So there are many people to thank who have been generous with their time, their encouragement and their suggestions. We particularly want to thank our interviewees: Audrey McDonald, Jean Lewis, Beverley Bates, Kit Edwards, Ruth Fink Latukefu, Judith Emmett, Cathy Bloch, Clare Anderson, Lilon Bandler, Bob Makinson, Bruce McFarlane and Wendy and Allan Scarfe (who passed away last year and is missed by us all). The Erskineville Public School community, from its principal and teachers to the parents of its students – and particularly Sean Macken and Angel Nunley – have all been enthusiastic participants in the exciting search for Lucy’s work. We have been greatly assisted by analysts who have offered insights, critical readings and valuable resources: Phillip Deery, Meredith Burgmann, James Beattie, Lisa Milner, Martin Sullivan and Julia Horne. One of the least well-known areas of Lucy’s tireless work was in support of refugees fleeing Nazism in Europe. We turned to community members like Ron Witton and to Nola Symonds and Phillip Moses of the Australian Jewish Historical Society to learn about her work in this area. We were fortunate to have great research done beyond what we could do ourselves by Jayne Reagan in Canberra in the National Library of Australia and the Noel Butlin Archives. Lucy Woodcock was a committed unionist and, although much of her work, such as her contribution to the women’s movement, the Peace movement and working-class and progressive education, was outside the unions, she remained anchored in her commitment to cooperative industrial organisation through unions. She aimed to strengthen all these movements by building alliances between them. Neale Towart, from Unions Australia (previously the NSW Trades and Labor Council), has been most helpful. She understood the power of working with women throughout the world. Among her many accomplishments, Jessie Street championed the creation of the Commission on the Status of Women as a permanent United Nations body to deal with women’s rights. We’re proud she did. Australia has continued its meaningful engagement in international fora.     GLOBAL CINEMA Edited by Katarzyna Marciniak, Anikó Imre, and Áine O’Healy The Global Cinema series publishes innovative scholarship on the transnational themes, industries, economies, and aesthetic elements that increasingly connect cinemas around the world. It promotes theoretically transformative and politi- cally challenging projects that rethink film studies from cross-cultural, comparative perspectives, bringing into focus forms of cinematic production that resist nation- alist or hegemonic frameworks. Rather than aiming at comprehensive geographical coverage, it foregrounds transnational interconnections in the production, dis- tribution, exhibition, study, and teaching of film. Dedicated to global aspects of cinema, this pioneering series combines original perspectives and new method- ological paths with accessibility and coverage. Both “global” and “cinema” remain open to a range of approaches and interpretations, new and traditional. Books pub- lished in the series sustain a specific concern with the medium of cinema but do not defensively protect the boundaries of film studies, recognizing that film exists in a converging media environment. The viewpoint of the directors as well as the audience has drastically changed .In this era the directors are courageous enough to make films with women as central characters.

    A whole new world: Global revolution and Australian social movements in the long Sixties Jon Piccini BA Honours (1st Class) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2013 School of History, Philosophy, Religion & Classics Abstract This thesis explores Australian social movements during the long Sixties through a transnational prism, identifying how the flow of people and ideas across borders was central to the growth and development of diverse campaigns for political change. By making use of a variety of sources—from archives and government reports to newspapers, interviews and memoirs—it identifies a broadening of the radical imagination within movements seeking rights for Indigenous Australians, the lifting of censorship, women’s liberation, the ending of the war in Vietnam and many others. It locates early global influences, such as the Chinese Revolution and increasing consciousness of anti-racist struggles in South Africa and the American South, and the ways in which ideas from these and other overseas sources became central to the practice of Australian social movements. This was a process aided by activists’ travel. Accordingly, this study analyses the diverse motives and experiences of Australian activists who visited revolutionary hotspots from China and Vietnam to Czechoslovakia, Algeria, France and the United States: to protest, to experience or to bring back lessons. While these overseas exploits, breathlessly recounted in articles, interviews and books, were transformative for some, they also exposed the limits of what a transnational politics could achieve in a local setting. Australia also became a destination for the period’s radical activists, provoking equally divisive responses.

When she was a girl she loved horse riding but she did not like the fact that she was expected to ride side-saddle. So when nobody was looking, Jessie would swing her leg across the horse and ride the same way men did. All her life she behaved in ways that people from her background were not expected to behave. When she was a schoolgirl, Jessie met members of the suffragette movement in England and, on a visit to New York in 1915, she volunteered to help in a reception centre for young women arrested as prostitutes. In 1916, Jessie married Kenneth Street, who later became the highest judge in New South Wales. When he was knighted, she became Lady Jessie Street. • Ride side-saddle means to ride a horse with both feet on the same side of the horse.
