Thornton The law firm representing Ahmed Zayat in his $19-million AT SARATOGA IS NOT OK bankruptcy pleading asked a federal judge Monday for permission to walk away from the case based on Zayat's alleged non-payment of $368,273 to the firm in outstanding legal fees. "The representation of the Debtor has consumed an extremely significant amount of the available resources of our firm," wrote attorney Jay Lubetkin of Rabinowitz, Lubetkin & Tully, LLC, in a July 26 "motion to withdraw" filed in United States Bankruptcy Court (District of New Jersey). "The Debtor has been consistently advised that absent satisfactory arrangements for the payment of the outstanding fees and expenses due to our firm and newly incurred billings, the firm would have no alternative but to seek to withdraw from representation of the Debtor," Lubetkin wrote. Then again, should anyone have been surprised? This was just the latest example of this being a sport that is so dysfunctional, its regulatory systems so weak, that it is completely unable to police itself. Help is on its way. Some day, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) will be implemented and a central body led by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) will begin the process of herding the cats to replace the current system with one that actually works. In the meantime, Marcus Vitali, despite dozens upon dozens of violations, is free to compete at the most important, most high-profile meet in the sport. That's an embarrassment. In a story last week in the TDN covering Vitali's appearance at Saratoga, T.D. Thornton put together what amounts to a rap sheet detailing all of Vitali's offenses. Where to start? There are 84 docket entries under his name in The Jockey Club's online rulings database, many of them for medication violations. Between 2011 and the start of 2016, Vitali was hit with 23 medication violations in Florida alone. The tracks are adding an additional 10% for Cal-bred winners of allowance races making the bonus 30%. A qualifying race is all non-claiming races excluding stakes with a purse of at least $15,000, as are open non maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California. After these deductions, 75% of the remainder to be paid as breeder awards, and 25% of the fund to be paid as stallion awards.

Psychology A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2015 School of Veterinary Science Abstract A uniform method capable of measuring animal welfare within the Thoroughbred Racing Industry (TBRI) does not exist. The aims of this study were to first investigate the importance of different welfare issues for Thoroughbred Racehorses (TBR) in Australia and then to incorporate them into a TBR welfare index (TRWI) that could be utilised in the industry. The second aim was assisted by the first, which utilised the expert opinion of stakeholders with in the TRWI, highlighting those aspects of husbandry requiring most improvement, and validated with behavioural measures. National and State Associations linked to racing were invited to send two delegates (experts) to a stakeholder meeting to determine key welfare issues, which they considered may have negative equine welfare implications. Following this a survey was created which posed vignettes of different combinations of welfare issues, which was subsequently presented to stakeholders around Australia. Fourteen key welfare issues were identified, each with two to four levels that were related to common husbandry practices. The 224 respondents identified the following welfare issues in declining order of importance: horsemanship > health and disease > education of the horse > track design and surface > ventilation > stabling > weaning > transport > nutrition > wastage > heat and humidity > whips > environment > gear. Further analysis of data tested the statistical significance of demographic factors, which determined that the respondents were relatively uniform in their answers. The TRWI which emerged from the responses could potentially be used to identify and improve welfare in training establishments.

Golden Horn, Gleneagles Slated to Finally Meet in Irish Champion The much anticipated matchup between star European miler GLENEAGLES (IRE) and fellow standout GOLDEN HORN (GB) appears set to finally take place Saturday in Leopardstown’s $1.33 million “Win and You’re In” QIPCO Irish Champion (GI), with an eight-horse field in place, and a berth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf going to the winner. The Irish Champion is one of three Challenge races at Leopardstown and highlights a weekend that features 10 total “Win and You’re In” races, including the prestigious Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI) Sunday. A rainy forecast for Friday has caused Leopardstown officials to move the Irish Champion to the outside course, and to start Saturday’s race about one hour earlier in the program.
