Representatives of various disciplines includingchemistry, economics and social sciences cited many specific examples ofapplications of computingin their disciplines which were availableto be shared, expressed confidence that the technology which would permitsharing was also available and described a few cases in which sharingwas already taking place, The obstacles which most speakers foresawto widespread sharing of computer resources inalldisciplines were primarily organizational, politicaland economic. Over 250 persons attended the three-dayconference which was held atthe Chrysler Center for Continuing EngineeringEducation on the campus of the University of Michiganin Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Michigan Interuniversity Committeeon Information Systems (MICIS), which has sponsored the developmentof the MERIT network, actedas host for the meeting, The conference followedthe format developed in recent EDUCOM meetings of plenary sessionsalternating with small group discussions. The major speech atthe banquet heldin conjunction with the conference provided a change ofpace for conferees, Dr. Edwin H. Parker, Professor of Communications at StanfordUniversity, spoke on "Social Information: The Technology, The Needand the Challenge," He outlined his view of the possible and the probablefutures for cable television, especially as related to higher education andchallenged organizations like EDUCOM to help make possible the levelof expenditure which will be necessary to move our society to the kind of educationsystem which can be provided by means of cable television. Panel presentations and speeches -givenduring the conference have been edited by the speakers andare collected in the following pages. These presentationsare colleeted in the following pages: Peter Lyl-os outlines specificexamples of the use of networks inchemistry:a luge data batik with complex molecular structures.accessedbyremoteterminals,witha three- dimensionalimagecapability a collectionof programscarefully constructed for general use permitting quanium/chemicalcalculations from remote terminals backed up by lint phone counseling:and a small college remote job entry station with graphicsaugmentation accessing a large-scale computer. Walter Sedelow: discussing networkingactivitieF, related to languages and humanities. describes the Ce/NcoReLStady. He concentrates on some of the conclusions emerging from the exploration of a very wide range of types of language research which might be involved in networking. Some of the current independent networking effortswhich are underway to serve the approximately 40:000 professional economists in the United States are outlined by Sanford Berg. Most Of these activities are presently based in a variety of scientific societies: research institutes, tiovernment agencies and universities. Dr: Berg notes especially thc lack of coordinating mechanisms for the independent efforts. FrederickKilgour desciihes various online computer applications for libraries:MEDLINE. a remote subject retrieval system based at the National Library of Medicine; Basis-70 operated by the Battelle Memorial Institute: and internallibrary online applications for acquisitions, cataloging and circulationat the New England Library Information Network, Stanford University, TheOhio State University, and the Ohio College Library Center.
