News from the Mayor for February 2018

We have had a couple water main breaks so far this winter due in part by the extreme temperature changes. One was on the corner of Avenue and Lanigan Street in front of the United Church. The other water main disrup- tion was a hole in the pipe down on Railway Avenue, but that one was more so due to the line being so old and in poor condition. Aside from that, it has been a struggle to keep up with the sanding as when we get the warmer temperatures it melts, then adds a layer of water that freezes over night giving the streets a nice fresh sheet of curling ice that requires sanding all over again. I do not think we are done with that yet this year so be extra careful when leaving your homes as walking can be very treacherous.

We have set the dates for nominations and an election to replace one vacant council seat previously held by Nelson Fritz. Look for further details later in this newsletter.

Julie Brooks is giving us a helping hand by accepting the role of our acting Ad- ministrator. We are hopeful to have the Administrator position filled this month so that Julie can continue with her well deserved retirement. We greatly appreciate the support she is giving us.

News from the Mayor I want to give a special shout out to our Fire Department and other first re- sponders. I got a letter from the Mayor of extending their thanks for our guys going to Kindersley to help with a fire at Guppy’s Carwash. Aside from that, all of our emergency responders often times are on callouts in frigid tem- peratures and very dangerous conditions. I hear nothing but praise for our emergency responders when I go to meetings in surrounding municipalities. They are quick to point out how professional they all are and what an outstand- ing job they do. Keep up the great work !!!

I had the honor of presenting Esmond Allcock with a day in his honor ( January 26th ) which is his birthday, but will also be known in the Town of Kerrobert as Esmond Allcock day from now on in recognition of him being ’s Oldest Man. Thank you to Joanne Schell for letting me know that Esmond did indeed hold that distinction. 108 years young and with over 17 million men in Canada to be at the very top of the list... Simply Amazing !

I want to share a little story of that day. Esmond was so humble and taking the day in stride. When his granddaughter Jamie Frydenlund was taking Esmond back to his room, a nurse came up and said “congratulations on being Canada’s oldest man” to which Esmond without hesitation responded, “ somebody had to do it”.

Talk to you in March.

Mayor Wayne Mock

Kerrobert Swimming Pool 326 Manitoba Ave History of the Kerrobert Pool The Town of Kerrobert has made swimming a priority for this community for many years. The History book states that the first pool was built around 1931. In 1946, the Kinsmen Club undertook looking after the tennis court and to start the levelling of the “school block” with a view towards the building the swimming pool. In 1947 fundrais- ing was started to build the pool but when the old rink burnt down the savings were put into the new rink. In 1955 a motion was passed to get started immediately on building a new swimming pool and changerooms. In 1961, the pool was opened. In July of 1980 the pool was closed for one year for a complete renovation. Town Council in- vested over $100,000 to this project. Most of the work was done by local and district contrac- tors hired by the town but a great deal was done voluntarily by the Kinsmen who did all of the demolition work, the fencing and the concrete bottom of the paddling pool. In 2003 an energetic local group of community members saw that improvements were greatly needed at the Kerrobert Swimming Pool and they began a major overhaul which included new piping, boilers, and many other major im- provements. In 2004 a Paddling Pool rebuilt was completed along with several new water toys. Since 2004 many minor repairs and equipment replacements have continued.

Please note : if you notice a mistake regarding the pool history, please contact the Rec Office

Kerrobert Swimming Pool 326 Manitoba Ave

Need for Upgrades In 2017, we saw a decrease of swimming hours which were due to maintenance issues, most of which included problems with the boilers on both pools. It was determined in the fall of 2017 that both of the boilers were in great need of repair and would not run another season. Along with the urgent need for boilers, other areas are in need of repair. Following the replacement of the boilers, we will need to repair and rebuilt the Boiler Room walls, the acid storage room, and some electrical wiring which has deteriorated due to the use of pool chemicals; we are in need of a major pump that failed at the end of the 2017 season; we are looking to improve on some areas of safety which include a cement path to transport chemicals, lock replacement on doors, and fencing to separate this chemical storage area from the public. We have been working diligently on gathering quotes and estimating costs for the repairs we wish to accomplish this spring. We currently anticipate those costs to be in the area of $110,000. We are currently applying for various grants to assist with this project. Many thanks to the generosity of busi- nesses, organizations and individuals who have offered financial assistance! We have currently raised $13,000. We intend to continue with improvements to our swimming pool and see the next major project to be replacement of the aging changerooms which were built in 1961.

Kerrobert Kinettes & Kinsmen Kinsmen Foundation The Kinsmen Foundation , provides special needs equipment and access to medical assistance to Saskatchewan residents, groups, & health foundations to improve quality of life and independ- ence. For individuals, innovations like ceiling track systems, portable lifts & ramps, funded by the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation, are making it possible for people to live at home and still re- ceive the care they need. With equipment like specialized wheelchairs, electric scooters, vehicle conversions & communication devices, people are achieving a level of independence they didn’t think possible. When people cannot access the level of care they need at home, they must often travel to health care facilities in other parts of the province or country. And while the medical procedures may be covered by health care, the patients and their families must pay for their own travel, meals, & accommodations. By easing the financial strain, the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foun- dation allows families to focus on what only they can provide – Love & Care. Funding groups that directly work with people with special needs is also an important focus for the Kinsmen Foundation. Across our province, loving care homes have been established with a family atmosphere to provide comfort & care to people with special needs. Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation provides funding for things like specialized tubs, lifts, specialty beds, & personal care equipment to make those homes even better suited to provide quality care. A third area of Kinsmen Foundation funding is focused on institutions and health foundations to purchase specialized, new, or innovative equipment to improve health care. Over the years, donations of this type have been provided in every corner of the province. When the Kinsmen Foundation was established in 1971, it granted funds raised by local Kins- men & Kinnette clubs. It was soon recognized that the requests for assistance far exceed the available funds. To meet the need, planning started in 1976 for a province- wide telethon, a ma- jor fundraiser, thus began Telemiracle in Feb. 1977. After the dust settles from the Telemiracle weekend , all donations are turned over to the Kinsmen Foundation Board of Directors, who disperse the funds. Gifts are given to Saskatchewan people who are in line with our 3 funding priorities – and so our cycle, and commitment to helping people every day, continues. If you or someone you know is in need of such assistance, please contact the Kinsmen Telemira- cle Foundation (info below) or feel free to contact a local Kinsmen member to help with the ini- tial sign up process.
