Un gruppo di escursionisti che si trovava a Briga Alta, sulle Alpi Marittime al confine tra le provincie italiane di Cuneo e Imperia e quella francese del Roya, è stato sorpreso da un violento temporale. Uno di loro è morto, folgorato da un fulmine. Gli altri sono stati soccorsi dagli elicotteri del 118 di Torino e Cuneo. La vittima è Alessandro Cortopassi, un ingegnere di 29 anni. Era il direttore della gita. Il suo corpo è stato ricomposto al cimitero di Garessio. L'incidente si è verificato in regione Ballaur, sotto la Cima delle Saline, a una quota di circa 1700-1800 metri. Ci sono anche sette escursionisti feriti. Due sono stati portati all'ospedale di Cuneo per contusioni non gravi, altri cinque si trovano invece all'ospedale di Mondovì: hanno avvertito il fulmine e sono stati sottoposti ad alcuni accertamenti cardiologici. E' stato rintracciato uno degli escursionisti, in un primo momento dato per disperso: si era rifugiato in una baita privata per sfuggire al maltempo.     225 Book Reviews 1982 Compiled by Geoffrey Templeman DAL CAUCASO AL HIMALAYA. VITTORIO SELLA (Club Alpino Italiano/Touring Club Italiano, 1982, pp 239, profusely illustrated, 300 x 220mm, npq.) This magnificent volume has been graciously presented to the Club by Dr Ludovico Sella and inscribed'A souvenir of Vittorio Sella's long association with British mountaineering'. The definitive biography in English of Sella was written by our member, Ronald Clark, and published in 1948 under the title The Splendid Hills. It was reviewed at length in AJ L VII. In 1981, nearly 40 years after Sella's death, a much more detailed work has been produced under the aegis of the Italian Alpine Club and the Touring Club. This is stated to be the first comprehensive account'at least in Italy' of the great man and his work. This is certainly true of the text with its detailed history of the Sella family, and records of Sella's extensive Alpine travels in his earlier years, particularly his great winter ascents of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa. The large illustrations, for the most part, as the title of the book suggests, are related to his travels beyond Europe, and thus his Alpine and Dolomite photographs are not as fully represented as in Clark's book. In 1879, after the premature death of his father, Vittorio was 'bought out' of the cavalry regiment in which he was serving, in order to train for his future responsibilities in the prosperous textile mills owned by the family. His father had been a keen photographer, and Vittorio acquired his large camera, and other equipment.

    THE CLIMB INTERVIEW Lucia Prosino talks to CHRISTOPHE DUMAREST France is renowned as a country of exceptional climbers and outstanding mountaineers. Christophe Dumarest is no exception. Behind this highly skilled athlete, however, lies an inventive and attentive person, always ready to crack a joke and eager to share his experiences with others. He’s climbed extensively in the Greater Ranges and opened many new routes in the Alps, such as Tifenn (V6 A1 M8+, 1100 m) on the Aiguille Sans Nom, Destruction Massive (M7/IV, 400m) on the north face of the Tournier Spur on the Droites, and Jean-Chri (7a+, A1, 800 m) on the, Hidden Pillar of Freney. He’s also repeated some of the famous hard modern classics in the range, such as the Lesueur Route (ED3, M8+, 900 m) on the north face of the Dru, and the Gousseault/Desmaison (M7+, 1100m) route with a direct variation. But he prefers to spend his time devising his next enchainments, with a keen eye on the aesthetics of the mountain range in question, and the historical aspects of the routes he chooses to link up. Lucia Prosino recently spoke to Christophe about his life and climbs, the role of ethics in the sport, and the enduring respect he has for British climbers and mountaineers.
