What a milestone for an Association with such humble beginnings Load Testing NSW Rail- (originating in Victoria in 1951 with less than 10 members) to celebrate its 86 way Bridges “Blue Sapphire” anniversary with operating branches in four mainland states and a membership approaching 1200. In October 1967 I joined the AMRA and became a member of the Vic- Enjoy Shunting Again 88 torian branch which in those days had about 130 members but the monthly meetings held at the All Saints Church hall in Kooyong attracted less than 20 members. Arrangements were in hand to lease the waiting Martindale Creek Expan- 93 room at North Port railway station, but this venture was short lived as at- sion tendances fell and we returned to All Saints. In 1971 the ex RSL hall at Glen Iris was purchased as the future home of AMRA Victorian branch. With excellent clubrooms, the magnificent “Stonnington Valley” HO layout My Beautiful Railroad 96 and the popular “G” scale outdoor garden railway, the Victorian Branch now has some 260 members. I am what is called a “Dabbler” in model railways. PAGE 86 AMRA JOURNAL NO.352 – JUL/AUG 2O16 In the last issue of Journal we included photos of six C38 class 4-6-2 express passenger engines used as load testing on the second Hawkesbury River Railway Bridge, opened for service in 1946. On this page, in three photos above, we go back in time 14 years earlier to rec- ord load testing on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The opening in 1932 provided the spectacle of dozens of steam engines lined up end to end, with the Bridge initially providing four rail tracks. For the test, all four tracks were filled with steam engines. Two tracks were then assigned to run trams, and in later years the rails were lifted for road traffic to connect with the Cahill Expressway over Circular Quay. Two railway tracks on the western side remain to this day connecting the City with the North Shore Line. Now we go back in time yet another 25 years to 1907. This gives you 25 years to paddle your canoe up- stream from the Hawkesbury River Bridge and, if you paddle against the flow of water and stay on the major tributary, you will find this major waterway supporting your fragile craft is now known as the Nepean River. A new twin-track bridge across the Nepean River to replace the original crossing was opened in May 1907. The larger image shows NSWGR dignitaries and engine crew assembled for the official photograph. No one is hatless, waistcoats were popular (with a pocket watch on a chain) and a moustache was fashionable if not mandatory. A rolled umbrella completed the attire, while the executives chose a bowler hat. AMRA JOURNAL NO.352 – JUL/AUG 2O16 PAGE 87 What interests us is the four engines behind the well-dressed gathering. They are members of the T class, 2-8-0. In his classic work Locomotives of Australia, Leon Oberg records this class as “possibly one of Austral- ia’s most trouble-free designs.” The first entered service in 1896.
