Developing Leaders to Strengthen Our Community 2013-2014 YEARBOOK Letter from the Executive Director Dear Leadership Jacksonville alumni and friends, A variety of local bridges dominate the cover of this 2013-14 Yearbook. Just as bridges transition us from one side of the mighty St. Johns River to the other, our incredible volunteers and talented staff are transitioning Leadership Jacksonville (LJ) from the successful 12 years of Izzy Spence’s leadership to the term of a new leader. Just as the bridges tie together varied landscapes, our alumni move throughout a diverse community, utilizing their own disparate backgrounds and talents but united by their desire to use their roles as community trustees for the greater good of our community. Like all LJ yearbooks, this year’s book bridges our programs. Additions are New Leadership Summit participants, our Legacy Series, Celebration Honorees, youth scholarship winners, and a list of all LJ volunteers. You will be impressed by the caliber of our program participants and stunned by the number of volunteers who commit to stimulating the growth of leadership in our community. The success of our programs is dependent on the support that we receive from our alumni and the greater community. You annually give your financial support through dues and contributions and, of equal importance, your time through board, committee and program day support, nominating new class members, and mentioning us throughout the community. Thank you for continuing to build and strengthen the bridges that make LJ an ever-stronger organization. Together we are Developing Leaders to Strengthen our Community. It is impossible to quantify the impact that 1996 Carlton Jones Leadership Jacksonville has had on Northeast Florida but we know that the majority 1997 Carol Spalding of our graduates remain in this area, using their talents and abilities to make this 1998 Joanne Sawyer* a wonderful place to live. Because of their Leadership Jacksonville experience, our 1999 H. Wade Barnes, M.D. graduates share a common recognition of the importance to serve as community 2000 Peggy Bryan trustees. 2001 Barbara Darby This yearbook is the first to include our Jacksonville Legacy Series. Our first three 2002 David Robertson videos have been aired and two more in the series are under production. The videos 2003 Barbara J. Bishop III We will continue to focus on engaging our alumni – you experienced our programs 2010 Stephen Canty and know how they have benefited you. We intend to build ever-stronger connections 2011 Nancy Kilgo with key stakeholders. Another continuing objective is to maintain a strong 2012 Jerry Mallot development effort to insure that we have the finances to provide quality programs that 2013 Justin Terry build community trustees, regardless of ability to pay. With your continued support Leadership Jacksonville can continue to strengthen the present and future leadership of Northeast Florida. *Deceased LEADERSHIP JACKSONVILLE 1 DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARD Celebration of Leadership Alumni Honorees 1996 Leadership Jacksonville 20th Anniversary 1989 Bruce Doueck Honorable John Delaney and Honorable Nat Glover 1990 Scott Skjordahl and Bill Etheredge 1997 Jane Condon, Gertrude Peele*, Honorable Frederick H.
