National Catholicism. This Was Considered by the Communists As an Oppositional Ideology and It Was Not Tolerated by the Regime After the Stalinization in 1948 Besprechungen ZfO JECES 66 ı 2017 ı 4 629 national Catholicism. This was considered by the communists as an oppositional ideology and it was not tolerated by the regime after the Stalinization in 1948. The main advocates of this ideology, Wiesław Chrzanowski, Andrzej Kozanecki and Tadeusz Przeciszewski, were sentenced to prison. The Marian Student Sodality (Sodalicja Mariańska Akademików), which was a group of young people seeking profound understanding of Catholicism, concentrated on develop- ing religious consciousness rather than engaging in polemics with the regime. The leaders of the Sodality, like father Tomasz Rostworowski, wanted to create a lay intellectual elite. However, after 1948 the communists persecuted its members and Rostworowski was sen- tenced to prison. Tygodnik Powszechny, a weekly published in Kraków, sought refuge in culture. This was also the choice of the distinguished Word Eaters Club (Klub Logofa- gów), which created a space where Catholics could discuss openly, even with Marxists. Maintaining its character was impossible under the Stalinist regime and the club was closed by its founders, probably at the end of 1948. All these groups shared a non-con- formist attitude towards the regime, which ultimately brought them under surveillance and persecution by the secret police. The other path was chosen by Bolesław Piasecki and his editorial team of Dziś i Jutro weekly, which later evolved into the PAX association. They sought agreement with the Polish communists and their Soviet overseers, which finally resulted in pledging loyalty to the Stalinist regime and supporting its policy. F. mainly bases his historical reconstruction on the documents created by the communist secret police. This sheds new light on the to- pic, especially on the history of Piasecki’s group, whose policy was well known to histori- ans, but had been based more on deduction and scarce papers rather than official docu- ments showing its dependence on the secret police. F. proves, without a doubt, that Piasecki and his associates (Ryszard Reiff, Konstanty Łubieński) secretly cooperated with the communist secret service in its operation against the Polish government in exile in London. Moreover, this led to his dependence on Julia Brystigier, the director of Department V of the Ministry of Public Security, who planned and coordinated actions against the Catholic Church in Poland. Therefore F.’s narration links how Piasecki’s proposal of political allegiance in 1945 evolved into collaboration with the communists in their policy to subdue the Catholic Church, which was not clear previously. The author’s narrative is very detailed. However, a certain amount of the information provided could be better inserted into footnotes. Besides, the documents are too often ex- tensively cited, cluttering the reader’s mind with details which sometimes are not linked to the narrative. However, these minor flaws do not overshadow the book’s great value. F.’s monograph is a solid foundation for further research on the history of the Catholic intelligentsia in Poland. It introduces new material and interpretations both on the post-war reality and the ideas and biographies of young Catholic intelligentsia. It shows the impor- tance of intellectual reflection in the age of totalitarianism, and how fragile the boundary between political game and treachery was. It is based on a broad spectrum of primary sources and its contents will be considered current for many years. Furthermore its index and photographs make finding information easier. Undoubtedly every historian working on the history of the Catholic Church and intelligentsia in communist Poland should be acquainted with it.

The author first discusses pre-1989 literature and then the most recent studies devoted to political Catholicism in Poland. In the main part of the article he presents three strands in historiography: research into the Labour Party, re- search into groups associated with Catholic socio-political weeklies, and biographies and syntheses of the history of the Catholics and the Church. Keywords: political Catholicism, Catholic Church in the Polish People’s Republic, Christian Democracy. Introduction The aim of the article is to carry out an overview of the most important tendencies in the historiography devoted to social and political activities of lay Catholics in 1945–48. This, I hope, will make it possible to provide an important addition to the existing overviews of the literature on the rela- 1 tions between the Church and the state. The scope of the problems tackled in the article are determined by the use of the term ‘political Catholicism’ * The article is a result of research conducted thanks to a National Science Centre grant, no.2016/23/N/HS3/00380.I would like to cordially thank my research supervi- sor, Paweł Skibiński from the Institute of History, University of Warsaw, members of the editorial board of Kwartalnik Historyczny as well as the anonymous reviewers for their valuable remarks and suggestions.

  • Catholic Church Towards Sovietization of Culture and Polish Society in Communication of the Polish Embassy at the Vatican in the Years 1956–1968
HISTORICKÁ SOCIOLOGIE 2/2020 Catholic Church Towards Sovietization of Culture and Polish Society in Communication of the Polish Embassy at the Vatican in the Years 1956–1968 MAREK BODZIANY* – TOMASZ LANDMANN** Katolická církev proti sovietizaci kultury a polské společnosti v komunikaci polského velvyslanectví ve Vatikánu v letech 1956–1968 Abstract: The article aims to present the culture-forming role of the Catholic Church, which emerges from selected communications of the Polish Embassy at the Vatican, in opposition to the sovietisation of Polish culture developed by the communist authorities of the People’s Republic of Poland in the years 1956–1968. Materials from the Archive of the Józef Piłsudski Institute in America and available literature constituted the basis for the analysis. The undertaken research considering the sources fills a significant gap in the knowledge about the Catholic Church’s oppo- sition to the process of sovietisation of Polish culture during the Cold War. It should be empha- sised that in the post-war period the Church was the institution that shaped Christian values and a kind of “bastion” of resistance to the authorities whose one of the goals was to sovietise Polish culture. It continued the discourse on the ground of the expression of the inability to reconcile the communist ideology with Christian values in European, including Polish, culture. It also acted as a correspondent for the affairs of oppressed nations subjected to the course of sovietisation. The undertaken research is an answer for lack of knowledge on the Catholic Church opposition towards the process of sovietising Polish culture during the Cold War.

  • Framing Solidarity. Feminist Patriots Opposing the Far Right in Contemporary Poland
Open Cultural Studies 2019; 3: 469-484 Research Article Jennifer Ramme* Framing Solidarity. Feminist Patriots Opposing the Far Right in Contemporary Poland https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2019-0040 Received October 30, 2018; accepted May 30, 2019 Abstract: Due to the attempts to restrict the abortion law in Poland in 2016, we could observe a new broad- based feminist movement emerge. This successful movement became known worldwide through the Black Protests and the massive Polish Women’s Strike that took place in October 2016. While this new movement is impressive in its scope and can be described as one of the most successful opposition movements to the ethno-nationalist right wing and fundamentalist Catholicism, it also deploys a patriotic rhetoric and makes use of national symbols and categories of belonging. Feminism and nationalism in Poland are usually described as in opposition, although that relationship is much more complex and changing. Over decades, a general shift towards right-wing nationalism in Poland has occurred, which, in various ways, has also affected feminist actors and (counter)discourses. It seems that patriotism is used to combat nationalism, which has proved to be a successful strategy. Taking the example of feminist mobilizations and movements in Poland, this paper discusses the (im)possible link between patriotism, nationalism and feminism in order to ask what it means for feminist politics and female solidarity when belonging is framed in different ways. Keywords: framing belonging; social movements; ethno-nationalism; embodied nationalism; public discourse A surprising response to extreme nationalism and religious fundamentalism in Poland appeared in the mass mobilization against a legislative initiative introducing a total ban on abortion in 2016, which culminated in a massive Women’s Strike in October the same year.

  • PAX and Socialist Realism a Marriage of Convenience
Daria Mazur PAX and Socialist Realism: A Marriage of Convenience? The term ‘socpaxist realism’1 defines works by authors associated with the milieu of Bolesław Piasecki2 in the years 1949-1956 (the so-called movement of socially progressive Catholics) and with the Dziś i Jutro} weekly that it published. The specificity of these works stemmed from the attempts at reconciliation of a religious world-view with full acceptance of the Stalinist course taken by the authorities. Socpaxist authors keenly tapped into the concept of Catholic realism.4 The pos tulate of describing the reality in its material and spiritual aspects was, however, 1 Socpaxist realism: a term describing a phenomenon specific to Polish literary life at the time of Stalinism consisting in the combination of the doctrine of socialist realism with the Catholic world-view. It is external to the discourse of the era and pejoratively loaded.
