Long Synopsis: Neil McCormick (Ben Barnes) always knew he’d be famous. A young Irish songwriter and budding genius, nothing less than a life of rock n’ roll stardom will do. But there’s only room for one singer in school band The Hype and his friend Paul’s already bagged the job. So Neil forms his own band with his brother Ivan (Robert Sheehan), determined to leave The Hype in his wake. There’s only one problem: The Hype have changed their name. To ‘U2’. And Paul (Martin McCann) has turned into ‘Bono’. Naturally there’s only one option for Neil: become bigger than U2. The brothers head to London in their quest for fame, but they are blighted by the injustices of the music industry, and their every action is dwarfed by the soaring success of their old school rivals. Then, just as they land some success of their own, Ivan discovers the shocking truth behind Neil’s rivalry with U2, and it threatens to destroy everything. As his rock n’ roll dream crashes and burns, Neil feels like his failure is directly linked to Bono’s success.

  • The Phenomenological Aesthetics of the French Action Film
Les Sensations fortes: The phenomenological aesthetics of the French action film DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Matthew Alexander Roesch Graduate Program in French and Italian The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Flinn, Advisor Patrick Bray Dana Renga Copyrighted by Matthew Alexander Roesch 2017 Abstract This dissertation treats les sensations fortes, or “thrills”, that can be accessed through the experience of viewing a French action film. Throughout the last few decades, French cinema has produced an increasing number of “genre” films, a trend that is remarked by the appearance of more generic variety and the increased labeling of these films – as generic variety – in France. Regardless of the critical or even public support for these projects, these films engage in a spectatorial experience that is unique to the action genre. But how do these films accomplish their experiential phenomenology? Starting with the appearance of Luc Besson in the 1980s, and following with the increased hybrid mixing of the genre with other popular genres, as well as the recurrence of sequels in the 2000s and 2010s, action films portray a growing emphasis on the importance of the film experience and its relation to everyday life. Rather than being direct copies of Hollywood or Hong Kong action cinema, French films are uniquely sensational based on their spectacular visuals, their narrative tendencies, and their presentation of the corporeal form. Relying on a phenomenological examination of the action film filtered through the philosophical texts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Paul Ricoeur, Mikel Dufrenne, and Jean- Luc Marion, in this dissertation I show that French action cinema is pre-eminently concerned with the thrill that comes from the experience, and less concerned with a ii political or ideological commentary on the state of French culture or cinema.

  • FM 271 the Films of Wim Wenders
FM 271 The Films of Wim Wenders Seminar Leader: Matthias Hurst Email: [email protected] Office Hours (P 98, Room 003): Tuesday, 13.30 – 15.00, or by appointment Course Times: Friday, 14.00 – 17.15; Wednesday, 19.30 – 22.00 (weekly film screening) Course Description Wim Wenders is one of Germany’s best known and most prolific filmmakers. He was a major representative of New German Cinema and the so-called Autorenfilm in the 1970s and 1980s, and an important artistic voice for the post-war generation. In addition, he became a celebrated figure in international cinema, making films in locations all over the world, and contributing to the genre of documentary as well as the development of the feature film. As film historians have noted, Wenders is notoriously difficult to classify in terms of cultural traditions or cinematic movements; thus exploring Wenders’s development as filmmaker implies looking at different aesthetic and narrative approaches to cinema, from auteur cinema to modern and postmodern film. His two most famous works Paris, Texas (1984), set in the desolate American West, and Wings of Desire (1987), a gripping portrait of the divided city of Berlin, encapsulate his wide-ranging scope and experimental power. We will consider these two works within Wim Wenders’s career, which includes Alice in the Cities (1974), Kings of the Road (1976), The American Friend (1977), The End of Violence (1997), Buena Vista Social Club (1999), The Million Dollar Hotel (2000), Land of Plenty (2004), Don’t Come Knocking (2005), Every Thing Will Be Fine (2015), Submergence (2017).
