This research investigated the old practice of customary mediation in the Northern Albanian society. The data used in this research was mainly generated through interviews with community mediators. The strategies and techniques used by the mediators in twenty-seven cases of killings (due to blood feud, momentary and previous fight or accidents) were analyzed. The strategies were analyzed on the basis of Bercovitch and Huston classification: communication-facilitation, rocedural-formulation and directive-manipulation strategies. The techniques were analyzed based on Callister and Wall‘s table of mediator‘s techniques in community mediation. Further more the reconciliatory process was also analyzed through Lederach‘s framework of the elements of reconciliation: truth, mercy, justice and peace. Examining the twenty-seven cases of mediation in the Albanian context we can conclude that most of the killings happened due to momentary fights and mostly they were people who had relations with each other. In analyzing the strategies of the mediators it is searched whether they use more communication-facilitation, procedural-formulation or manipulation. The findings showed that in most case the mediators used either iii communication-facilitation or directive-manipulation. The techniques used in these cases reflect the features of Albanian mediation but they also give us insight on other techniques the mediators use in community mediation in penal case. These techniques are bounded by the cultural background and the rules of the Customary Law. Albanian traditional mediation bares the characteristics of VOM and the traditional mediators abide by the Restorative Justice principles. Albanian mediation shows to bare the characteristics of the cultural context in which it takes place. The values found in the Albanian customary law, Kanun, in a way guide the mediation process as well. The findings also suggested that some of the elements of reconciliation are understood differently in the Albanian culture. iv ÖZET KUZEY ARNAVUTLUK‘TA UZLAğTIRICI ARABULUCUK ĞNCELEMESĞ: GELENEKSEL ARABULUCULARIN ROLÜ Alma Shkreli UyusmazlÛk Analizi ve Çözümü Yüksek Lisans, Sanatta Yeterlilik Tezi Tez DanÛsmanÛ: Doç. Two years later we moved to Skopje where my brother Genc was born and after two other years we moved to Prizren and then from Prizren we moved to Gjakova, which was the hometown of my mother and my father, then I continued elementary school in Prizren. And the Shkolla e Mesme e Artit1 in the beautiful Peja, after five years of studying there I went to University at the University of Arts in Belgrade, there I spent five years studying in the same academy. Then, I finished the Masters Degree, I mean the post—graduation studies and in the meantime there was an open call all around Yugoslavia according to which the Japanese government was giving a scholarship for a two year artistic residency in Japan, I won it and went to Japan to study for two years.

At the end of the eighties, life expectancy at birth passed the boundary of seventy, although the country’s GDP per capita was $ 2500 in 1990, the lowest in Europe (Madison 1995).This puzzled scholars, who either doubted the success of Albania, or because of the lack of firm information, speculated with different explanations (Watson, 1995). This research was initiated by this controversy in trying to first, estimate the scale of Albania’s success in improving life expectancy and document the mortality transition in Albania during the period 1950-1990.

The Traditional Tower Houses of Kosovo and Albania - Origin, Development and Influences. Caroline Jaeger-Klein1 1 Vienna University of Technology, Department for History of Architecture and Building Archaeology, Karlsplatz 13/251; A-1040 Vienna, Austria [email protected] Abstract. Gheg-Albanians as well as Tosk-Albanians consider a distinct tower-house type of their traditional heritage. The closer look upon the structures in their geographical distribution from the Dukajin plains in nowadays Kosovo into the Dropull valley in Southern Albania provides a wide range of variations. Generally those structures served as impressive residential houses (banesa) for rich landlords, warlords, tax collectors and merchants performing a rural- urban lifestyle. Therefore, a sophisticated blend of the all-time defendable Albanian tower house (kulla), still existing quite intact in the western Kosovo plains, and the comfortable Turkish life- style influenced residence was developed during the long centuries of the Ottoman rule over Western Balkans.

  • The Differential Impact of War and Trauma on Kosovar Albanian Women Living in Post-War Kosova
The Differential Impact of War and Trauma on Kosovar Albanian Women Living in Post-War Kosova Hanna Kienzler Department of Anthropology McGill University, Montreal June 2010 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © 2010 Hanna Kienzler Abstract The war in Kosova had a profound impact on the lives of the civilian population and was a major cause of material destruction, disintegration of social fabrics and ill health. Throughout 1998 and 1999, the number of killings is estimated to be 10,000 with the majority of the victims being Kosovar Albanian killed by Serbian forces. An additional 863,000 civilians sought or were forced into refuge outside Kosova and 590,000 were internally displaced. Moreover, rape and torture, looting, pillaging and extortion were committed. The aim of my dissertation is to rewrite aspects of the recent belligerent history of Kosova with a focus on how history is created and transformed through bodily expressions of distress. The ethnographic study was conducted in two Kosovar villages that were hit especially hard during the war. In both villages, my research was based on participant observation which allowed me to immerse myself in Kosovar culture and the daily activities of the people under study. The dissertation is divided into four interrelated parts. The first part is based on published accounts describing how various external power regimes affected local Kosovar culture, and how the latter was continuously transformed by the local population throughout history. The second part focuses on collective memories and explores how villagers construct their community‟s past in order to give meaning to their everyday lives in a time of political and economic upheaval.
