The Living Newspaper: Extra Extra The new 2013 Southern Exposure Off-Site Graue Award project by Liz Magic Laser August 7-11, 2013
San Francisco, CA, July 24, 2013 – Southern Exposure is pleased to announce a newly commissioned public project through its SoEx Off-Site Graue Award, featuring work from internationally recognized artist Liz Magic Laser. The Living Newspaper: Extra Extra is her first West Coast performance project. Over the course of five days, Laser and her collaborators, actors Audrey Crabtree and Michael Wiener, will stage public performances and man-on-the-street interviews inspired by the daily news in and around a Market Street newspaper kiosk in downtown San Francisco.
In addition to morning and evening street performances, the public is invited to participate in workshops led by Laser, Crabtree and Wiener, in which participants will discuss and recreate headline stories and images at Southern Exposure, August 7 – 11, 2013, 1 – 3 pm.
Laser’s The Living Newspaper: Extra Extra is part of an ongoing project to performatively address the relationship between the news media and the public. By re-enacting news stories, she invites the audience to evaluate their consumption of current events.
This project is made possible by a generous grant from The Graue Family Foundation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Liz Magic Laser lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She is a graduate of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and Columbia University’s MFA program. In 2013 Laser had solo exhibitions at DiverseWorks in Houston, Texas, and the Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster, Germany, for which she received the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation Grant; and was selected as the Armory Show 2013 Commissioned Artist. Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including Lisson Gallery, London (2013); Mälmo Konsthall, Mälmo, Sweden (2012); the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2012); Various Small Fires, Los Angeles (2012); The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2012); the Performa 11 Biennial, New York (2011); The Pace Gallery, New York (2011); MoMA PS 1, New York (2010); Artisterium, Tbilisi, Georgia (2009); and the Prague Biennale 4, Czech Republic (2009). She was a resident at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation Space Program, New York (2012), Forever & Today, Inc.'s Studio On The Street artist-in- residence program, New York (2012), Smack Mellon, Brooklyn (2011) and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, New York (2009). Laser is the recipient of grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (2012), the Times Square Alliance and the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art (2010). Liz Magic Laser is her real name from birth.
ABOUT THE PERFORMERS Audrey Crabtree is an award-winning collaborative artist. Devising performance as an actor, director, writer, clown and bouffon, she creates for theater, festivals, galleries and found spaces. Her work in the theater has garnered a Drama Desk Award and a NY Innovative Theatre Award. She has worked on previous iterations of Living Newspaper, and collaborated with Liz Magic Laser in her performance I Feel Your Pain in 2010. Crabtree is co-founder of the company Ten Directions, the International NY Clown Theatre Festival, and NY Physical Comedy Lab, and has taught devising and performance in UK, India, Mexico and in universities across the United States.
Michael Wiener is a New York City based film and theater actor, performer and writer. He has appeared in films that have won awards and press acclaim at Sundance, Tribeca, Comic Con and internationally, as well as commercials including a celebrated drug awareness campaign directed by Darren Aronofsky. His recent television appearances include the Onion News Network, IFC. Wiener’s previous projects with Liz Magic Laser include a CNN commission for 2012 election season, an opening night film at the Armory Show and a MoMA PS1 residency. He is a vocalist/lyricist for The
2 Children... with collaborators Jim Coleman of Cop Shoot Cop and Phil Puleo of Swans. He recently published an autobiographical essay in Jews, A Peoples' History of New York, anthologized by Clayton Patterson and Dr. Mareleyn Schneider, and he curates a performing arts series at the Gershwin Hotel and Dixon Place.
ABOUT THE COSTUME DESIGNER Slow and Steady Wins the Race is a fashion and accessory line that reinterprets the everyday wardrobe by distilling fashion to its most indispensable and empirical elements. Built on the fundamentals of fashion vocabulary, the line both comments on and transcends the temporal nature of modern fashion. The line itself is a living archive: believing that good design is always relevant, all pieces from the collection remain available, from the earliest to the most current. Timeless and timely, unique and universal, democratic and cross-cultural, Slow and Steady Wins the Race is a conceptual commercial enterprise that seeks to elevate the classics to the iconic.
ABOUT THE GRAUE AWARD In 2009, The Graue Family Foundation invested in Southern Exposure’s growing public art initiative, SoEx Off-Site, through the creation of The Graue Award. The award offers an opportunity for local, national, and international artists to propose ideas leading to the development and presentation of an ambitious public art project in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2011, the Graue Award funded Manifest Destiny!, a SoEx Off-Site public project by Jenny Chapman and Mark A Reigelman II, on view in downtown San Francisco from November 2011 through October 2012.
ABOUT SOEX OFF-SITE Founded in 2006, SoEx Off-Site commissions and present temporary new work by visual artists that intervenes and interacts in the social and political spheres beyond the space of gallery. SoEx supports and encourages these practices as few venues support emerging artists working in the public realm, generating a critical dialog about emerging creative practices.
