  • Fish Fauna of River Ujh, an Important Tributary of the River Ravi, District Kathua, Jammu
Environment Conservation Journal 16 (1&2)81-86, 2015 ISSN 0972-3099 (Print) 2278-5124 (Online) Abstracted and Indexed Fish fauna of river Ujh, an important tributary of the river Ravi, District Kathua, Jammu V. Rathore and S. P. S. Dutta Received:16.03.2015 Accepted:18.05.2015 Abstract Fish survey of river Ujh, an important clean water tributary of the river Ravi, in Kathua district, has revealed the presence of 42 fish species belonging to 5 orders, 10 families and 27 genera. Fish fauna is dominated by Cypriniformes (27 species), followed by Siluriformes (10 species), Synbranchiformes (2 species), Perciformes (2 species) and Beloniformes (1 species). Fishing methods commonly employed include cast net, rod and hook, pocket net, poisoning, hand picking, stick, sickle and simple cloth. Fish diversity is fast depleting due to over exploitation, illegal fishing methods and fishing during breeding season. There are great prospects of increasing fish production in this river by stocking various carps in seasonal Ujh barrage at village Jasrota. Keywords: Fish fauna, river, fish diversity Introduction Riverine fish resources are fast depleting due to passes through narrow valley, deepens more and lack of fish resource information and over more to assume the character of gorge. Further exploitation. Sustainable exploitation of water bodies require detailed analysis of fish fauna down, at Panjtirthi, the valley widens and four inhabiting lotic waters and scientific streams viz. Bhini, Dangara, Sutar and Talin join management through regular monitoring and the Ujh. The Bhini is perennial and the remaining proper check on fishing pressure, including three streams are seasonal. It ultimately joins the unscientific fishing methods.

  • Primate Report 64 (2002).Pdf
Foreword Foreword The present issue of Primate Report, presenting selected mixed species exhibits in Zoos of Germany, comprises two parts: The first part represents a survey of primate mixed species exhibits in Zoos and Tierparks of Germany. It focuses on the association of primates with other pri- mate and/or mammal species under captive conditions, in order to evaluate the fea- sibility of mixing specific primate species in Zoo-exhibits, as well as the potential risks and benefits for the animals involved. Individual concepts of enclosure designs based on the requirements of the mixed species are presented along with the experi- ences made by zoo personnel, in establishing and maintaining these polyspecific as- sociations. Beside practical problems, technical demands for particular exhibits are also mentioned. In the second part of this issue, some selected mixed species exhibits without primates involved are presented. This selection is focused on polyspecific associa- tions of mammals which are rarely seen in captivity. By presenting these associa- tions, some valuable information on unusual exhibits is provided to further support the development of polyspecific associations in Zoos and to promote new ideas as al- ternative ways of optimising keeping conditions in general. The issue ends with final remarks on the overall experiences with mixed species exhibits made by zoo staff, including the public relation caused by such exhibits and the educational aspects for visitors. For further information on mixed species exhibits of mammals in Zoos world- wide, the study of Dr. Gabriele Hammer, titled "Gemeinschaftshaltung von Säuge- tieren in Zoos", also available on CD-ROM, is highly recommended (see: HAMMER, 2001).

Minnows and molecules: resolving the broad and fine-scale evolutionary patterns of Cypriniformes by Carla Cristina Stout A dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Auburn, Alabama May 7, 2017 Keywords: fish, phylogenomics, population genetics, Leuciscidae, sequence capture Approved by Jonathan W. Armbruster, Chair, Professor of Biological Sciences and Curator of Fishes Jason E. Bond, Professor and Department Chair of Biological Sciences Scott R. Santos, Professor of Biological Sciences Eric Peatman, Associate Professor of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences Abstract Cypriniformes (minnows, carps, loaches, and suckers) is the largest group of freshwater fishes in the world. Despite much attention, previous attempts to elucidate relationships using molecular and morphological characters have been incongruent. The goal of this dissertation is to provide robust support for relationships at various taxonomic levels within Cypriniformes. For the entire order, an anchored hybrid enrichment approach was used to resolve relationships. This resulted in a phylogeny that is largely congruent with previous multilocus phylogenies, but has much stronger support. For members of Leuciscidae, the relationships established using anchored hybrid enrichment were used to estimate divergence times in an attempt to make inferences about their biogeographic history. The predominant lineage of the leuciscids in North America were determined to have entered North America through Beringia ~37 million years ago while the ancestor of the Golden Shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas) entered ~20–6 million years ago, likely from Europe. Within Leuciscidae, the shiner clade represents genera with much historical taxonomic turbidity. Targeted sequence capture was used to establish relationships in order to inform taxonomic revisions for the clade.
