It identifies adverse environmental and social impacts which might be caused by the projects selected for implementation in these settlements and develops, where required, suitable mitigation measures. Environmental measures are described in the present document, while social issues (physical or economic displacement of persons, compensation issues) are dealt with in the RAP, which is a separate document. The ESIA report is based upon the previously submitted and approved reports related to works carried out in Mombasa municipality: Socio-economic report: based on survey works carried out in each of the settlements. Conceptual design report: which includes a preliminary environmental and social screening report as well as a community consultation report. Draft Settlement Upgrading Plan report (Feasibility study): which includes a cost benefit analysis to the choice of variants in which environmental and social parameters are taken into account. Detailed Design report: which is being prepared simultaneously to this ESIA and includes the final design of the infrastructure components. The civil work components taken into account in this ESIA are presented in the following table. Settlement Scope of works 1. Jomvu Kuu 1.1 Construction of 150 m of Slope Stabilization and relevant landscape works 1.2 Construction of Footpath length total 1360 m 1.3 Construction of ablution blocks / Water Kiosk / Rainwater harvesting system linked to the communal hall equipped with storage 3 x. 24m3 – 1 unit block adjacent the Communal Hall 1.4 Construction of ablution blocks / Water Kiosk – 1 unit. block near the madras school which is not yet built 1.5 Provision of new sewer line (200mm UPCV) of length 400m along the eastern and northern settlement boundary to collect existing following sewerage water and connection to a septic tank treatment system 1.6 Provision of 1360 m of new water lines based upon the existing water supply network and following the footpath network 1.7 Water supply connections to 202 settlement plots 1.8 Construction of 1 No. high mast lighting structures 2. Categorization and its Reason 2.1 Categorization: Category B 2.2 Reason: (1) There are two religious facilities encroached to the right-of-way (ROW). A number of street traders in and around the road reserve need to be relocated. However, no involuntary resettlement is foreseen due to the project. Responsible and implementing agencies, Ministry of Roads (MOR) and Kenya Urban Road Authority (KURA), have paid due consideration to the PAPs (Project Affected Persons) such as compensation. (2) Any significant negative impacts are not expected due to the project because there will be no land reclamation, land development and land clearing. The area of Changamwe District is 54.5km2. Changamwe Division is composed of three Locations, namely, Changamwe, Chaani and Port Reitz. (2) Demography According to the 2009 census, the population of Changamwe District was 131,552 and the number of household was 40,984. The female and male population accounted for 47.1% and 52.9% respectively. The population density of Mombasa Municipality was 3,192 persons per square kilometer in 2001.

How does the digital divide in access to communication technologies reproduce or counter pre-existing inequalities? This dissertation is based on 26 months of participant observation in Kenya since 2001, when I investigated the competition and economic precariousness found among art traders, exporters, and art-producing organizations and cooperatives. In this dissertation I focus on the recent effects of cell phones and the internet. To clarify the contemporary importance of mobile communication technologies for Kenyans working in the shadow of the coastal tourism industry, I discuss the history of social inequality in Mombasa, the consolidation of curio art traders and cooperatives in the port city, and Kenya’s political economy of ICT access. Following the removal of the roadside kiosks housing my initial sample of 2001, I investigated the strategies of small- scale art vendors as they struggled to survive economic change.
