Mnoga pitanja traže nove poglede i analize. Historiografiju legitimiraju pouzdane i provjerljive obavijesti o minulim procesima, događajima i ličnostima, kazivanje o prošlosti jezikom činjenica, brojki i relevantnih uvida. No, historijskog znanja nema bez autorove misli, bez svjesnog zahvata u predmetnu materiju i odnosa prema tragovima prošlosti.

  • The Differential Impact of War and Trauma on Kosovar Albanian Women Living in Post-War Kosova
The Differential Impact of War and Trauma on Kosovar Albanian Women Living in Post-War Kosova Hanna Kienzler Department of Anthropology McGill University, Montreal June 2010 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © 2010 Hanna Kienzler Abstract The war in Kosova had a profound impact on the lives of the civilian population and was a major cause of material destruction, disintegration of social fabrics and ill health. Throughout 1998 and 1999, the number of killings is estimated to be 10,000 with the majority of the victims being Kosovar Albanian killed by Serbian forces. An additional 863,000 civilians sought or were forced into refuge outside Kosova and 590,000 were internally displaced. Moreover, rape and torture, looting, pillaging and extortion were committed. The aim of my dissertation is to rewrite aspects of the recent belligerent history of Kosova with a focus on how history is created and transformed through bodily expressions of distress. The ethnographic study was conducted in two Kosovar villages that were hit especially hard during the war. In both villages, my research was based on participant observation which allowed me to immerse myself in Kosovar culture and the daily activities of the people under study. The dissertation is divided into four interrelated parts. The first part is based on published accounts describing how various external power regimes affected local Kosovar culture, and how the latter was continuously transformed by the local population throughout history. The second part focuses on collective memories and explores how villagers construct their community‟s past in order to give meaning to their everyday lives in a time of political and economic upheaval.

  • Kanun of Leke Dukagjini Customary Law of Northern Albania
European Scientific Journal October 2015 edition vol.11, No.28 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 KANUN OF LEKE DUKAGJINI CUSTOMARY LAW OF NORTHERN ALBANIA Arben Cara Lecturer in the Faculty of Political-Juridical Sciences, “Aleksander Moisiu” University of Durres, Republic of Albania Mimoza Margjeka Judge in the first instance of Durres’ Court, Republic of Albania Abstract The Kanun of Lek Dukagjini as the customary law of Northern Albania is the most unique aspect of this Albanian part of society. This Kanun sets up the rules, upon which the culture is based, focusing on the concepts of honor, like hospitality and besa, and the topmost of the society, is Family. This ancient legal code defines the Albanian character, even today. It prevented assimilation throughout history, and continues to do so. The Kanun of Leke Dukagjini is the most distinguishing feature of the Albanian culture. The preservation of customary law was one of the most important elements in helping the Albanian people to maintain their individuality under Ottoman domination. The Code of Lek Dukagjini is the body of “customary law" under which Albanians, particularly the northern clans, have conducted their lives. Not only did the Common Law provide enforceable legal mechanisms which ensured a relatively normal evolution of society and the normality of the economy, social and family relations, it also provided mechanisms for organizing local government and for the settlement of disputes. This therefore constitutes the main aim of this study. Keywords: Kanun, customary law, Albania north, self government, sacred values Introduction Albanian culture has been strong enough to resist assimilation by others even though Albania occupies a strategic location, historically and politically.

Steinmetz, Chair Professor Howard A. Kimeldorf Professor Margaret R. Somers Professor Ronald Grigor Suny Professor Michael D. Kennedy, Brown University © Besnik Pula 2011 DEDICATION To my wife, Shpresa. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS As I ponder all the individuals that have had a role in making this dissertation see the light of day, I realize how difficult it is to properly recount the numerous ways and uncountable acts, large and small, with which others have shaped, supported, and directly or indirectly helped me arrive at this finished product. I was extremely fortunate to have had a group of exceptional historical social scientists as members of my committee, whose support carried me from my early days as a graduate student at Michigan through the years of research and writing of this dissertation. All these individuals have made tremendous efforts in giving me the best training a rookie graduate student in sociology can get. I can only hope to live up to the high standards they have set. My principal advisor, George Steinmetz, has played an enormous intellectual and mentoring role not only during the research and writing of this dissertation, but during my entire graduate career. George was patient enough to stick with me as I scrapped my original dissertation topic to end up working on the one here.

Based on an ongoing multilocal anthropological field research con- ducted by Thomas Schad, a PhD Candidate in Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and So- cieties, Free University Berlin, this research extensivey discusses the rediscovery of the Balkans by the contemporary Turkish State and the AKP Rule. Deriving from the findings acquired in ethnographic field studies in three Bosniak neighborhoods and hometown associations in İstanbul and İzmir, this research explores the emerging “third space” between Turkey and Bos- nia. It investigates the role of late and post-Ottoman Muslim migration (Muhacirlik) in Turkish cultural diplomats’ rediscovery of the lost Ottoman lands, and how contemporary neo-Otto- manism, conversely, is perceived by Bosniaks in Turkey and beyond.

It reflects events he lived through, his personal impressions, and gives conclusions, which provide lessons for all periods, drawn from the hostile activity carried out openly or behind the scenes, against our National Liberation Movement, our people's revolution and socialist Albania by the Anglo-American bourgeoisie. It brings out clearly the clash between the diabolical plans, attempts, manoeuvres and concrete activities of Anglo-American imperialism to put Albania under its sway, on the one hand, and the vigilance, the blow for blow struggle of the Communist Party of Albania and its General Secretary, the leader of the Army and the National Liberation Front and the whole patriotic Alba• nian people, Comrade Enver Hoxha, on the other hand, to discover, unmask, defeat and destroy the imperialist strategy and tactics in regard to Albania. These memoirs now being published, were written in 1975. The book is available in Albanian and several foreign languages. 3 I A LITTLE HISTORY Albania — a token for barter for the «Brit- ish Lion». • Nationalist Crossroads and Crosshairs: on External and Internal Sources of Albanian and Serbian National Mythology
Nationalist Crossroads and Crosshairs: On External and Internal Sources of Albanian and Serbian National Mythology Matvey Lomonosov Department of Sociology McGill University, Montreal June 2018 A dissertation submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology © Matvey Lomonosov, 2018 Abstract This dissertation employs comparative historical methods to investigate the development of Albanian and Serbian national identity over the last two centuries. More narrowly, it traces the emergence and evolution of two foundational national myths: the story of the Illyrian origins of the Albanian nation and the narrative of the 1389 Battle of Kosovo. The study focuses on micro- and meso-level processes, the life course of mythmakers and specific historical situations. For this, it relies on archival data from Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia, as well as a wide body of published primary and secondary historical sources. The dissertation is composed of four separate articles. In the first article, I offer evidence that the Kosovo myth, which is often seen as a “crucial” supporting case for ethno-symbolist theory, is a modern ideological construct. For evidence, the article focuses on temporal, geographical and cultural ruptures in the supposedly long-standing “medieval Kosovo legacy” and the way the narrative was promoted among South Slavs in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It finds that Serbian-speaking diaspora intellectuals from the Habsburg Empire and the governments in Belgrade and Cetinje played crucial roles imparting the Kosovo myth to the Balkan masses. Thus, it is hard to account for the rise of national identities and local conflicts in the Balkans without a closer look at foreign intervention and the history of states and institutions.

Forum of EthnoGeoPolitics Main Article—Extensive Review Essay and Research Note What (Little) We Know about Albanian Tribes: Reflections and Tabulations Caspar ten Dam Robert Elsie, The Tribes of Albania: History, Society and Culture London/New York: I.B. Tauris, 2015, 368 pages. ISBN: 978-1-78453-401-1 (hardback) / 978-0- 85773-932-2 (e-book) In Honour and Memory of Dr Robert Elsie (1950 – 2017) This essay is about major findings in Elsie’s Tribes of Albania, some of his related works, and other sources. It is based on a much shorter book review solely focused on Tribes of Albania that already has been published in the preceding issue of our journal (see Ten Dam 2018: 38-45). The latter review—and perhaps parts of this essay as well—will form part of a broader yet shorter review essay on several of Robert’s Elsie last works on the Albanians, which the peer-reviewed journal Iran and the Caucasus (Brill) intends to publish sometime this or next year. NB: citations and other references from Elsie’s Tribes of Albania—the main book under review— are indicated only by the relevant page numbers of that work, e.g. ‘(p. 1)’, ‘(p. 100)’, etcetera (sometimes e.g. ‘(Elsie p. 100)’ in order to distinguish it clearly from citations and references of other sources in the same paragraph). The other source references in the main text and the footnotes of this article are shown in the Author-Date version of the Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA) referencing style i.e. ‘(Author Year: page number)’, the preferred referencing format of this journal.
