Rooks, P Cell: 419-367-6473 Email [email protected] Even with some hurdles to overcome this year we’ve had a good start. We’ve had 3 successful ABC classes, and got off to a good start with Vessel Safety Checks with the Bass Pro fishing tournament. As always if you need to get a safety check for you boat contact anyone on the VSC committee. The weather was great for the Shakedown Cruise to Put-in-Bay and the renaming ceremony for LTC Waugh’s boat was lots of fun! I want to thank everyone there for their hospitality, welcoming Lucia and I onto their boats and offering to share their food and drinks. There are a lot of rendezvous scheduled for this summer we’d love to see everyone get out and enjoy them. Check the schedule in the April Breeze and in the Upcoming Events section of the D29 website you can see our schedule along with the rest of the districts. Don’t let not having a boat stop you, if you need a ride let us know and we will see about getting you there. The club still has a grant to purchase a boat for on the water training. If you happen to see a center console around 18 foot and in very good condition let us know. We are also looking for volunteers, not any different than any other year, to help with the various committees and bridge positions to keep the club running the way that we want it to. This has been made very difficult for the Nomi- nating Committee without having in person meetings for the last year. If you’re able in any way to help with one of these positions, even if its only a little bit, contact the Nominating Committee or anyone on the bridge and let us know. The only way that we continue to grow and be better is by our members volunteering. I want to thank every- one who has volunteered in the past, you’ve made a difference and it’s greatly appreciated! We have an immediate need for a secretary and assistant secretary, Loriann has gone above and beyond in helping us this year but we need to find her replacement. If you can help out at all with this position let me know as soon as possible. The Breeze 3 July/August 2021 The spring ABC Classes have been completed and reported to national. In a very unusual year for in classroom instruction, we successfully graduated 52 students in three America’s Boating Course classes. Many, many thanks are in order for Nelson Evans, S, Stf/C Larry Cole, SN-IN, and 1st Lt Michelle Abel, P, for presenting, organizing, managing, grading and recording results to national and the state of Ohio. We could not have realized this success without your involvement. Lt/C Rickie Waugh, P, and Lt/C Frank Czerniejewski, P, and P/D/ C Jason Snook, SN-IN, also spent time making the classes a valuable experience to those who attended. Larry Cole presented an Operations Training Seminar to squadron members, updating attendees on USPS opera- tional details. The 3-hour seminar gave a quick discussion of the Operations Manual. There are many great seminars provided by USPS. This summer I would like to gauge interest in members attending a few. Seminars usually last 2 hours and cover a specific topic like Anchoring, Mariners Compass, Boating on Rivers and Locks, Radar, etc. There is no charge for the seminars. The squadron will provide the PowerPoint presentation and text for each slide, and arrange a room with necessary equipment. All that is required is for members to volun- teer to teach a class. You don’t have to be a certified instructor or an expert in the topic you want to present, as all material is provided. Presenters also will get credit for the seminar. There is a amazing amount of valuable and help- ful boating information out there and with your help we can make it available. Please contact me if you have any questions. I will be sending out an email listing the seminars in the near future and hope members will want to en- gage and benefit from this opportunity. She was the first of nine siblings, six of which survived. As with most large families, Violet spent her childhood caring for her younger broth- ers and sisters. While still quite young she became very ill and was diagnosed with tuberculosis, but survived. At sixteen, her father died causing her family to migrate to England. Her mother found a job working as a stewardess on a steamship leaving Violet to care for her younger siblings. Within a few years her mother became ill and had to leave her job so Violet followed in her mother’s footsteps and tried to gain a job as a stewardess as well. Unfortunately, Violet had great difficulty in procuring a job as a stewardess since no one wanted to hire both a young and pretty lady; most employers viewed this as a disadvantage. So she had to dress down, wearing older clothing and no makeup, thus making her appearance somewhat frumpy and less attractive. At twenty-one years of age she got her first stewardess position with the Royal Mail Line onboard the Orinoco in 1908. In 1911 Miss Violet secured a position as a stewardess for the White Star Line, a very prominent British shipping company, having been around for over fifty years, being especially noted for their luxurious liners and some very prominent passengers. The White Star Line was well aware of their success and ordered three more vessels from Harland & Wolff.
