Commemoration of '98 when I was. present at the laying of the foundation stone in St. Stephen's Green to Wolfe Tone. About 1900 or 1901 I was approached by a brother-in-law of my own, William Brennan (since deceased) to know if I would be willing to became a member of the I.R.B. He explained its objects to me and I was a willing app1icnt for admission. The club to which I was introduced was named the Thomas Clarke Looby '98 Club. he then Centre was James O'Connor. He was a representative for all Ireland of the O'Meara Bacon Company. The Secretary was John J, O'Brien, an Auditor, whom I afterwards found out was employed in J. J. Reynold's Auditing Establishment in Westmoreland street. The Treasurer was John Morrissey, a Dairy Proprietor in Marrowbone Lane. Those were the three officials of the Club at that time. Meetings were held in the Foresters Hall, 41 Parnell Square. I was only two or two and a halt years a member when I was myself elected Centre of the Club at the request of those three officers, and held office from that time as Centre. -

Émilie Berthillot 1 After decades of riots throughout the 19th century,1 the Irish rebels fighting for Home Rule decided to foster a rebellion taking advantage of the involvement of Great Britain in the First World War. To fight against British forces, Irish activists were in desperate need of weapons whose importation was banned by the Proclamation of King George V issued on 4 December 1913 (Figgis, 2014, p. XXV). They thus turned to Germany to provide them with illegal ones. -

Performances of Irish ballads remained popular with English audiences but the publication of Stanford’s song collection An Irish Idyll in Six Miniatures in 1901 by Boosey and Hawkes in London marks a shift to a different type of Irish song. -

Musical Allusions in Finnegans Wake

Finnegans Wake also has songs in it. Many songs: titles, lines, mere words, or simply rhythms that are detected instinctively by those who happen to see them. For those who do not, we are now publishing a book that aims at an inventory of all the music in the book: it is a heavily processed version of J. C. Hodgart and Mabel P. Worthington’s Song in the Works of James Joyce, published in 1959. The songs, too, point to something. They are doors that lead to meaning. Such connections between words, or just sounds, rather, and a large number of things that could only with difficulty be named, are the very essence of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake. Musical Allusions in Finnegans Wake is, however, different from the other books we have published so far in our series of Joyce Lexicography. Those who know that Joyce was one of the best Irish tenors, yet he gave up singing in favour of writing, realize why. The connections between certain words and other words, whether titles of books, excerpts from them, names of authors, or simply words from another language are, eventually, a matter of spoken sounds.
