(Number 83 – Fall 2012)

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As the end of 2012 approaches and the Association begins its’ second quarter of a century of existence, we are thankful to our members for another successful year. Our Association continues to thrive because of the hard work of many members.

Our most recent event was the annual reunion in City in September. Many thanks to the organizers: Anne-Sophie Racine and her parents, Denis and Jeanne Racine, and Pierre Racine and his wife, Celine. Many of us will remember our 25th anniversary reunion with very fond memories. Our visit to the ancestral home was a highlight of the weekend. We had a wonderful banquet on Saturday evening which reunited five past presidents of our Association.

The mass at Saint-Anne de Beaupré Basilica was made special with the participation of several of our members. Again, we are grateful to everyone who contributes their time and talent to make our Association and our activities special in so many different ways.

The annual Association meeting was held during the reunion weekend. A long-time member of the council, Gustave Racine, did not seek re-election. We thank Gustave for his many years of devoted service as president and more recently as secretary. Best wishes to you, Gustave and to your devoted wife, Céline. Congratulations to the following members who were re-elected: Jean-Louis Racine, François Racine, Diane Racine-Dupuis, Monique Chevrefils and to new member, Jean-Paul Leblanc. Council member Gilles DuPont is our new secretary. Thank you, Gilles, for agreeing to take on this task. We also enjoyed and welcomed several new participants and look forward to their continuing support.

Please mark your calendar for next year’s reunion to be held in St. Donat on 21-22 September 2013. Diane Racine-Dupuis and her husband, Claude, have generously agreed to be the organizers. Stay tuned for more information on the evolving details.

As always, we invite you to submit Racine family news to Denis Racine, the editor of our Newsletter. Also, remember to keep your membership up to date by sending your dues to Jacques Racine, who also welcomes your genealogical information. (The addresses are in the newsletter.)

Céline Racine-Paquette.

OUR 25TH REUNION…. A GREAT SUCCESS

Under sunny autumn skies, some 90 members and friends of the Association attended our 25th annual reunion in Sainte-Anne de Beaupré on 15-16 September 2012.

Members of the administrative council met with the mayor, Mr. Jean- Luc Fortin, at a cocktail party at Sainte-Anne de Beaupré City Hall on the afternoon of Friday 14 September. The council also held a meeting on Saturday morning.

There were five activities for attendees over the weekend.

TOUR

Denis Racine was our tour guide on Saturday afternoon. The theme of the tour was to visit places and landscapes of part of the old seigneurie of Beaupré. The original eight owners had been granted the seigneurie in 1636 by the “Compagnie des Cent-Associés” (Company of One Hundred Associates). Monsignor de Laval, the first bishop of Québec (1662-1668) purchased the seigneurie from the original owners and subsequently gave it to the Seminary of Québec, who remained as the owners until the abolition of the seigniorial system in 1854. The seigneurie was 15 leagues (45 km or 30 miles) wide along the St Lawrence River between the Montmorency and Gouffre River at Baie St-Paul, and 6 leagues deep. This vast territory today is the site of 10 municipalities.

The tour began with a visit to the house of Étienne Racine, at 950 Royal Street in Sainte-Anne. The house is currently owned by Mr. Jacques Blais and his wife, who were gracious enough to allow us to visit the house, a rare treat indeed. The house was built in approximately 1780 on the foundations of an earlier house which had most likely been destroyed by the English in 1759. The house had had an addition built in approximately 1820. The house is located on the land originally granted to our ancestor Étienne Racine in 1650 by Seigneur Olivier le Tardif as a reward for the help Étienne had given him in the recruitment of settlers in France during the winter of 1647-1648. The house stayed in the family until 1809, when it passed over to the Paré family as part of the marriage of Félicité Racine to Augustin Paré. It stayed in Paré hands until 1920. The Government of Québec designated the house a heritage building on 10 June 1975. There was a major fire in the house on 28 April 1980, which destroyed the interior after which it was rebuilt. Across the road from the house, there is an old root cellar built in approximately 1820.

We then proceeded to St-Joachim Church, which was built during the period 1771-1779. A sacristy was added to the front of the building in 1805. The tabernacle and chandeliers were built by François Baillargé in 1785. François and Thomas Baillargé decorated and painted the gilt on the statues of the four evangelists during the period 1816-1829. Louis-Thomas Berlinguet decorated the pulpit and the work bench in 1837. Two of the paintings are by Antoine Plamondon (1869) and two other paintings are by Brother Luc (1671). The building was designated a heritage building in 1959 and restored in 1965. The presbytery was built in 1766 and expanded in 1828. In the adjacent cemetery lie Éphrem Racine (1845-1902) and Rosalie Thomassin, who had twenty children and left an important legacy in the area, including Ministers (Stéphane Bédard), or wives of Ministers (Marc-André Bédard, Marie Malavoy), mayors (Arthur Racine, Simon Racine, Paul Racine, Gaston Gagnon, Denis Racine), singers (Tristan Malavoy, Julie Cimon-Racine), and one Olympic athlete (Liza Racine). The group then left on foot to visit la Blondelle, a house built in 1730 and rebuilt in 1779; this house had been the home of Éphrem and his family, who had been given the house by his aunt in 1894. The house stayed in Éphrem’s family until 1934. Two other Racine families settled in St-Joachim. Pierre Racine, son of Noël, bought a farm from Mg. de Laval in 1697. In 1808, Jean Racine, son of René Racine and uncle of the previously mentioned Éphrem, was given land by his aunt and the property stayed in the hands of his descendants until 1940.

The tour continued to the Grande Ferme du Séminaire de Québec (Large Farm of the Seminary of Québec), which had served as a school for the arts and trades from 1676. Near this farm are the remains of the old St-Joachim Church, built during the period 1685-1686 to replace a former chapel built in 1633, which had been destroyed by the English on 23 August 1759. The parish priest of the time, Philippe-René Robineau of Portneuf, was killed, along with seven other parishioners, by the English. However, another version of the story has the priest escaping to the mountains with the other parishioners, where he looked after the sick and the old, but also where they were ambushed by the English and all were put to death.

The tour then proceeded to visit the Petite Ferme (Small Farm), restored in 1763 and enlarged in 1866. The farm is headquarters for the administrative offices of the Tourmente National Park, where millions of white geese and Canada geese stage on their migration from their Arctic summer feeding grounds in Baffin Island and Greenland and their southern home in Cape Hatteras Virginia and North Carolina. On the return trip, we saw Petit-Cap, site of le Château Bellevue and its chapel, built in 1779 and enlarged in 1870; the Château continues to this day to serve as a retirement home for priests of the Québec diocese. It is here that General de Gaulle was taken to lunch in 1967 after mass at the Sainte-Anne Basilica.

ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The Annual General Assembly was held at 6:00 pm (the report is elsewhere in this newsletter).

BANQUET

During the banquet, Anne-Sophie showed a PowerPoint presentation of photos covering the 25 year history of our Association. Our President Céline presented plaques of appreciation to the former (Denis, Jean-Marie, Gustave, Jean-Louis and Jacques H.). She also announced that our next reunion would be held at Saint-Donat, which is in the Laurentides; Gilles Dupuis and his wife Diane Racine have offered to be the organizers. Denis conducted a “call to the regions”, recognizing participants from the areas of the National Capital, Chaudière-Appalaches, the Mauricie, Montréal, Laval, Montérégie, l’Estrie, the Laurentides, the Outaouais, Ontario and New York state. Denis also recounted the history of our family ancestors on the Beaupré coast, as well as the 25-year history of our Association. During the meal, we were entertained by the beautiful music of accordionist Bernard Simon.

MASS

At 9:30 am on Sunday, we attended a special mass at the magnificent Basilica of Sainte-Anne de Beaupré. Father Guy Desrochers, the parish priest, celebrated the mass. Our treasurer Pierre Racine acted as animator for the mass, Aurèle and Solange Racine served at mass, and Anne-Marie and Jean- Paul gave readings. The choir was directed by Jean-Claude Simard.

BRUNCH

The last activity was a Brunch at the magnificent Manoir Montmorency, located next to the falls of the same name. All attendees expressed their appreciation to the organizers and left on a happy note, looking forward to next year’s reunion in Saint-Donat.

OUR ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Sixty persons attended our Annual General Assembly. Our president, Céline Racine-Paquette, welcomed everyone to the meeting and declared the assembly open. The agenda and the minutes of the previous general assembly were approved.

The President gave a report on our activities over the past year. Our Treasurer, Pierre Racine, then presented the financial statements, which were subsequently accepted by the assembly.

Jacques H Racine, President of the organizing committee for our 24th annual reunion held in Ottawa in September 2011, then gave a report of the reunion. He thanked all those who had participated and announced that the reunion had produced a profit of some $250.

The mandates on the administrative council of the following persons had expired: Jean-Louis, Gustave and François Racine and Mrs. Diane Racine-Dupuis and Mrs. Monique Chèvrefils. Mr. Gustave Racine announced that he did not wish to be considered for another term. Jean-Louis, François Racine, Diane Racine-Dupuis and Monique Chèvrefils were re-elected. As well, a new appointment to council, in the name of Mr. Jean-Paul Leblanc of Ottawa, was chosen to replace Gustave.

The meeting was then adjourned while the new council met separately to elect the officers. Denis Racine, President of the Elections, then announced the following slate of officers for 2012-2013:

- President: Céline Racine-Paquette; - First Vice-President: Jean-Louis Racine; - Second Vice-President: Diane Racine-Dupuis; - Treasurer: Pierre Racine; - Secretary: Gilles Dupont

The Executive Committee will consist of the President, the First Vice-President, the Treasurer and Mr. Gilles Dupont and Mr. François Racine.

The President thanked the assembly for the confidence and support they had given her. She congratulated the newly elected and gave a warm to Mr. Jean-Paul Leblanc, the new member of council. The President also thanked Gustave Racine for his many years of devoted service to the Association.

The assembly was closed at 7:00 pm.

RACINADES

A VEGETARIAN COOKBOOK

On 12 April 2012, Luc Racine published a 232 page book entitled Végé on vegetarian cuisine. Himself a vegetarian 1975, Luc Racine describes himself as an epicure. We have come to appreciate him for his passion for texture, his innovation, and his blend of flavours, all of which have led to his fame. The book was published by Modus Vivendi and is on sale for $26.95 in bookstores.

A FOURTH RACINE IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

Defenseman Jonathan Racine was drafted in the third round by the Florida Panthers on 25 June 2011. He follows in the NHL footsteps of Yves Racine (Montréal Canadiens), Bruce Racine (Saint Louis Blues) and Jean-François Racine (Toronto Maple Leafs). Jonathan was born in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts on 28 May 1993. He played the 2008-2009 season with the Vickings of Saint-Eustache, and he has played for the Cataractes de Shawinigan, a team in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League, since 2009. On 4 February 2012, he was awarded a five game suspension for a dangerous hit on Jonathan Huberdeau of the Sea Dogs. However, Jonathan Racine remains one of the top prospects of the Florida Panthers

In addition, Marie Malavoy, member for , is the wife of Réal Racine; she was appointed Minister of Education as well as being responsible for the Montérégie region.

NEW MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT LÉO BUREAU-BLOUIN, GRANDSON OF A RACINE

Léo Bureau-Blouin, the president of the Fédération étudiante collégiale du Québec (FECQ,), the Québec federation of college students, was in the forefront of the student protests in the spring of 2012. He is the grandson of Georgette Racine and Bernard Blouin, who were married in 1945 at Saint-Barnabé-Sud. Shortly after his mandate as president expired on 1 June 2012, he announced his intention to run for the Parti Québecois in the riding of Laval-des-Rapides in the upcoming provincial elections of 4 September 2012. He got 14,934 votes to win his seat with an advantage of 2,362 votes over his nearest opponent. In so doing, he became, at age 20, the youngest member of the Québec Parliament since 1867.

Whether or not we approve of the actions of the student federation, we congratulate Mr. Bureau-Blouin for his pluck and perseverance, due in great part, we surmise, to his Racine bloodlines.

CANDIDATE IN 4 SEPTEMBER 2012 PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS

Jordan Racine ran as a candidate for the Option Nationale party in the riding of Comté Lac-Saint-Jean in the Québec provincial elections held on 4 September 2012. THE TUAREG RALLY OF 2012

Marc Racine, born in Combourg (Bretagne, France) on 4 April 1962, is an athlete, in spite of the fact that he has been wheelchair-bound since a motorcycle accident in Burkina Faso in 1984. He was a navigator for driver Richard Crétier in the Tuareg Rally of 2012. Their vehicle is called “the truggy Mecapark Porsche, constructed in Britain with the help of racing specialists from California. The vehicle is a fusion of a Ford Ranger and a Class 1 California dune buggy: it is some 6 feet wide, 14 feet long, and weighs a mere 2800 pounds. Its engine is tough, reliable and efficient. The car is at its best in rough terrain. It is eco-friendly, having photovoltaic cells to store energy during daylight hours and power electrical systems at nighttime, its Porsche engine has the capability of producing hydrogen, thus helping to reduce emissions and improve the engine’s performance. Racine and Crétier solicited donations from the public and created a program of “one stage equals one wheelchair”, whereby they donated a wheelchair to the local hospital, and destined for the local handicapped people, for each of the stages that they completed.

The Tuareg Rally was held from 18 to 26 March 2012. The race started at Almeria in Spain and covered a distance of 5000 mile as far as Erg Chebbi, Morocco, and back to Almeria.

Marc Racine is used to rally racing. He was in the World Cup FIA All-Terrain Rally in Tunisia in 2003, followed by another World Cup rally in Morocco in 2004. In 2008, he place third in the official Team Mercedes-SDO entry at a Mercedes ML450 event in Tunisia.

BOAT MODEL

The Rimouski Maritime Institute recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. As part of the budget for the event, a model of the ship Le Québec was commissioned.

In its day, the ship was a merchantman. It was used to teach seamanship to members of the Institute. The ship was also used to transport rolls of paper from Montréal to Liverpool, England.

Mr. Francis Racine, a biologist, received the commission. Racine is the son and the brother of several of the ship’s past navigators (the late Guy, Mario and Sonia). Mr. Racine put at least 350 hours of work into the project. The 1/100 scale model depicts the ship as it was in 1970. In addition to the model, the project involved the collection of some eighty photos, covering river pilot and former members of the crew. The whole presentation gave a true depiction of the ship and its company over time.

The exposition is still available for viewing at the Rimouski Maritime Institute. Francis Racine has made several other models of ships currently plying the waters of the Saint Lawrence River, among them being the tugboat Laval, the oiler Thalassa Desgagnes, and the oceanic research vessel Coriolis II.

GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH: WHAT’S NEW

Our genealogical research is still ongoing.

During our visit to the département archives of the Calvados, at Caen, in June 2011, we researched the entries of the land registry bailiff of Moyaux and we made several discoveries.

The first discovery was an entry concerning the grand-niece of Étienne Racine, a Charlotte Racine, daughter of Pierre Racine (son of Marguerin Racine) and Catherine Roullier, who married Guillaume Halbout on 24 December 1699 in Marolles, a village approximately 5 kilometres south of Fumichon. Charlotte and Guillaume would have a daughter Marie, who married Gabriel Doublet at Marolles on 5 September 1724. On 9 December 1710, Charlotte and her husband sold a farm located in Fumichon to her uncle Nicolas Racine, a merchant of Fumichon. The land, as described, is adjacent to the land of her father Pierre Racine.

The other discovery, which came as a great surprise to us, was about the marriage of Françoise Racine, eldest daughter of Laurent and Françoise Fivon, to Jean Duval, son of Jean and Catherine Vastine. The marriage had been held in the parish of Le Pin on 12 February 1711 at Moyaux, a commune north of Fumichon. The marriage contract had been signed on the preceding 21st of January. The couple had a daughter Anne, born in 1720, who married Jean Grieu at Le Pin on 10 August 1745. Who was this Laurent Racine? Was he from Fumichon, making him a nephew of our ancestor? An entry on 23 December 1660 concerns Marie and Marguerite Racine, sisters and daughters and inheritors of Christophe Racine. The sisters had married, respectively, lawyers Louis Asse (from L’Hostellerie) and Jacques Lefebvre (from Bernay). The sisters had received 300 livres from Noël Lempereur, Sieur of Vastinnes, of Fumichon, as repayment of a mortgage first undertaken by the father of Noël, Gabriel Lempereur and payable to Christophe Racine. The same question applies here: who was this Christophe Racine? Was he from Fumichon, and if yes, was he related to Étienne Racine?

As we can see, we need to conduct further research. These notarial archives contain riches in information on several aspects of the Racines. However, this is not simple work: the texts are often indecipherable.

In other work on our genealogy, our colleague Jules Racine, who has conducted some deep research into our genealogy, very graciously gave us a list of Racines who had died since January 2012. For this we thank him very much.

And finally, we have updated our genealogical information on the Racines from the Département du Nord (59), the communes of Bonnemain and Trans on the l’Ille-et-Vilaine (35) in France. We will also have to conduct research in the département of Pas-de-Calais (62).
