. During this period he wrote some of his best poetry, but managed to scrape only the barest living. In 1786, trying to raise money for passage to Jamaica where a job awaited him, he published the Kilmarnock edition of his early poems. It made him famous, though not rich, and he continued to combine careers as farmer and poet. In 1789 he supplemented his income by obtaining an appointment in the excise, finally giving up his farm in 1791. SCOPE & CONTENT The Rosenbach holds the manuscripts of more than 50 poems, including such important ones as “For a’ that and a’ that”, “Bannockburn”, “Tam O’Shanter”, and “The Rights of Woman”; as well as approximately 50 letters to such close friends as Frances Dunlop, Agnes M’Lehose (Clarinda), and Maria Riddell; and several letters by Burns’s family and friends, including Gilbert Burns, William Riddell, and Helen Maria Williams. Our holdings also include more than 40 books by Burns, mostly early editions, including a copy of the first edition of his Poems that belonged to his patron Frances Dunlop, with copies of additional poems and letters in her hand bound in. -

Jacob Burckhardt’s notorious formulation of ‘The Development of the Individual’ and birth of subjectivity in trecento Italy, spreading north during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, has been largely discredited as a paradigm for describing historical and cultural change.1 Yet the fact remains that in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Western Europe people started writing in different ways about themselves. Humanism, increased literacy, and confessional reform are among the factors usually cited as contributing to the appearance in the later sixteenth century of such recognisably autobiographical works as The Autobiography (1558-63) of Benvenuto Cellini and Michel de Montaigne’s Essays (publ. 1580, 1588, and 1595).
