S AS WE RECALL The Growth of Agricultural Estimates^ 1933-1961 L M Brooks Statistical Reporting s Service U.S. Department of Agriculture Washington, D.C As We Recall, THE GROWTH OF AGRICULTURAL ESTIMATES, 1933-1961 U.S. OEPÎ. or AGRlCUtTURE NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL UBRARY OECIT CATALOGmC PREP E. M. Brooks, Statistical Reporting Service, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture 1977 I FOREWORD The Statistical Reporting Service, as with any organization, needs to know its past to understand the present and appraise the future. Accordingly, our technical procedures are peri- ^odically set forth in ''Scope and Methods of the Statistical Reporting Service," and the agency's early development and program expansion were presented in "The Story of Agricultural Estimates." However, most important are the people who de- veloped this complex and efficient statistical service for agriculture and those who maintain and expand it today. Dr. Harry C. Trelogan, SRS Administrator, 1961-1975, arranged for Emerson M. Brooks to prepare this informal account of some of the people who steered SRS's course from 1933 to 1961. The series of biographical sketches selected by the author are representative of the people who helped develop the per- sonality of SRS and provide the talent to meet challenges for accurate and timely agricultural information. This narrative touching the critical issues of that period and the way they'^ were resolved adds to our understanding of the agency and helps maintain the esprit de corps that has strengthened our work since it started in 1862. Our history provides us some valuable lessons, for "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." W.

  • Writing the Bicycle
Writing the Bicycle: Women, Rhetoric, and Technology in Late Nineteenth-Century America Sarah Overbaugh Hallenbeck A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Jane Danielewicz Jordynn Jack Daniel Anderson Jane Thrailkill Beverly Taylor ABSTRACT Sarah Overbaugh Hallenbeck Writing the Bicycle: Women, Rhetoric, and Technology in Late Nineteenth-Century America (Under the direction of Jane Danielewicz and Jordynn Jack) This project examines the intersections among rhetoric, gender, and technology, examining in particular the ways that American women appropriated the new technology of the bicycle at the turn of the twentieth century. It asks: how are technologies shaped by discourse that emanates both from within and beyond professional boundaries? In what ways do technologies, in turn, reshape the social networks in which they emerge—making available new arguments and rendering others less persuasive? And to what extent are these arguments furthered by the changed conditions of embodiment and materiality that new technologies often initiate? Writing the Bicycle: Women, Rhetoric and Technology in Late Nineteenth- Century America addresses these questions by considering how women’s interactions with the bicycle allowed them to make new claims about their minds and bodies, and transformed the gender order in the process. The introduction, “Rhetoric, Gender, Technology,” provides an overview of the three broad conversations to which the project primarily contributes: science and technology studies, feminist historiography, and rhetorical theory. In addition, it outlines a “techno-feminist” materialist methodology that emphasizes the material ii and rhetorical agency of users in shaping technologies beyond their initial design and distribution phases.

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Myth and the Modern Problem: Mythic Thinking in Twentieth-Century Britain A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of History By Matthew Kane Sterenberg EVANSTON, ILLINOIS December 2007 2 © Copyright by Matthew Kane Sterenberg 2007 All Rights Reserved 3 ABSTRACT Myth and the Modern Problem: Mythic Thinking in Twentieth-Century Britain Matthew Sterenberg This dissertation, “Myth and the Modern Problem: Mythic Thinking in Twentieth- Century Britain,” argues that a widespread phenomenon best described as “mythic thinking” emerged in the early twentieth century as way for a variety of thinkers and key cultural groups to frame and articulate their anxieties about, and their responses to, modernity. As such, can be understood in part as a response to what W.H. Auden described as “the modern problem”: a vacuum of meaning caused by the absence of inherited presuppositions and metanarratives that imposed coherence on the flow of experience. At the same time, the dissertation contends that— paradoxically—mythic thinkers’ response to, and critique of, modernity was itself a modern project insofar as it took place within, and depended upon, fundamental institutions, features, and tenets of modernity. Mythic thinking was defined by the belief that myths—timeless rather than time-bound explanatory narratives dealing with ultimate questions—were indispensable frameworks for interpreting experience, and essential tools for coping with and criticizing modernity. Throughout the period 1900 to 1980, it took the form of works of literature, art, philosophy, and theology designed to show that ancient myths had revelatory power for modern life, and that modernity sometimes required creation of new mythic narratives.

Available online at www.sciencedirect.com Journal of Business Research 61 (2008) 798–803 Fast and frequent: Investigating box office revenues of motion picture sequels ⁎ Suman Basuroy a,1, Subimal Chatterjee b, a College of Business, Florida Atlantic University, Jupiter, Florida 33458, United States b School of Management, Binghamton University, Binghamton, New York 13902, United States Received 26 October 2006; accepted 21 July 2007 Abstract This paper conceptualizes film sequels as brand extensions of a hedonic product and tests (1) how their box office revenues compare to that of their parent films, and (2) if the time interval between the sequel and the parent, and the number of intervening sequels, affect the revenues earned by the sequels at the box office. Using a random sample of 167 films released between 1991 and 1993, we find that sequels do not match the box office revenues of the parent films. However, they do better than their contemporaneous non-sequels, more so when they are released sooner (rather than later) after their parents, and when more (rather than fewer) intervening sequels come before them. Like other extensions of hedonic products, sequels exhibit satiation to the extent that their weekly box office collections fall faster over time relative to contemporaneous non- sequels. Managerial implications of the results are discussed. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Keywords: Sequels; Brand extensions; Box office revenues; Satiation 1. DIPLOMARBEIT Titel der Diplomarbeit „Narrative and the self in British author-autobiography: Kingsley Amis, Martin Amis, Elizabeth Jane Howard“ Verfasserin Verena Gappmaier angestrebter akademischer Grad Magistra der Philosophie (Mag. phil.) Wien, 2009 Studienkennzahl lt. Studienblatt: A 343 Studienrichtung lt. Studienblatt: Diplomstudium Anglistik und Amerikanistik Betreuer: Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rudolf Weiss To my parents Hans and Marianne Gappmaier with love There are various people I would like to thank: my supervisor Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Rudolf Weiss – for his invaluable support, encouragement and expertise, my family – for everything, Tom – for sharing all the joys and frustrations associated with this thesis, Theresa, Ursula and Verena – for being great friends and supporting me emotionally, Prof. Mag. Dr. Richard Lechner – for sparking my interest in English literature, and again Verena – for proofreading the final draft. Our lives with all their miracles and wonders are merely a discontinuous string of incidents – until we create the narrative that gives them meaning.
