Markey Robinson

A primitive painter, a colourful character, a man of great complexity - these are all descriptions which have been used to describe Markey Robinson over the years. Born in Belfast in 1918; Markey Robinson is regarded as one of the great Northern Masters. In a sixty year career, Markey’s unique and vibrant paintings fully demonstrate his genius for composition. His signature style and his range of themes are readily identifiable - rural landscapes, women in shawls and sad-looking clowns. His work has been seen far & wide, as far back as 1956, Markey exhibited work at the Salon des Independants in Paris and he is represented in many public and private collections around the globe. This present work is in all likelihood a self portrait, as Markey was a keen and capable boxer in his youth. Art Historian, Susan Stairs in her biography on Markey probably summed him up best when she said of him, ‘there is a genius in our midst’. 83

88 Arthur K Maderson

Born in 1942 in London, Arthur Maderson studied Fine Art from 1959 to 1963 at Camberwell School of Art, London, where in 1963 he won the Anna Berry Award in open competition with graduates from all leading art schools in England. Although Maderson continued to paint on a regular basis, it was only in 1982, at the age of 40 that he felt sufficiently confident to exhibit. From this period, he has enjoyed considerable success, and this success has been replicated in Ireland, where his reputation as a painter of distinction and passion is firmly established. He works at a frantic pace with dedication, determination and unflagging vigour, and now divides his time between his home in Ireland and a small hamlet high in a largely unpopulated mountainous region of the Cevenne, in the South of France. Arthur Maderson has exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, The Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Academy and he has represented Ireland in many prestigious exhibitions. Arthur Maderson is an outstanding artist of his generation.

John Shinnors Child in Interior - Resurrection Series (1978)

This large, impressive work offers the sense of Shinnors at his most enigmatic. Two figures confront us in an interior, perhaps a domestic, space. Here it is not just that the relationship between the figures implies a mystery, Each of the figures in themselves, as they are themselves constituted, are full of sense of the mysterious. The central front figure of a child/clown, seemingly sightless, anxiously reaches out into the dark space on its left and the blinding lights on its right. Its features are disguised by shapes that represent some kind of superimposed helmet or mask. The head and body of the second figure that lurks just behind, almost lost in the darks of the background, seem contorted into a cave-like hollow space and set on a plinth. He (so, it seems a ‘he’) wears military apparel and decorations; war medals - such as an eagle appear on his chest. Further back in the enclosed space we find details of furniture, ie. chair legs and backs, the scale of which helps to emphasise the dominant effect of the figures. This is a scene of the extra-ordinary, full of a dramatic sense of the uncanny, of a foreboding, similar to that of what today’s audience often enjoys in the stories offered by programmes like the X-files.

The literal – visual references made in the work are especially elusive and ambiguous but the emotions and mood represented in the work through the design priorities that Shinnors offers are definite and precise. Strong dramatic tonal contrasts are here given in an impressive vertical symmetry devoted to cool light green/blue greys that play against rich, warm, sienna and umber darks. A great variety of intense touches of red, blue, yellow and purple hues flash in these darks. No shape of any size lacks interest as a shape in itself or lacks a clearly assigned colour hue and temperature. A deliberate texture has been applied to the board support as a preparatory surface. This active regard for the all design elements as Shinnors brings them into play within the painting helps to explain the high level of success achieved.

The Start and The Finish are original illustrations used by Yeats’ sisters, Lily and Lolly, for their Arts and Crafts enterprise, the Cuala Press. Typical of Yeats’ work at the time, they adopt an elongated format, a strong outline and celebrate life in the West of Ireland with characteristic humour. The designs were issued as a line-block print, handcoloured by Yeats himself or by one of the craftswomen, at the Cuala Press. They proved very popular and issued as individual prints, Christmas cards and calendars. ‘The simplicity of the drawing is influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. The unpretentious style was very influential on Irish visual culture and the portrayal of rural Ireland in the early 20th century’ (Dr. Roisin Kennedy, February 2013). 146 146 ¤600 - ¤800 68 7th AUGUST 2017

Arthur K Maderson

Born in 1942 in London, Arthur Maderson studied Fine Art from 1959 to 1963 at Camberwell School of Art, London, where in 1963 he won the Anna Berry Award in open competition with graduates from all leading art schools in England. Although Maderson continued to paint on a regular basis, it was only in 1982, at the age of 40 that he felt sufficiently confident to exhibit. From this period, he has enjoyed considerable success, and this 158 Arthur K Maderson success has been replicated in Ireland, where his reputation as a painter b.1942 of distinction and passion is firmly established. He works at a frantic pace with dedication, determination and unflagging vigour, and now FARMER, TALLOW HORSE FAIR divides his time between his home in Ireland and a small hamlet high in Mixed Media a largely unpopulated mountainous region of the Cevenne, in the South of 45.5”x30.25” (115.5x77cm) France. Arthur Maderson has exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Signed The Royal West of England Academy and the Royal Academy and he has Signed & Inscribed Verso represented Ireland in many prestigious exhibitions. Arthur Maderson is an outstanding artist of his generation. ¤3,000 - ¤4,000

Sean Keating 1889 - 1978

Born in Limerick, Sean Keating studied drawing at Limerick Technical School. He won a scholarship in 1911 to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where he studied under Sir William Orpen. In 1914 he won the Taylor scholarship and went to visit the with his friend Harry Clarke. It was a turning point in his career as the islands and their inhabitants were to become the subjects of many of his paintings and drawings. In 1915 he succeeded in showing three of his paintings at the RHA and was elected an associate in 1919 and a full member in 1923. In 1919 he also began to teach at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. He was represented at the Royal Academy in 1924 and continued to exhibit there for the next thirty years. He represented Ireland at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. At home, Keating exhibited in the important exhibitions of his day, including the Victor Waddington Gallery in Dublin, the Hendriks Gallery, the Oireachtas, etc, He resigned from the presidency of the RHA in 1962 and the following year a retrospective exhibition was held at the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, opened by President De Valera. As an artist and a teacher he always took a firm stand on the side of traditional painting and was outspoken in his rejection of the modern movement. This strong and distinctive charcoal drawing presents a range of powerful characters, with strongly portrayed facial expressions and gestures and such work in charcoal and gouache is typical of the artists style in the 1960’s. A David Hendriks Gallery Label appears on this work. Keating had a successful one-man show in the Ritchie Hendriks Gallery on St Stephen’s Green in December 1956, the gallery subsequently becoming the David Hendriks Gallery in 1969, which likely helps us date this work to the late 1960’s. This strong and thought-provoking work portrays most likely West of Ireland men. Interested in symbolic themes, Keating frequently portrayed individual characters with strong lines and attention to detail. Much of his work is associated with the period of the foundation of the State and he is widely regarded as one of the most significant Irish artists of the 20th century.

With Nano Reid she represented Ireland in the 1950 Venice Biennale, and was elected an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1957, but later resigned. There was a retrospective of her work in the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Trinity College Dublin in 1968 and in 1973 the College awarded her an honorary doctorate. Her work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery and the National Library of Ireland, together with private and corporate collections worldwide.

261 Simeon Stafford

A painter of colourful, busy peopled scenes with the deceptively naïve style of L S Lowry, who became a friend and encouraged Stafford to paint while still a child. Born in 1956, in a small Cheshire town, Lowry became an inspiration to Stafford, and encouraged by this mentor, went on to study at Hyde College of Art. Having first exhibited his paintings as a child in his father’s greengrocers shop, by 1974 he was showing his work in London, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. In addition to painting, Stafford has also composed piano and orchestral works and former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair and the Queen of England have examples of his work in their private collections.

Rosemary Carr ROI

Rosemary Carr has been painting in Ireland since 1965, and since 1989 has been a full time member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. She has exhibited in London and Dublin, including the Royal Hibernian Academy, and of course in Connemara, where she lives. She always paints in the open air, and her use of paint and her palette knife work is exquisite. She captures the light and colour and mood of Connemara through each season, choosing her titles in a careful and considered manner.

403 404 Henry Morgan

Born in Adare, Co. Limerick in 1952, Henry Morgan studied at the Limerick School of Art and was awarded a scholarship to Oslo University. Since his return to Ireland, having completed a BA in Fine Art, he has exhibited extensively both at home and abroad and has been a regular exhibitor at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, The Royal Hibernian Academy, EVA in Limerick, among many others. Henry has been inspired by the local landscape from the Burren to the Clare Glens and the coast of Clare and beyond. These rugged landscapes feature strongly in his work, and he continues to carve his niche among the higher echelons of Irish Art. A contemporary artist of substance, his work is now included in many public and private collections.
