Ontario Species at Risk Evaluation Report for Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario (COSSARO) Assessed by COSSARO as Threatened June 2016 Final Renard gris (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) Le renard gris est au Canada depuis des siècles. On le croyait vagabond ou présent de façon isolée, mais ses populations ont migré des États-Unis vers le Nord du Canada, ce qui semble contribuer à son maintient. De récentes données indiquent que deux populations se reproduiraient au Canada, soit à l’île Pelée et dans le Nord-Ouest de l’Ontario (Thunder Bay – rivière à la Pluie), et quelques spécimens ont été observés dans certaines parties du Sud de l’Ontario. La taille de la population du renard gris en Ontario serait bien en deçà de 250 adultes, ce qui lui vaut son statut d’espèce menacée. Les données ne permettent pas de déterminer si la population est en baisse dans la province. Le renard gris est très vulnérable à la prédation des coyotes, particulièrement là où la population de ces derniers est importante. Les populations des États-Unis sont généralement saines et stables, voire en hausse, sauf en Ohio, où elles semblent décliner. L’espèce est visée par la chasse dans tous les États américains adjacents. Le renard gris répond aux critères du CDSEPO d’une espèce en voie de disparition – notamment la très petite taille de sa population (D1) –, mais il est tout de même considéré comme une espèce menacée vu la possibilité de l’incidence salvatrice des populations saines et stables des États américains adjacents. -

Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland Introduction There are 50 known species of land snail found in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) which represents about half of the 100 UK species. However molluscs are an under-recorded taxon group so it is possible that more species could be found and equally possible that a few may now be extinct in our two counties. There was a 20 year period of enthusiastic mollusc recording between 1967 and 1986, principally by museum staff, which account for the majority of species. Whilst records have increased again in the last three years thanks to NatureSpot, some species have not been recorded for over 30 years. All our land snails are in the class Gastropoda and the order Pulmonata. Whilst some of these species require damp habitats and are generally found near to aquatic habitats, they are all able to survive out of water. A number of species are largely restricted to calcareous habitats so are only found at a few sites. The sizes stated refer to the largest dimension of the shell typically found in adult specimens. There is much variation in many species and juveniles will of course be smaller. Note that the images are all greater than life size and not all the to the same scale. I have tried to display them at a sufficiently large scale so that the key features are visible. Always refer to the sizes given in the text. Status refers to abundance in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55). However molluscs are generally under- recorded so our understanding of their distribution could easily change. -

Many snails are decomposers. Decomposers consume dead or dying leaves, wood, and fungus. Without snails and other decomposers it would take much longer for nutrients to cycle through the environment: that is, move from living things to the soil, then back into living things again. Which snails and slugs are considered pests? Why? Pest snails are those that cause damage to human-grown plants and/or are so abundant that they cause damage to human-created landscapes. -

Spixiana 38 (1): 139- 143. Trindade is an oceanic island 1140 km off Vitória, Brazil. The Marion Dufresne Expedition (1987) recovered there many land snail shells, all stylommatophoran pulmonates. Here, four microgastropod species found in this material are re- corded for the first time on Trindade Island: Lilloiconcha gordurasensis (Charopidae), Pupisoma macneilli (Valloniidae), Gastrocopta barbadensis (Gastrocoptidae) and Ver- tigo sp. (Vertiginidae). The last one could be a non-native, introduced species. Unfortunately, none of these species can be currently found alive on the island, which can be indicative of extinction. BRANSON, Department of Blol011 Kansas state College, Pittsburg ADDENDA Since part four of this treatise (Branson, 1962) was sent to prell several changes have been made in the knowledge of Oklahoma gastropods which are concentrated and incorporated In this work. Branson, Taylor and Taylor (1962), in discussing a Pleistocene fauna from caddo and Canadian counties, reported Ferri88ia meekiana (Stimpson) 88 a tossll from Oklahoma. A few months later Dr. Lewis Peters (Northern Michigan College) found large numbers of living specimens in Lake Oberlin, Bryan County (Branson and Peters, in press). This species (Fig. 1 a, b) is easily distinguished from the other four ancylid snails known from Oklahoma In possessing a septate shell. Although the septum is sometimes lacking (Basch, 1959) the shell nearly always has a slight indentation on each side. A second ancylid change in the Oklahoma fauna Is of a legall8tlc nature. Basch (1962) has shown that Ferri88ia lusca, should be placed in the genus Laeva.pe~. Several additions and changes in the known land snail fauna also bave been made. Hubricht (1962) recently described HelicotUacus not.U8, includ ing Oklahoma in its range (no definite locality was given), but this appears to be a member of the somewhat variable H. para,lleZus-a. eigenmanni complex, which may be a single variable species. Th.. will be discussed in part six of this work. Branson and Peters (in preu) reported Limax 17WUimus Llnnaeus, a large exotic slug trom Europe, from Ottawa County, probably an escape from a Miami greenhouse. -
