Fair Trade In collaboration with local artisan partners, we create one of a kind, handcrafted fair trade products including bags, accessories and housewares. The equipment needed is light and extremely portable and the apparatus can be set up almost anywhere. This is essential because most artisans balance many duties including raising children, maintaining the home, and earning a living through weaving. Standard liso textiles woven by our artisans partners are approximately 16.5W x 90L and ikat textiles are 16.5W x 75L. TECHNIQUES: Maya Traditions textiles are produced on a backstrap loom, and therefore cannot be made by the yard. Due to the constraints of these small looms, most textiles measure between 16.5’’ and 23’’ wide. These are re- ferred to as Lienzos (canvas in English). Liso Liso, which means smooth in Spanish, refers to a textile without bro- cade, ikat dying, or embroidery. The liso technique can be used to create pattern and color variations by using mezclia threads (2 single threads of different colors combined to create marbling) or employing the maya technique – which creates horizontal dashes through manipulation of the weft. Randas Randas are a traditional method used to overcome the relatively nar- row width of backstrap woven textiles. Randas use an embroidery thread to stitch two or more lienzos together to increase the width of the final piece. Both functional and decorative, randas add a special touch to any textile. 3 +502 7762 2829 [email protected] traditional backstrap weaving Ikat with Natural Dyes These designs are created using specially-dyed, two tone threads. The artisans begin the process by tying knots onto warped threads, which are then plunged into natural dye baths. When the threads have been dyed and dried, the knots are removed revealing the designs, then the threads can be woven into a textile. Artisans use locally sourced plants and insects to create dye baths that they apply to cotton or rayon threads. They use a banana tree trunk solution to fix the color and help stabilize the dye, ensuring the color will never run. Brocade Brocade is similar to embroidery but it takes place as the weaving is being created. Artisans meticulously integrate thread with each pass of the weft, creating a slightly raised design on the surface of the fabric. Petatillo An enhanced loom is used to isolate certain threads and when woven, create textured, box-like designs that resemble brocade. Cruzetas A technique which creates a lighter textile, generally made with rayon thread, resulting in a smooth, soft fabric perfect for scarves. Cruzetas add textural interest and are created on an enhanced backstrap loom with open weave elements.
