HS April12.Pdf To My Fellow Hobbyists, Welcome to our 2nd auction of 2012. We want to thank former Detroit Tiger legend Don Wert for some awe- some items from his personal collection. We are currently working on our June and August auctions with the latter being the one where a vast majority of the items will be on display and open for bidding at the National Convention in Baltimore this summer. Please contact our office to discuss the inclusion of your items in this once-a-year Hobby Extravaganza that will give your items tremendous exposure. We still have plenty of time to work with you on this and look forward to hearing from many of you. Once again our dedicated team has outdone itself, assembling this fantastic group of 884 rare, unusual, and even one-of-a-kind items. Dave Stoddard has added even more new features to keep our site simple and user- friendly while incorporating new and useful ideas. James Feagin, Mark Raines, Ricky Huggins and our newest addition, Steve Chiaravallotti, have carefully described all the items. Ricky has begun to fit in nicely, handling the multitude of tasks we have given him. We also need to thank Ryan Raymond (Ricky's roommate from col- lege), who has joined our staff. Matt Flores has captured the images. Randy Curtis has done a fantastic job working with our consignors to create some unique and interesting lots. Jamey Austin has swept the catalog for #@%#”s, while Josh Wulkan has given Mike and Sally Henry the “canvas and paint” they need to create anoth- er masterpiece. Kris Fraley did another amazing job sending out all the lots in a safe and timely manner, while Barry Malkin’s eagle eyes have once again spotted some high-grade gems!! Our constantly growing nationwide staff of consignor reps (now at 31 strong), led by the tireless Steve Dickler, has gathered together another fine assortment of “goodies.” Should you have items or an entire collection you are thinking about selling, a full list of our well-qualified and ready reps (along with their contact info) is avail- able in this catalog. The righthander received 25 of the 26 first place votes, with the other vote going to first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Verlander led the American League with 24 wins, a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts in 2011 to become just the second pitcher in franchise history to lead all three categories in a single season, joining Hal Newhouser, who accomplished the feat in 1945. He became the first American League pitcher to win the triple crown since Minnesota’s Johan Santana did so in 2006. In addition to leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts, Verlander also topped all league pitchers with an .828 winning percentage, 251.0 innings pitched, a .192 batting average against, 6.24 hits per nine innings and 8.39 baserunners per nine innings. Additional season superlatives included a 16-3 record following a Tigers loss. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked the most wins by a pitcher following a team loss since Steve Carlton posted 19 such wins for the Philadelphia Phillies during the 1972 season. With 250 strikeouts, Verlander has now recorded 200-or-more strikeouts in three straight seasons, marking the longest streak by a Tigers pitcher since Mickey Lolich did so in six straight seasons from 1969-74.

Helen Keller (1880-1968), born both deaf and blind, uttered these words with a hint of heaven in them. In 1937, she visited Japan and inquired about adopting a dog to be a life companion. She reflected, "If ever there was an angel in fur, it was Kamikaze. I know I shall never feel quite the same tenderness for any other pet. The Akita dog has all the qualities that appeal to me - he is gentle, companionable and trusty." Singer Andrea Bocelli, in the same spiritual vein, reflected: "Losing my sight had nothing to do with my focus on music. My passion for music was already there, so it would be a mistake to give too much significance to my blindness... My blindness doesn't define my life." On December 19, another famous blind person performed a concert at the "B.B. King" on 42nd Street that evoked sight within the blindness. Jose Feliciano was born on September 10, 1945 in Lares, Puerto Rico. He is famous for songs such as "Feliz Navidad" from 1970, as well as "Light My Fire"(first popularized by the Doors in 1968) and the theme song from the television show "Chico and the Man" with Jack Albertson and Freddie Prinze. I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.
