Library of Congress catalog number 72-90080 Preface OBERT WOODS BLISS began collecting Pre-Columbian art because he was lured by the beauty of the materials, the fineness of the craftsmanship, and Rthe fascination of the iconography of the first Pre-Columbian objects he saw. The Bliss Collection has been, since its beginning in 1912, primarily an esthetic one-probably the first esthetically oriented collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts- so it seemed appropriate to organize a conference that would focus on a cross-cultural, art-historical approach. When we sought for a theme, the first that came to mind was that great unifying factor in Pre-Columbian cultures, the feline. Large cats such as the jaguar and puma preoccupied the artists and religious thinkers of the very earliest civilizations, the Olmec in Mesoamerica and Chavín in Peru. The feline continued to be an important theme throughout much of the New World until the European con- quests. We are indebted to Barbara Braun for the title, “The Cult of the Feline.” Pre-Columbian studies merge many disciplines. This conference was not only cross- cultural but cross-disciplinary-with contributions from anthropologists, archaeolo- gists, art historians, and ethnologists-since we believed that the art-historical ap- proach to iconography should be based on the knowledge of what has been found archaeologically and what is known of the customs of the present-day peoples who have been isolated enough to carry on what must be very ancient traditions. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Inferring Ancient Technology and Practices of the Elite Maya Kingship Through the Application of Materials Engineering Characterization Modalities A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering by Kristina Alyssa Cheung 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Inferring Ancient Technology and Practices of the Elite Maya Kingship Through the Application of Materials Engineering Characterization Modalities by Kristina Alyssa Cheung Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Ioanna Kakoulli, Chair This project focuses on the characterization of materials from burial offerings and painted decoration in a royal Maya tomb at El Zotz, Guatemala, and their association with mortuary rituals. Archaeological findings included vessels, jade masks, organic materials (wood, cord, and textiles), specular hematite cubes, shells with powdered cinnabar, green (malachite) painted stucco assumed to have decorated the wooden bier where the king was resting, and caches of lip-to-lip Aguila Orange bowls containing human phalanges. This paper describes findings from non-invasive and non-destructive analytical techniques including XRF, VPSEM- EDS, and XRD, emphasizing the potential of these combined technologies in the identification of organic and inorganic markers to infer burial customs. The nature and location of the findings, the evidence of pigment coloration on the bones employing hematite and cinnabar, and the indication of exposure of the bones to high temperatures suggest highly complex, even protracted mortuary practices of Maya elite. ii The thesis of Kristina Alyssa Cheung is approved. PRESE N TACIÓ N Patricia Fournier García Fernando López Aguilar Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia William Timothy Sanders (19 de abril de 1926), oriundo de Patchogue, Nue- va York, fue el hijo mayor de una numerosa familia de clase trabajadora y limitados recursos económicos. Como alumno de bachillerato fue ávido lec- tor del volumen de William H. Prescott acerca de la historia de la conquista de México, que incorpora en la narrativa observaciones acerca de la antigua civilización mexica, obra que fue clave como motivación para que Sanders se abocara apasionadamente al estudio de las culturas prehispánicas de Mesoamérica. Después de prestar servicio en la marina durante la Segun- da Guerra Mundial, como veterano de esa contienda, se hizo acreedor a los recursos monetarios requeridos para cursar estudios universitarios en Harvard, prestigiosa institución donde obtuvo, en 1949, la licenciatura y, en 1957, el doctorado en antropología [Parsons, 2008]. En palabras de Michael D. Coe [2008], compañero universitario de Sanders en Harvard con quien mantuviera nexos personales y académi- cos por décadas, la obra Principios de la Antropología de Chapple y Coon [1948] constituyó una fuerte influencia en las investigaciones de Sanders en Mesoamérica en torno a la complejidad social y la adaptación ecológica con bases materialistas. Metals Distribution and Contamination in the Gulf of Mexico
METALS DISTRIBUTION AND CONTAMINATION IN THE GULF OF MEXICO Alfonso Vázquez-Botello, Susana Villanueva-Fragoso and Leticia Rosales-Hoz INTRODUCTION Metals are a natural part of the earth’s crust and are found in rocks, soils, sediments, water and volcanic eruptions. However, in the years following the industrial revolution major changes occurred in the natural concentration of metals, due to their widespread use for industrial and human purposes. One clear example of this is found in the Gulf of Mexico, where the excessive presence of some metals in the coastal ecosystems is a result of their introduction through contamination processes and contribution by rivers, which include the two largest deltas that run into the Gulf of Mexico: the Mississippi River in the U.S.A. and the Grijalva-Usumacinta rivers in Mexico. The contamination from the rivers and deltas includes toxic wastes such as metals, oil- based hydrocarbons and persistent organic contaminants such as pesticides and PCB. The industrial and commercial activities carried out in the big port areas of Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Houston and Galveston in the U.S.A., and Tampico-Madero, Altamira, Veracruz, Alvarado, Coatzacoalcos, Dos Bocas and Ciudad del Carmen in Mexico, are potential sources of contamination to marine and coastal environments. There are 22 rivers in Mexico that run into the Gulf, the most important of which is the Rio Grande (Río Bravo), that forms part of the border between Mexico and the U.S.A. A series of dams have been built along the Rio Grande, regulating its flow into the Gulf of Mexico.
