CATHEDRAL of OUR LADY of the ANGELS Wednesday October 14, 2020 a Very Warm Welcome to Everyone— Especially to All Our Young Missionaries That Join Us Today Main Celebrant: Archbishop Jose Gomez Concelebrant: Monsignor Terrance Fleming CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS Wednesday October 14, 2020 A very warm welcome to everyone— especially to all our young missionaries that join us today. Although, we are not able to gather physically at the Cathedral today like we do every year, we know that you are all present in spirit here with us today. We are here to celebrate YOU and your missionary efforts to help other children in other parts of the world through your participation in the Missionary Childhood Association. As one of the pontifical mission societies MCA is present in more than 150 countries all over the world. All donations given to MCA are from children to help other children. MCA fosters children’s awareness of the missionary nature of the church who are part of Catholic Schools and Religious Education by making them aware of their call to mission as members of the church. You as MISSIONARIES have given your answer of “Here I am, send me!” to God’s question of “whom shall I send?” to help those in the peripheries of society, those who are suffering and those who like you deserve to live with dignity as the children of God. Page 1 ENTRANCE HYMN— We Belong To You We belong to you, O Lord of our longing, We belong to you. In our daily living, dying and rising We belong to you. In the waters of your mercy, When the old becomes the new, Souls united in the mystery: We belong to you. Filled with gifts and filled with goodness, Spirit breathing life into All who seek to find their purpose: We belong to you. FIRST READING 1 Corinthians 12: 31-13:13 (Proclaimed by Valeria Torres, Nativity School, El Monte) Bothers and sisters: Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts. But I shall show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, love is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not see its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will brough to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. For we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect come, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I use to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child, when I became men, I put aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. The word of the Lord: Thanks be to God RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 100: 1b-2, 3, 4, 5 Refrain: We are His People (Craig Colson, published OCP) GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (Sung) Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia Page 2 GOSPEL John 15: 12-17 Jesus said this to this disciples: “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, Because I have told you everything I have heard from the Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another. The gospel of the Lord Praise be to you Lord, Jesus Christ. HOMILY Monsignor Terrance Fleming PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL Spoken Response: Lord hear our prayer Intercessions offered by Vince Mahar, St. Dominic Savio School, Bellflower. PRESENTATION OF GIFTS: The Servant Song by Richard Gillard Brother, let me be your servant. Let me be as Christ to you. Pray that I might have the grace. To let you be my servant, too. We are pilgrims on a journey. We are brothers on the road. We are here to help each other. Walk the mile and bear the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you In the night time of you fear. I will hold my hand out for you; Speak the peace you long to hear. • Zacchaeus: a Lost Sheep, Not a Lynched Sinner
Zacchaeus: A Lost Sheep, not a Lynched Sinner... A reflection on Luke 19:1-10 by Eric DeBode Zacchaeus the Tax Collector 1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” In today's reading we have the story of Zacchaeus, which sums up many key themes from Luke’s gospel: the high are brought low, the lost sheep is gathered, justice happens outside of court by repairing harms done, the “child of Abraham” is welcomed back, and the outsider and unclean is recognized as key to the project of salvation.

A reading from Song of Songs (Pause) My lover speaks and says to me, “Arise, my friend, my beautiful one, and come! For see, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of pruning the vines has come, and the song of the turtledove is heard in our land. FR. KEVIN DILLON’S HOMILY DATED 26.07.2020 I just had an ideas and I shouldn’t announce ideas on YouTube because someone else will steal it but I thought maybe, maybe we should there’s still a lot of priests saying mass all over the world, may be should have masks in liturgical colours so I should have a green one now and a white one Christmas and Easter and a purple one for Advent and Lent and a red one for the Feast of the Martyrs and the Apostles. Now, don’t tell anyone I just had that idea but that might be a marketing opportunity for someone, so let’s see what happens with that. On another note – question for you, have a think, what is the most beautiful song ever written? Now that’s probably pretty hard because there’s lots of songs around. But if I was to make a list there’s one song that would definitely be on it and it was in my mind during the week because I received a card from a granddaughter of a lady whose funeral I conducted a couple of weeks back and when I had met with the family, they were searching around for music to put behind the photos. At that stage I think that we were still able to have 50 people at the funeral and anyhow, the song is one which I have suggested a few times for use at funerals in similar circumstances behind photos or special reflection and it is for me one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
