Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi from the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler factory team had a difficult start and finished without points in Diriyah. Tomorrow, they will have a new chance: the next race on the outskirts of Riyadh starts at 3 PM (CET). With a riveting race marked by plenty of tactics, the new Formula E season kicked off in Diriyah on Friday. For the first time since the series started, the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler factory team with Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi finished without points in the opening race of the season. Due to its strong championship positions last season, the German-Brazilian pairing had to go out on the still very dusty track in the first two qualifying groups and were only able to achieve the fifteenth and nineteenth place on the grid. In the race, di Grassi made up six places to finish thirteenth. Daniel Abt was also fighting back, when he was touched by a rival which damaged his front wing causing him to hit the wall.

Hungaroring. Timo Glock (GER) and Bruno Spengler (CAN) finished second and third in Saturday’s turbulent race at the Hungaroring (HUN) after a strong catch-up race, which saw them claim the third and fourth podiums of the season for BMW Motorsport. Both drivers benefitted from a daring strategy with early pit stops, which paid off after a safety car phase. Marco Wittmann (GER) in ninth also finished in the points. A collision forced Maxime Martin (BEL) and Tom Blomqvist (GBR) to retire. Augusto Farfus (BRA) was in fifth place when he was hit by a rival and the resulting spin saw him drop right down the field. Qualifying: Augusto Farfus in the Shell BMW M4 DTM achieved his best qualifying result of the season and started the race as the best-placed BMW driver in sixth on the grid. His personal fastest lap time was 1:32.275 minutes. Tom Blomqvist in the BMW Driving Experience M4 DTM in tenth place also made it into the top ten. Maxime Martin (SAMSUNG BMW M4 DTM), Timo Glock (DEUTSCHE POST BMW M4 DTM), Marco Wittmann (Red Bull BMW M4 DTM) and Bruno Spengler (BMW Bank M4 DTM) followed in positions 12, 14, 15 and 17. The last time the DTM saw such a close finish was 24 years ago. “The race was pretty entertaining,” said René Rast, who had to fight hard for his first victory of the season – especially against pole sitter Robin Frijns. The two brand mates clashed in the first corner after the start. “I had to drive through the grass in Turn 1, and also afterwards the fight with Robin was pretty hard. We pitted early to react to an undercut of Robin and Marco (Wittmann). I knew that Nico would come in the end on fresher tires. Our strategy was brave, and it got pretty tight, but fortunately it worked for us.” Nico Müller didn’t get a perfect start from second on the grid. “There was more grip than I expected,” said the Swiss. “When René and Robin did some rallycrossing in front of me, I briefly had a clear view.

MEDIA INFORMATION May 2, 2015 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps Audi Sport wins at Spa with Michelin: a double stint-and-a-half on the same tyres! The 2015 6 Hours of Spa (Saturday, May 2) saw victory go to the N°7 Audi R18 e-tron quattro of Fässler/Lotterer/Tréluyer. After monopolising the top three places in Friday’s qualifying, Porsche started the event as favourite. As expected, the three Porsche 919 Hybrids got away to a strong start to lead the 2015 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps early on, chased by the Audi Sport and Toyota Racing prototypes which jostled for position in their wake. This situation looked set to last but it evolved as the teams started to run differing tyre strategies after all the LM P1 factory teams had begun the race on MICHELIN’s ‘soft high temperature’ compound. Toyota Racing was the first team to double stint, on Lap 21, when Alexander Wurz pitted the N°2 Toyota TS 040 Hybrid and re-joined the race 1m4s afterwards with the same tyres on its car’s left wheels. The Austrian was followed into the pits on Lap 22 by Sébastien Buemi in the N°1 sister car which went back out without a change of rubber, saving around 20 seconds in the process to hold its place among the front-runners. The first Audi Sport driver to double stint was Marco Bonanomi in the N°9 Audi R18 e-tron quattro when the car made its second stop on Lap 47.

The Swiss driver’s points haul of 28 points closed the gap to leader Nelson Piquet Jr to just five units ahead of Sunday’s action. That understandably boosted his confidence, and it was lifted further when Buemi benefited from a dry qualifying slot (Q2) for Race 2, whereas title rival Piquet was slowed by a heavy shower during Q3. For the first time this season, the drivers faced wet conditions but the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV rose to the occasion to provide the necessary grip. “We’ve been waiting for this sort of weather since the beginning on the championship,” says Serge Grisin, manager of Michelin’s Formula E programme. “We designed the MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV to be a very versatile tyre and we finally got the opportunity to see how it performed in a wet qualifying session on Sunday. Technically, that was very important because we wanted to collect data and get feedback from all the drivers. Now we know we met our objective because we received positive praise from everyone.” The wet session shook up the start order for Race 2, with Stéphane Sarrazin (Venturi) claiming pole position and title challengers Buemi and Piquet starting from sixth and 16th places on the grid respectively.
