Tales of the everyday city: geography and chronology in postcolonial Mombasa Zoë Goodman Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD 2017 Department of Anthropology and Sociology SOAS, University of London Abstract Grounded in ethnographic research conducted amongst Mombasa‘s small and heterogeneous Muslim population with roots in what is today the Indian state of Gujarat, this thesis explores the mobilities, insecurities, notions of Islamic reform and patterns of claims-making that circulate in the city. These themes are examined through the lens of ‗everyday‘ discourse and practice, paying particular attention to the multiplicity of dispositions towards time and space that inform these broader urban processes. The thesis describes Mombasan Muslims struggling with history and with the future. Through Art Deco façades, deep-fried delicacies and discourses of decay, I consider some of the ways individuals historicise their relations to the city, marking status and relations of affinity, as much as arraigning others for the political, economic and religious uncertainties of the present. Unpacking a blood donation drive and a gated community in-the-making, I trace the histories and geographies of piety that colour this Indian Ocean port, and how these are entangled with material aspirations and regional anxieties. The ‗Mombasan urbanism‘ that emerges in these pages is as scopic as it is rooted; it is infused with memory and with futurity. The discourses and practices of the littoral residents we encounter bring us into dialogue with a range of literatures, from the anthropology of architecture to ethnographies of insecurity, as well as studies of memory and mourning. These, and other thematic issues, are considered in tandem with the regional scholarship on Islam in Kenya, Asians in East Africa and Indian Ocean cosmopolitanisms. The research presented here offers possibilities for thinking beyond the racialised social categories that continue to structure stereotype and scholarship in East Africa, and expands the literature on ‗being‘ Muslim in Mombasa. Through the geographies and chronologies shown to constitute the Mombasan everyday, this thesis evinces the city as always in the making. 3 Acknowledgments First and foremost I would like to thank all the people in Mombasa who welcomed me into their homes, cafés and religious spaces with patience, kindness and mouth- watering snacks. Creary This thesis explores the social, political, and symbolic roles of the Mijikenda kayas in the Coast Province of Kenya. The kayas, which exist today as sacred grove forests, are the original homesteads of the Mijikenda and the organizational units from which the symbolic authority and esoteric knowledge of the Mijikenda elders are derived. As a result, I conceptualize kayas as the physical space of the forests, but also complex networks of political, metaphysical, and symbolic power. While the kaya forests and their associated institutions have often been framed as cultural relics, I use this lens to illustrate how the position of the kayas in Mijikenda life has influenced broader social and political developments. Three main themes are developed: the first theme addresses how the kayas were used in different capacities to create space from the encroachment of colonial rule.

A valuable addition to the steadily growing corpus of literature on the ‘minority’ Islamic sects of South Asia, The Shi’a in Modern South Asia is part of a recent trend to move away from the atabat-i- aliyat (the Shi’ite shrine cities of Iraq), the traditional lens employed in much existing scholarship on Shi’i Islam. One effect of this realignment led scholars to focus more closely on the sizeable Shi’i communities of South Asia, resulting in a spurt of literature from the mid-1980s.1 Employing a similar approach, the eight chapters that make up this text contribute to this widening scholarship. Of special mention are two important correctives the volume makes to existing literature: it vests equal space and import to a study of the less numerous Shi’a subdivisions of Isma’ilis and Khojas, and second, it moves beyond devotional rituals and popular religious practices to aspects which allow it to uncover both the internal and international workings of the Shi’i community of South Asia. Sajjad Rizvi’s chapter highlights the contributions the noted Shi’a mujtahid Sayyid Dildar ‘Ali Nasirabadi (1753–1820), made in lending a theological legitimacy to the rulers of Awadh. The ‘new conception of Shi‘i theology’ (p. 33) devised by Sayyid Dildar Ali promoted ‘anti-Sunnism, anti- Akhbarism, and anti-Sufism’ (p. 35) leading gradually to the emergence of an exclusivist and distinctive form of Twelver Shi’ism in the state of Awadh.

Overview Despite the recent military surge against Somalia’s armed Islamist extremist and self- declared al-Qaeda affiliate, Al-Shabaab, its conclusive “defeat” remains elusive. The most likely scenario – already in evidence – is that its armed units will retreat to small- er, remote and rural enclaves, exploiting entrenched and ever-changing clan-based competition; at the same time, other groups of radicalised and well-trained individ- uals will continue to carry out assassinations and terrorist attacks in urban areas, in- cluding increasingly in neighbouring countries, especially Kenya. The long connec- tion between Al-Shabaab’s current leadership and al-Qaeda is likely to strengthen. A critical breakthrough in the fight against the group cannot, therefore, be achieved by force of arms, even less so when it is foreign militaries, not the Somali National Army (SNA), that are in the lead. A more politically-focused approach is required. Even as its territory is squeezed in the medium term, Al-Shabaab will continue to control both money and minds. It has the advantage of at least three decades of Salafi-Wahhabi proselytisation (daawa) in Somalia; social conservatism is already strongly entrenched – including in Somaliland and among Somali minorities in neigh- bouring states – giving it deep reservoirs of fiscal and ideological support, even with- out the intimidation it routinely employs. An additional factor is the group’s proven ability to adapt, militarily and politically – flexibility that is assisted by its leadership’s freedom from direct accountability to any single constituency.
