View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by MURAL - Maynooth University Research Archive Library The Wild Irish Girl and the "dalai lama of little Thibet": 1 the long encounter between Ireland and Asian Buddhism Laurence Cox and Maria Griffin Introduction Ireland lies on the margins of the Buddhist world, far from its homeland in northern India and Nepal and the traditionally Buddhist parts of Asia. It is also in various ways "peripheral" to core capitalist societies, and Irish encounters with Buddhism are structured by both facts. Buddhism, for its part, has been a central feature of major Eurasian societies for over two millennia. During this period, Irish people and Asian Buddhists have repeatedly encountered or heard about each other, in ways structured by many different kinds of global relations – from the Roman Empire and the medieval church via capitalist exploration, imperial expansion and finally contemporary capitalism. These different relationships have conditioned different kinds of encounters and outcomes. At the same time, as succeeding tides of empire, trade and knowledge have crossed Eurasia, each tide has left its traces. In 1859, Fermanagh-born James Tennent's best-selling History of Ceylon could devote four chapters to what was already known about the island in ancient and medieval times – by Greeks and Romans, by "Moors, Genoese and Venetians", by Indian, Arabic and Persian authors and in China. Similarly, the Catholic missionary D Nugent, speaking in Dublin's Mansion House in 1924, could discuss encounters with China from 1291 via the Jesuits to the present. -

Oktober 1933 verließ das Deutsche Reich die Genfer Abrü- stungskonferenz, und Joseph Goebbels erklärte den Austritt seines Landes aus dem Völkerbund. Die Katastrophe, die danach über Eu- Aropa hereinbrach, ist bekannt. Am selben Tag setzte ein anderer Deutscher im Norden Indiens gleichfalls ein Zeichen. Ernst Lothar Hoffmann, der in- zwischen Anagarika Govinda hieß, gab an diesem 14. Oktober 1933 in Dar- jeeling die Gründung des Ārya Maitreya Maṇḍala bekannt. Anders als beim Geschrei des Joseph Goebbels nahm die Weltpresse von diesem Ereignis keine Notiz. Eher still trat ein Impuls auf, der den polari- sierenden Ideologien des Zeitgeistes zuwiderlief: Govinda rief einen Orden ins Leben, der Menschen ungeachtet von Geschlecht, ethnischen, nationa- len, kulturellen und religiösen Hintergründen um ein Ideal zusammenführ- te, das bildhaft der Buddha Maitreya verkörpert, dessen Name der Liebende bedeutet. Was für die breite Öffentlichkeit im Lärm der Epoche unterging, würdigten in Indien herausragende Persönlichkeiten. Rabindranath Tagore drückte sei- ne Freude über das Auftreten des Ārya Maitreya Maṇḍala aus. In this handbook we give you material to study for each area we’ll be studying on the retreat. We will also have some talks on the retreat itself where the team will bring out their own personal reflections on the topics covered. As well as the study material in this handbook, it would be helpful if you could read Sangharakshita’s book ‘The History of My Going for Refuge’. You can buy this from Windhorse Publications. There is also some optional extra study material at the beginning of each section. Some of the optional material is in the form of talks that can be downloaded from the Free Buddhist Audio website at www.freebuddhistaudio.com. These aren’t by any means exhaustive - Free Buddhist Audio is growing and changing all the time so you may find other material equally relevant! For example, at the time of writing, Vessantara has just completed a series of talks called ‘Aspects of Going for Refuge’ (2016) at Cambridge Buddhist Centre. -

Buddhism and Human Flourishing Day Workshop REPORT June 25th 2013 The workshop was the second event in the Philosophy and Religious Practices Programme and attracted approximately 50 participants from a wide range of backgrounds. Several participants were professionals in the healthcare sector, some were service users, some were practicing Buddhists or people interested in Buddhism. Most of the speakers were working at the interface of Buddhism and suffering, either on an individual, or community/global level; engaging Buddhist ideas about the individual, embodiment, sentience, the Other, mind, relationality, Compassion and so on, with real human, environmental and global problems. The unique mix of professional, practicing and reflective motivations made for a rewarding day of dialogue and debate. Inevitably, amongst themes which emerged was the exponential growth of the take-up of Buddhist practices into mainstream health-care. Philosophical questions around the legitimacy of dislocating practices from world-view were raised, and the contributions that Mindfulness, Third Wave and Other–centred therapies are making not only to psychotherapy, but to addictions treatment, pain management, and palliative care were explored. Also up for discussion was the immense and many- faceted movement of Engaged Buddhism. This relates Buddhist practices and epistemology with social justice, politics, economics, environmental concerns, and considers the conditions of flourishing on a global scale. Over the day, a conversation emerged between philosophers and Buddhism as it is lived and practised in some of these western and non-western contexts. We discussed whether there might be Buddhist responses to Slavoj Zizek’s accusation that western Buddhism shores up capitalism by presenting itself as a remedy to the stress caused by it. -

Please note that a deposit of £50, 2016 necessary to secure a booking, is non-refundable. Access Vajrasana is fully accessible for those with physical disabilities. Travel We provide a return coach from the LBC to many of our retreats, which you can book and pay for when you book the retreat. The nearest train station to Vajrasana is Stowmarket in Suffolk, which is served by regular trains from London Liverpool Street. Food All the food on our retreats is vegetarian and mostly vegan. Let us know if you have dietary requirements of a medical kind. Solitary Retreats We have two solitary huts – Ryokan and Han Shan – which cost £210 (full) or £180 (concession) per week, running Friday to Friday. Vajrasana means ‘Diamond Throne’ and marks the spot where the Buddha gained Enlightenment The Buddha took grass from a grass cutter, and, taking himself to the foot of the great tree, he made a vow for enlightenment and seated himself. He took up the supreme, immovable cross-legged posture, saying, “I will not rise from this position on the ground till I achieve the completion of my task”. As he seated himself the gods felt unequalled joy, and the birds and the companies of wild beasts refrained from noise, nor did the forest trees, when struck by the wind, rustle at all.
