The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences.

This paper reports the recent developments in the applications of the freshwater rotifers {Brachionus calyciflorus), Artemia nauplii, decapsulatedArtemia cysts and on-grown Artemia in the freshwater ornamental fish culture. Results demonstrate that the rotifers are an ideal starter feed for dwarf gourami {Colisa lalia), a typical freshwater ornamental fish species with larvae that are too small to ingest Artemia nauplii or Moina at its first feeding. Compared with the conventional yolk food, the use of rotifers as a starter feed significantly improves the growth and survival of the gourami larvae (Days 2-12), and the beneficial effects are extended to the subsequent Artemia-feeding phase (Days 13-32). The freshwater rotifers and Artemia nauplii are also useful in raising Discus larvae in the absence of their parents, which would eliminate the risk of larvae being eaten by the parent fish.

  • Remarkable Morphological Variation in the Proboscis of Neorhadinorhynchus Nudus
1 Remarkable morphological variation in the proboscis of Neorhadinorhynchus nudus 2 (Harada, 1938) (Acanthocephala: Echinorhynchida) 3 Liang Li1,*, Matthew Thomas Wayland2, Hui-Xia Chen1, Yue Yang1 41Key Laboratory of Animal Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Hebei Province, 5College of Life Sciences, Hebei Normal University, 050024 Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, P. Whilst there is considerable variation in the size, 17shape, and armature of the proboscis across the phylum, intraspecific variation is generally 18 regarded to be minimal. Consequently, subtle differences in proboscis morphology are often 19used to delimit congeneric species. In this study, striking variability in proboscis morphology 20 was observed among individuals of Neorhadinorhynchus nudus (Harada, 1938) collected from 21 the frigate tuna Auxis thazard Lacépède (Perciformes: Scombridae) in the South China Sea. 22 Based on the length of the proboscis, and number of hooks per longitudinal row, these 23specimens of N. nudus were readily grouped into three distinct morphotypes, which might be 24considered separate taxa under the morphospecies concept. However, analysis of nuclear and 25 mitochondrial DNA sequences revealed a level of nucleotide divergence typical of an 26 intraspecific comparison. Moreover, the three morphotypes do not represent three separate 27 genetic lineages.

  • Description of a New Stromateoid Fish from the Miocene of St. Eugčne
Description of a new stromateoid fish from the Miocene of St. Eugène, Algeria GIORGIO CARNEVALE and ALEXANDRE F. BANNIKOV Carnevale, G. and Bannikov, A.F. 2006. Description of a new stromateoid fish from the Miocene of St. Eugène, Algeria. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 51 (3): 489–497. A single specimen of the axial skeleton of an elongate fossil stromateoid fish, collected from the Upper Miocene (Messinian) St. Eugène locality of north−western Algeria, is identified as a new species Ariomma geslini sp. nov. of the family Ariommatidae. It is based on a unique combination of features, including morphology and arrangement of pleural ribs, structure and orientation of anterior portion of the anal fin, unique sequential arrangement of anal−fin pterygiophores in relation to the haemal spines, and presence of large cycloid scales and meristics. The morphology and orientation of the first anal−fin pterygiophore indicate that A. geslini sp. nov. is probably related to the amphi−Atlantic species A. bondi and A. melanum. The analysis of the fossil record of the Stromateoidei suggests that the ariommatids were already in existence at least as early as the Eocene.
