Our Reviewing Officer Today is: Commander Brad Henderson, CD Commander – Regional Cadet Support Unit Pacific Commander Brad Henderson was born in Toronto Ontario in 1961 and enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1980. He attended Royal Roads Military College, graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. After graduation he completed his training in HMC Ships CHALEUR, QU’APPELE and KOOTENAY and in 1986 he volunteered for submarine service. He served in all three Canadian OBERON Class submarines and in 1989 started a three-year exchange posting to England where he was Navigating/Operations Officer of the commissioning crew of HMS UNSEEN, which is now HMCS VICTORIA. He was the first of only two Canadian Officers who served in the Upholder Class sailing under the Royal Navy flag. While in the UK he met his future wife Julia and was married in May 1992. Upon return to Canada in 1992, he served in HMCS ONONDAGA as Operations Officer and OKANAGAN as Executive Officer until fall 1997. Upon leaving submarine service, he completed the year long Operations Room Officer course in Halifax. He was then posted to HMCS PROTECTEUR where he served as the Combat Officer including a deployment to the conflict in East Timor in 1999/2000. In summer 2000 he was posted to HMCS WINNIPEG as Operations Officer where he achieved his Surface Command qualification. In early 2001, Lieutenant-Commander Henderson retired from the Royal Canadian Navy to take over as CEO of the North American division of an Executive Training company based in Toronto. While there, he joined the Naval Reserves at HMCS YORK assisting in officer development and training. In 2003 he returned to the west coast as a full-time Reservist as the Minor War Vessel Operations Officer of Sea Training Pacific, then Executive Officer of HMCS NANAIMO and EDMONTON, returned to Sea Training Pacific as Minor War Vessel OPSO in 2005. He was appointed as Commanding Officer of HMCS WHITEHORSE from June 2007 until June 2010. He was then appointed as the Deputy Commander Coastal Division of the Canadian Fleet Pacific until August 2012, when he became the Officer in Charge of Leadership and Recruit Training for a year. He took Command of HMCS YELLOWKNIFE in May 2013 for a year which included a successful counter-drug deployment to Guatemala and then took Command of HMCS EDMONTON in May 2014 followed a transfer to HMCS SASKATOON in November 2014. After completing the first MCDV deployment for OP NANOOK to the Arctic from the west coast in August and September of 2015 he was promoted to Commander and took over as the OIC Minor War Vessels of Sea Training Pacific. Commander Henderson component transferred back to the Regular Force Navy in April 2017 and was appointed as Commanding Officer of the Regional Cadet Support Unit Pacific. Commander Henderson and his wife Julia live in Maple Bay, British Columbia with their two children Rhianna and Michael. Also Joining Us: Chief Petty Officer 1st Class David Bliss Regional Cadet Support Unit Pacific – Regional CPO Chief Petty Officer 1st Class David Bliss, originally enrolled as a cadet in 1973 with the 1913 Ontario Regiment Cadet Corps in Oshawa Ontario. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in October 1977 and after initial trades training as a Naval Weapons Technician was posted to the West Coast. Throughout his career he sailed in HMC Ships, Terra Nova, Qu’Appelle, Restigouche, Algonquin, Regina and Winnipeg. CPO1 Bliss served as a Basic Recruit Instructor at CFRS Cornwallis NS, and was posted to NDHQ Ottawa on 3 separate occasions respectively as the LCMM Naval Weapons Systems, NW Tech Career Manager and RCN Strategic Readiness CPO. He operationally deployed with the Standing NATO Atlantic Fleet in 1991, United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia in 1992, Persian Gulf 1997, and Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 for anti-piracy patrols off Africa in 2009. He had the honour to be invested into the Order of Military Merit in November 1992 and be presented the Queens Diamond Jubilee medal in June 2012. Early January 2009, CPO Bliss was designated Coxswain of HMCS Winnipeg and in July of 2010 was appointed as the Pacific Fleet Chief Petty Officer. He completed his Regular Force career on June 5th 2014 retiring from the Royal Canadian Navy and enrolling as a member in the Cadet Organization Administration and Training Services (COATS) component of the Reserves In late June of 2014, CPO1 Bliss was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major of the Vernon Cadet Training Centre, where he served in that capacity until August of 2018. On December 6th 2018 CPO1 Bliss was appointed as the Pacific Regional Chief Petty Officer in Victoria BC.
