  • CATHEDRAL of OUR LADY of the ANGELS Wednesday October 14, 2020 a Very Warm Welcome to Everyone— Especially to All Our Young Missionaries That Join Us Today
Main Celebrant: Archbishop Jose Gomez Concelebrant: Monsignor Terrance Fleming CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS Wednesday October 14, 2020 A very warm welcome to everyone— especially to all our young missionaries that join us today. Although, we are not able to gather physically at the Cathedral today like we do every year, we know that you are all present in spirit here with us today. We are here to celebrate YOU and your missionary efforts to help other children in other parts of the world through your participation in the Missionary Childhood Association. As one of the pontifical mission societies MCA is present in more than 150 countries all over the world. All donations given to MCA are from children to help other children. MCA fosters children’s awareness of the missionary nature of the church who are part of Catholic Schools and Religious Education by making them aware of their call to mission as members of the church. You as MISSIONARIES have given your answer of “Here I am, send me!” to God’s question of “whom shall I send?” to help those in the peripheries of society, those who are suffering and those who like you deserve to live with dignity as the children of God. Page 1 ENTRANCE HYMN— We Belong To You We belong to you, O Lord of our longing, We belong to you. In our daily living, dying and rising We belong to you. In the waters of your mercy, When the old becomes the new, Souls united in the mystery: We belong to you.

  • Zacchaeus: a Lost Sheep, Not a Lynched Sinner
Zacchaeus: A Lost Sheep, not a Lynched Sinner... A reflection on Luke 19:1-10 by Eric DeBode Zacchaeus the Tax Collector 1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” In today's reading we have the story of Zacchaeus, which sums up many key themes from Luke’s gospel: the high are brought low, the lost sheep is gathered, justice happens outside of court by repairing harms done, the “child of Abraham” is welcomed back, and the outsider and unclean is recognized as key to the project of salvation.

Particularly during the era of newly independent Jamaica in the 1960s and 1970s, these complex lyrics reflected and forged a new society through media outlets such as the radio, dancehall parties, and deejay battles. The rise of reggae coincided with the construction of a new Jamaican society: reggae grew as a genre in Kingston’s urban shan- tytowns during the late 1960s, and the musical form responded to Jamaica’s independence from Great Britain in 1962. Reggae is influ- enced by other genres such as mento (a traditional Jamaican folk music that migrated with many from the country to the city), ska, rhythm and blues, and jazz.
