Painting in by Nicholas Hely Hutchinson Connemara … What a revelation! I have painted in the West of Ireland many times, and had for some reason only made fleeting visits to County . So when I spent some time last year in Roundstone, in the heart of Connemara, I was so pleased to discover this part of Ireland. I would see the fishing boats from the windows each morning, on their way to the lobster pots in the bay. The sky around the harbour was filled with the screeching gulls and the scent of peat fires. I passed my days wandering by the shores, and along the winding roads. I stopped from time to time to make a drawing or to write some notes. These were rapid sketches of ragged sheep, ponies, stone walls, wild flowers and the long views to the distant hills. I discovered many new places, including the “bog road” from , , and Inishnee Island, and then I travelled further to the barren beauty of the . There is something about that wild windswept landscape and the clean Atlantic air that I find truly inspirational. One minute the hills are shrouded in heavy cloud, and then quite suddenly the sun breaks through, and the hillsides are lit up with vibrant colour. I have memories of little white houses, drifting cloud shadows, rainbows and empty strands. For this exhibition at the Oriel Gallery, which will be my eighth show in Dublin, I have also included a few recent paintings of the city. These paintings are a contrast to the pictures inspired by the West. I might be painting the magpies in Merrion Square on a cold March morning, or the evening light on the buildings by the Liffey, or just a small dog on a country road. Whatever the theme, town or country, the motivation is the same. I try to paint pictures that capture the atmosphere and essence of a place … moments that I find beautiful. Nicholas Hely Hutchinson

Born in 1955, Nicholas Hely Hutchinson studied at St. Martins School of Art and Bristol Polytechnic (Fine Art).

Since his first one-man exhibition in 1984 Nicholas has exhibited consistently in London, Dublin and Hong Kong. His paintings have increasingly become more in demand and now feature in many private and corporate collections.

He has been represented by the Portland Gallery since 1997. A range of cards and posters featuring his work have been published by the Art Group, The Canns Down Press, The Almanac Gallery and Paperlink.

Nicholas has two grown-up children, and lives with his wife, and two lurchers in Dorset. He gets much of his inspiration from the surrounding countryside and the coast. He also travels to some of his favourite places to paint – particularly Venice, Paris, the West of Ireland and Cornwall.

“I wake-up most mornings thinking about painting. Usually it is something that I have seen the day before … A long straight sunlit road, lined with telegraph poles … A sparrow hawk flips over the hedge … These are possible elements for a picture.

I am lucky to live in the middle of rural Dorset, not too far from the sea. The seasons and the constantly changing moods of the countryside are my inspiration. From large dramatic landscapes, where people and animals seem small under the passing clouds, to smaller things … A bird in a cold winter sky … This is what makes me want to paint … Moments of heartbreaking beauty, moments that take your breath away.” Nicholas Hely Hutchinson Cover.qxp_Layout 1 24/08/2018 17:27 Page 4
