Developing Leaders to Strengthen Our Community

2013-2014 YEARBOOK Letter from the Executive Director Dear Leadership Jacksonville alumni and friends, A variety of local bridges dominate the cover of this 2013-14 Yearbook. Just as bridges transition us from one side of the mighty St. Johns River to the other, our incredible volunteers and talented staff are transitioning Leadership Jacksonville (LJ) from the successful 12 years of Izzy Spence’s leadership to the term of a new leader. Just as the bridges tie together varied landscapes, our alumni move throughout a diverse community, utilizing their own disparate backgrounds and talents but united by their desire to use their roles as community trustees for the greater good of our community. Like all LJ yearbooks, this year’s book bridges our programs. Additions are New Leadership Summit participants, our Legacy Series, Celebration Honorees, youth scholarship winners, and a list of all LJ volunteers. You will be impressed by the caliber of our program participants and stunned by the number of volunteers who commit to stimulating the growth of leadership in our community. The success of our programs is dependent on the support that we receive from our alumni and the greater community. You annually give your financial support through dues and contributions and, of equal importance, your time through board, committee and program day support, nominating new class members, and mentioning us throughout the community. Thank you for continuing to build and strengthen the bridges that make LJ an ever-stronger organization. Together we are Developing Leaders to Strengthen our Community.

29 Celebration 2013 Celebration is Leadership Jacksonville’s annual fundraiser held to raise money for the youth programs – Youth Leadership Jacksonville and the Collegiate Leadership Experience. It is also a time to honor those who have served our community as outstanding leaders. All three Celebration 2013 honorees exemplify Leadership Jacksonville’s mission of developing leaders to assume greater responsibility as community trustees who improve the quality of life for self, family and community. Gary Chartrand Deborah Gianoulis John Peyton Heald Gary Chartrand is the executive chairman of Acosta, a leading full-service sales and marketing agency. Gary has served on the board of directors for the Chartrand Foundation, Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Fresh Ministries, the Jacksonville Public Education Fund and KIPP Jacksonville Schools. Gary was appointed to the State Board of Education by Governor Rick Scott in 2011 and currently serves as chair.

Deborah Gianoulis Heald is the president and CEO of the Schultz Center for Teaching and Leadership. Deborah is best known for her 25 years anchoring the news at WJXT, Channel 4. In both roles she has worked tirelessly for public education in Northeast Florida, including acting as chairwoman for Save Duval Schools and previously serving on the Schultz Center board of directors.

John Peyton was named president of GATE Petroleum Company after serving two consecutive terms as mayor of Jacksonville. During his tenure as mayor, he hosted the city’s first Super Bowl; implemented initiatives to advance early literacy, reduce crime and improve the health of the St. Johns River; and worked hand-in-hand with the city’s economic development arm and JAX Chamber to cultivate both domestic and international business. Before his election as mayor, John served as board chairman for the Jacksonville Transportation Authority, chairman of the board of directors for the Orchestra and Greenscape of Jacksonville.
