PRESERVING AMERICA'S MUSICAL PAST In summer of 2017, WJCT launched Hotsy Totsy, a new radio program featuring music from the 1920s and 1930s. WJCT Music Director David Luckin hosted the program, which featured classic songs from the earliest days of recorded American music, played from original 78 rpm records. Luckin knew he wanted to play all of these songs on original 78 rpm records to preserve the music’s old- time sound. In addition to hundreds of records from his own collection, Luckin put out a call for donations. Max Royle, a resident of St. Augustine, Florida, responded to the call — he donated 800 78s in mint condition. Also instrumental to the process was WJCT Engineer Alan Rhodes, who cleaned each record by handwashing both sides with soap and water, and then gave the records to Luckin to digitize. “We’re preserving American music history and sharing it with the community,” Luckin said, “one 78 at a time.”
