Un dominio de Internet es una red de identificación asociada a un grupo de disposi tivos o equipos conectados a la red Internet. El propósito principal de los nombres de dominio en Internet y del sistema de nomb res de dominio (DNS), es traducir las direcciones IP de cada nodo activo en la r ed, a términos memorizables y fáciles de encontrar. Esta abstracción hace posible que cualquier servicio (de red) pueda moverse de un lugar geográfico a otro en la red Internet, aún cuando el cambio implique que tendrá una dirección IP diferente.1 Sin la ayuda del sistema de nombres de dominio, los usuarios de Internet tendrían que acceder a cada servicio web utilizando la dirección IP del modo (por ejemplo, sería necesario utilizar http://192.0.32.10 en vez de http://example.com). Además, r educiría el número de webs posibles, ya que actualmente es habitual que una misma di rección IP sea compartida por varios dominios. Dominios de nivel superior[editar] Cuando se creó el Sistema de Nombres de Dominio en los años 1980, el espacio de nomb res se dividió en dos grupos. El primero incluye los dominios territoriales, basad os en los dos caracteres de identificación de cada territorio de acuerdo a las abr eviaciones del ISO-3166 (ej. *.do, *.mx), denominados ccTLD (country code top le vel domain o «dominio de nivel superior geográfico»). El segundo grupo incluye dominio s de nivel superior genéricos (gTLD), que representan una serie de nombres y multi organizaciones. Inicialmente, estos dominios fueron: COM, NET, ORG, EDU, GOB y M IL, a los que posteriormente se unieron otros. -

From 1991 until 1996, the state and civil society signed a series of Peace Accords that promised to better meet the needs of the Maya, Xinka, Garífuna and non-Indigenous groups living there. In this context, how does the current educational system meet the varied needs of these groups? My research investigates the philosophy and praxis of Maya Indigenous knowledge (MIK) in broadly defined educational contexts through the stories of 17 diverse Maya professional women and men involved in educational reform that currently live and work in Guatemala City. How do they reclaim and apply their ancestral knowledge daily? What possible applications of MIK can transform society? The findings reveal that MIK promotes social change and healing within and outside institutionalized educational spaces and argues that academia needs to make room for Indigenous theorizing mainly in areas of education, gender, knowledge production, and nation building. I analyze these areas from anticolonial and critical Indigenous standpoints from which gender and Indigenous identities weave through the text. -

BACHMEIER Policy Brief Series EDUCATION & CHILDHOOD A portrait of U.S. children of Central American origins and their educational opportunity BRYANT JENSEN,a JAMES D. BACHMEIERb SUMMARY Educational opportunity—access to high quality schooling—is a critical aspect of social mobility and integration in the United States. This policy brief provides a demographic portrait of children with Central American heritage, with a focus on educational opportunity. We describe educational outcomes as well as some institutional conditions and family circumstances associated with opportunity. Nearly 1.7 million children (ages 0 - 17) of Central American origin lived in the U.S. in 2011. Guatemalan, Salvadoran, and Honduran origins are the most prevalent. Central American families settle throughout the U.S., though California, Texas, and Florida are the most common destination states. Most children of Central American origins (86%) were born in the United States, and most (82%) live in immigrant households (those with one or more foreign-born parents). Among their Latino peers, children of Central American origins (40%) are the most likely to have an undocumented parent. Having an undocumented parent is associated with weaker educational opportunity—e.g., lower parent education, higher poverty, and lower rates of health insurance coverage. Overall, children of Salvadoran, Guatemalan, and Honduran origin have weaker educational opportunity than their peers from the rest of Central America. These differences are associated with pre-existing social inequalities within migrant-sending communities, the selectivity of migrants versus non-migrants in their countries of origin, and structural inequalities in the U.S. -

Each year, Guatemala conducts two ethno-racially distinct pageants – one indigenous, the other ladina. The indigenous pageant prides itself on the authentic display of indigenous culture and physiognomies. On the contrary, during the westernized ladina pageant, contestants strive to adhere to western beauty ideals beauty and cultural norms engendered by discourses of whiteness. However, when the winner advances to the Miss World Pageant, they misappropriate elements of Mayan culture to express an authentic national identity in a way that is digestible to an international audience. En el lugar llamado El Pinar, Pedro de Alvarado se vio enfrentado por un gran ejercito k'iche' encabezado por Tecum Umam. Allí tuvo lugar el legendario duelo entre los dos capitanes, en el cual pereció el capitán k'i- che'. Por el amplio simbolismo mítico alrededor del enfrentamiento y por la falta de información en las car- tas de Alvarado, los historiadores contemporáneos han puesto en duda la historicidad del personaje de Tecum Umam. Sin embargo, en sus análisis apenas toman en cuenta las ricas fuentes de los documentos indígenas. En particular, un texto k'iche' llamado Título K'oyoi, escrito por un testigo de la batalla, contiene un pasaje muy detallado del enfrentamiento. Aquí vamos examinar este documento y a partir de ello deci- dir si el héroe nacional Tecum Umam era un guerrero ficticio, o más bien un personaje de carne y hueso. La Carta de Alvarado Empezamos con la carta de Alvarado dirigida a su superior Hernán Cortés. Es el documento más contem- poráneo al acontecimiento que tenemos. Fue escrito unas nueve semanas después del enfrentamiento con el capitán k’iche’ (11/4/1524). El domingo 20 de febrero de 1524,1 el ejercito español con sus tropas auxi- liares sale del pueblo de Xetulul o San Martín Zapotitlán y empieza a subir por el estrecho paso hacia Quetzaltenango, territorio k’iche’, todavía hoy una de los rutas más importantes de la costa pacífica hacia el altiplano, en estos días conocida como Palajunoj. -

Comunicaciones del Congreso Internacional de Vexilología XXI Vexilobaires 2005 CAUDILLOS, COUPS, CONSTITUTIONS AND CHANGES: AN ANALYSIS OF FLAG CHANGES IN LATIN AMERICA Ralph Kelly Abstract: The paper provides a review of historical changes in the design of national flags in Latin America since independence. Despite the perception that their national flags do not change, a number of Latin American countries have changed the design of their national flag since independence, either in minor ways or by adopting a completely new design. Some countries have experienced frequent flag changes in the past and only two Latin American national flags have never changed since independence. The paper undertakes a statistical analysis of the pattern of such changes and their reasons, which can be categorised into eight factors. The paper seeks to explain the past changes of the national flags of Latin America in the context of the unique history of the continent. Many flag changes in the past have been associated with changes of government, but in the past century the national flag is a more significant symbol than contemporary governments. The paper assumes an existing general knowledge of the designs and meaning of Latin American flags. Illustrations include reproductions from some of the major historical flag books of the Nineteenth Century and new re-constructions by the author.
