Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. Mbiavanga Fernando Abstract The relation between verbal affixes and their effect on the predicate argument structure of the verbs that host them has been the focus of many studies in linguistics, with special reference to Bantu languages in recent years. Given the colonial policy on indigenous languages in Angola, Kikongo, as is the case of other Bantu languages in that country, has not been sufficiently studied. This study explores the form and function of six verbal affixes, including the order in which they occur in the verb stem. The study maintains that the applicative and causative are valency-increasing verbal affixes and, as such, give rise to double object constructions in Kikongo. The passive, reciprocal, reflexive and stative are valency-decreasing and, as such, they reduce the valency of the verb by one object. Date:....................................................................................................................................... ii ABSTRACT The resettlement of refugees to a third country is characterised in dominant humanitarian and political discourses as a durable solution to ‘displacement.’ This thesis challenges that presumption through an ethnographic exploration of how ‘displacement’ is experienced by Central African women living in different contexts of refugee settlement in Australia and Uganda. It illustrates how, for the small number of refugees who are offered resettlement to a third country, a sense of ‘displacement’ can both endure and emerge within such settings. ‘Displacement’ is critically explored here as an embodied experience that is oriented through the subjectivities of Central African women across settings of refugee settlement in both Australian and Uganda. Through a comparative, in-depth analysis of ‘displacement’ in both contexts, the assumption that resettlement offers a durable solution of ‘refuge’ is critically unsettled.

    Exhibition Texts CONGO AS FICTION – Art Worlds between Past and Present 22 november 2019 – 15 march 2020 Today, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is famous for its vibrant art scene across the world. However, in the past, too, the Congo produced impressive masks, figures, and design pieces, many of them today icons of African art. Now, for the first time, these two time levels are interwoven in an exhibition on the Congo in which historical photographs and artworks are juxtaposed with expressions of contemporary art. The ensuing dialogue pivots on the extensive archive of Hans Himmelheber which was donated to the Museum Rietberg over the past five years. Himmelheber (1908–2003) was a German art anthropologist who travelled widely in the former Belgian colony in 1938/39. The archive includes his private collection as well as his photographic and written legacy. The impressive artworks and photographs, some of them on display for the first time, bear testimony to the aesthetics and significance of artistic creativity in the Congo of the 1930s. Moreover, with the help of his diary we were able to reconstruct the context and the conditions under which he acquired the objects in the field. At the same time, however, we wished to avoid a biased Western view of the art of the Congo, so we invited six Congolese artists to creatively engage with Hans Himmelheber’s archive. These newly created works are complemented by works of seven further artists from the Congo. What they all have in common is that they not only deal with their own cultural legacy but also critically address colonial history and European ways of collecting.

    FOREST HUNTER-GATHERERS AND THEIR WORLD: A Study of the Mbendjele Yaka Pygmies of Congo-Brazzaville and Their Secular and Religious Activities and Representations 2002 JEROME LEWIS Department of Social Anthropology London School of Economics and Political Science A Thesis submitted to the University of London for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. 1 Abstract This thesis is about a forest hunter-gatherer people, the Mbendjele Yaka Pygmies of northern Congo-Brazzaville. The thesis is based on field research carried out between 1994 and 2001. I begin by examining certain key terms used in the thesis and by situating my research within the existing literature. Research methodologies are presented and the fieldwork experience described. I provide an overview of the historical, political and economic context of the research including an outline assessment of the main historical reconstructions of regional history. Conservationist and loggers’ models of the forest are juxtaposed with Mbendjele ways of representing landscape and the forest environment. I discuss the significance of the forest in Mbendjele social experience and its role as the ideal environment for social life. I examine the way the Mbendjele classify animals and the cosmological significance of hunting and killing. This theme is continued with a presentation of ekila, a complex set of practices and beliefs that regulate the interactions of people with animals and express a complex relationship between human fertility and the correct handling of prey animals. I continue the analysis of Mbendjele collective representations with a presentation of the activity of massana. The link between children’s play and adult rituals implicit in the use of this term is analysed.

    O poder político entre os Mbûndu Patrício Batsîkama1 Resumo: Weber e Dahl são de opinião que o poder é sempre binômio e relaciona duas entidades A e B, onde um exerce o Comando, e o outro submete-se a Obediência. A origem do poder estaria, nesse caso no indivíduo normativo consoante os capitais (sociais, culturais, econômico, etc.) que possui e da maneira que gere face as dinâmicas sociais e os desafios que se apresentam. O Ser Humano age de acordo com o seu intuito, ele reage seguindo o seu “Eu”. O Ser Social age respeitando as normas da sociabilidade e reage consoante as normas (sua Cultura) na sociedade que pertence ou pensa pertencer. No primeiro caso (Ser Humano = indivíduo) nota-se o medo no seu “agir”, ao passo que no segundo (Ser Social: utu) a necessidade vital perante a Moral ou “Código de vida harmoniosa”. Nos dois casos, o poder se verifica por Obediência. Mas, quando o medo desaparece do Ser Humano e que, enquanto Ser Social, ele opta pela desobediência – pacífica ou por violência – o poder entra em crise. O texto que agora se apresenta versa sobre a questão do “poder político” entre os Mbûndu. Trata-se de algumas reflexões sobre o poder, buscando formas simples de explicá-lo nas nossas sociedades angolanas. Com isso, trazer a tona o que os Angolanos em geral – e os Mbûndu em particular – entenderiam com as autarquias, democracias, etc. É um debate no qual se espera maior contribuição.
