Many of you asked for interviews with academic and support staff. So, in this year’s Bulletin we hear from Dr Naomi Appleton, Senior Lecturer in Asian Religions. In the last couple of years, some of our major developments have been in the area of Science and Religion, which include both degree programmes and a more recent academic animal called a ‘MOOC’! We also feature information on our scholarships, which are increasingly important as fees and living costs continue to rise. As you’ll see elsewhere in these pages, we are able to offer a significant number of scholarships each year. Thanks to the ongoing philanthropic support of our alumni and supporters we have been able to grow existing scholarship funds and establish new ones. -

Interdisciplinary Research HE Sector Day Speakers’ Biographies – in agenda order Please note that further information is to be added shortly. Professor Michael Wilmore (Executive Dean - Faculty of Media and Communication, Bournemouth University) Professor Michael Wilmore’s academic career spans more than twenty-five years, several disciplines, and positions both in the UK and Australia. He has held posts as Associate Dean (Learning Innovation) at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, and Associate Dean (Education) at the University of Adelaide, initially in the Department of Anthropology, but for the majority of time in the Department of Media, including more than three years as Head of Department. His experience in university leadership encompasses extensive work on curriculum development, information and communication technology projects, collaborations with industry and other education providers, as well as finance and workload management. He has been an active researcher on a number of projects funded through competitive research grants. Each has involved extensive interdisciplinary and industry collaborations, ranging from media organisations in Nepal to the antenatal department of a large hospital. His research interests primarily concern development and health communication, but he has also completed educational research and a project on fieldwork practices in archaeology, which was his first area of study as an undergraduate at the University of Exeter. 1 an Exploration of the Viability of Partnership Between Dar Al-Ulum
An exploration of the viability of partnership between dar al-ulum and Higher Education Institutions in North West England focusing upon pedagogy and relevance Final Report Ron Geaves, Liverpool Hope University Introduction and Background Religious education in faith schools has been subject of contestation for several decades and is arguably most acutely experienced in the Muslim faith school sector. The debates are framed within ongoing and continuous educational theorization of the role of religious education in the school curriculum; the role of faith schools and in the case of Muslim faith schools, political concerns over integration. Muslim faith schools were likely to find themselves at the forefront of government identification of schools ‘as a tool for tackling extremist opinion and ideology’ in the 2008 Prevent Strategy, whose primary focus was the prevention of militant Islamic terrorism.1 In the case of the Deobandi dar al-ulum (Muslim seminary),2 a sector with approximately thirty institutions in Britain, primarily concerned with delivering a seventeenth century religious curriculum formulated in India, known as the Dars-i Nizami,3 these debates become focused around relevance with regard to both pedagogical styles of delivery and the content of the curriculum. Although the project that provided the field research for this article was primarily concerned with the practical obstacles that might stand in the way of possible partnerships between the dar al-ulum and HE/FE sector institutions with regard to the accreditation of the final two years of the curriculum (post ‘A’ Level), it was able throw light on the concerns with regard to relevance and pedagogy. -

REVIEWS The Rhythm of Doctrine: A liturgical sketch of Christian faith and faithfulness John E. Colwell Paternoster, Milton Keynes, 2007; 135 pp; £12.99; ISBN-13: 9781842274989. The idea for this work came out of a conversation with a fellow theologian who posed the question, 'What structure would you follow if you were to ever write a Systematic Theology?' In response to this the author has produced a work that is constructed around the church calendar. Starting with Advent, he moves through the year with Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, and concludes with All Saints Day. There is value in such an approach, but, allowing for the 'big themes,' Lent and All Saints Day are of human manufacture, (some would argue that all are synthetic), and so his argument is weakened by their inclu sion. John Colwell is Tutor in Christian Doctrine and Ethics at Spurgeons' (Baptist) College, in South London. His churchmanship is therefore evi dent as he works through his thesis. So too is his own personal experi ence: he claims that his devotional life was deepened as he came through, 'the crushing darkness of clinical depression'. So also are his own theo logical prejudices: he speaks favourably, for example, of the enthusiasms of the Charismatic movement. The author has attempted to present a case for the Christian Church to be more systematic in its worship and preaching, particularly in respect to the Christian diary that is used by some sections of the Church. By endeavouring to do this he will alienate some, but enthuse others, with the scheme he is proposing. -
