During the first decade of his career, he released five albums that peaked at the top 20 on the Billboard 200, as well as 15 solo singles that hit the top ten on the Hot R'B/Hip-Hop chart. During this time, he was one of the few artists of the RCB to maintain the basic status. He collaborated with R. Kelly's chief inspiration, was in demand for A-list RKB and rap artists such as Scarface, Bun B, Mary J. Blige, Tony Braxton, and Diddy, and was nominated for several Grammy Awards. While growing up, Tremayne Aldon Neverson loved hip-hop, but the only R.B.A. he could get into was R. Kelly. When his friends heard his perfect tenor voice, however, they pushed him to give up rap and start crooning. Trey did just that, and after winning numerous talent shows in his native St. Petersburg, Virginia, the 15-year-old singer met Esa Troy Taylor, who worked behind the scenes with artists such as Patti LaBelle, SWV, and B2K. Taylor encouraged Trey to finish school first, and then they could talk about a possible music career. Trey graduated and immediately moved to New Jersey to work with Taylor. The singer soon appeared on Kevin Little's debut album And Trick Daddy's Thug Matrimony as a sideman, as well as self-referenced About the Game, a solo cutout from the Coach Carter soundtrack. Working on his debut album, not to mention several collaborations with Lil' Kim, Trina and Snoop Dogg, Trey Songz released several street-level mixtapes under the pseudonym Prince of Virginia. His own debut, performed and promising I Gotta Make It, was released by Atlantic in July 2005. Featuring an introduction from Aretha Franklin and productions from Taylor, Organized by Noize, and Warrin Campbell, it debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200. Subsequent Trey Day, released in October 2007, raised his profile. He debuted at number 11 and boasted collaborations with R. Kelly, Tributes, Star Wars, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, among others. His Can't Help Wait was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Best Category Vocal performance of the RCB. Four singles from Top Ten R.I.P./Hip-Hop helped make Ready, released in August 2009, his first album with a gold RIAA certification. Some of the album's songs, such as I Invented Sex and the platinum-based Say Aah, were among his most audacious material to this point, while his character and sense of flow were exceptional enough to reduce comparisons with R. Kelly and Usher. Seth was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Album for RBC. September 2010 brought Passion, Pain and Pleasure. Featuring Nicki Minaj's collaboration Bottoms Up, he too was RIAA certified. The five-set MINI album Inevitable was released in November 2011 as a temporary stop before the singer's fifth album, Chapter V. In August 2012, Chapter V debuted at number one and included poems from T.I., Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Mick Mill and Diddy. By this point, the songz's own guest performances - from Twist Girls to Tonit to J. Cole's Gold Can't Get Enough - could be made up for a significant anthology. In 2013, he contributed to another gold single, Juicy J's Bounce It, which appeared in the films Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3-D and Baggage Claim, and produced his sixth studio album. In early 2014, the hit Na Na as well as Smartphones were released as the first singles from June Trigga. The album debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. Several stop-crane releases followed until 2015, including Intermission I and II and the rebooted edition of Trigga, which eventually became the singer's third platinum album. Songz-Fabolous's unofficial EP, Trappy New Years, was independently released in late 2016. Tremaine followed in 2017 as Songz' seventh proper full length. The current pandemic has also affected all of us here at the ESO, and we understand full well the frustration of not being able to celebrate holidays with family or make music with friends or go holiday-shopping in a real store. We certainly miss performing for our loyal audiences, especially this month when we would have had our annual festive Holiday Concert Musical Notes and Activities for Seniors at ETHS with perennial favorites like “Sleigh Ride,” ballet selections from the Evanston Symphony Orchestra from The Nutcracker, the ESO Holiday Concert Gospel Choir led by the Reverend Ken Cherry - and maybe even tap-dancing reindeer! However, since we can’t invite you to an in-person concert this Holidays of Light! 2 year, we’ll present one to you in these pages and in links to videos and recordings that show off the orchestra and the music. An Evanston Symphony Holiday Concert 4 HighNotes always has articles on a specific musical theme plus a variety of puzzles and some really bad jokes and puns. This pop music has a purpose but it is not a singular purpose. This music might enhance the worship experience, provide a wholesome alternative to the unsavory choices provided by secular artists, infiltrate the mainstream culture with a positive message, raise the level of musicianship in the religious subculture or appeal to a religious audience despite origins in the secular world.
