MELIORA...Always Better Inside this issue: This semester has been especially difficult for our nation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent natural disasters, including the numerous and devastating tornadoes in the mid- Meliora...Always Better 1 west. The OFSA is proud to recognize the following groups and individuals for fundraising, program- Supplemental Funding 1 ming, and coordinating efforts that have greatly contributed to the University-Wide Relief Efforts: Dinesh Apte, Greg Meditz, Natalie Modzelewski, Fraternity President's Council, Multicultural Greek Kudos Corner 1 Council, Delta Upsilon, Kappa Delta, Lambda Upsilon Lambda, Omega Phi Beta, Phi Kappa Tau, Phi What’s Been Going On? 2 Sigma Sigma, Pi Delta Psi, Sigma Alpha Mu, Sigma Delta Tau, Sigma Lambda Upsilon, Sigma Phi Theme Weeks/Weekends 2 Epsilon, Sigma Psi Zeta, and Theta Chi. Alongside the relief efforts, the fraternity and sorority community has been preparing for the implementation of the Expectations for Excellence plan which was created by the Fraternity and KUDOS CORNER— Sorority Standards Sub-Committee and affirmed by the Fraternity and Sorority Management Congratulations to our Committee on October 28, 2005. The five categories include Scholarship, Community Building and individual and chapter Leadership, Programming, Non-Academic Student Conduct, and Organizational Management which award winners! will provide a framework goal-setting and annual chapter self-assessment. The goal of the Expecta- tions for Excellence plan is to build a strong College-centered fraternity and sorority system by: Jessica N. Society Ovide Corriveau, Chair of SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR the Fraternity an Sorority FRATERNITIES AND SORORITIES Facilities and Finance There are two supplemental funding opportunities for most SA Recognized groups, including Sub-Committee: Fraternities and Sororities. To apply for either of these supplemental funds, you need to pick up an Goergen Award for Distinguished application at the SAAC office in the Ruth Merrill Center of Wilson Commons, office 101E. The Contributions to Undergraduate application must be completed and returned to that office no later than Friday at noon at least two Learning in the College weeks before the event. If your Sigma: National Total organization has an event that is open to the entire campus, but requires people to get to an off- Certificate from Phi Sigma Sigma campus venue, and is not a recruitment program, you can apply for money to defray that cost through the transportation fund. These funds are not to be used for weekly events, but rather one time special programs that will enhance campus life. WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON? Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs The Fall semester was kicked off by Alpha Delta Phi with their 2nd Annual Basketball Tournament for Freshman, Orientation Open Gym Night on August 28th. Monica Miranda Smalls, Director September was a very busy month with 15 programs listed on the Fraternity and Sorority David Clader, Program Coord./Graduate Asst. These programs included a Welcome Back party, BBQs, Movie Screenings, a Flag 510 Wilson Commons Football Tournament, a reception in honor of National Women’s Friendship Day and Rochester, NY 14627 Global Awareness, Latino Heritage Month programming and a few philanthropic and (585) 275-3167 (585) 276-0151 service events. e-mail: [email protected] October included Leadership Training hosted by both the Office of Fraternity http://www.rochester.edu/college/OFSA and Sorority Affairs (OFSA) and the Rochester Center for Community Leadership (RCCL) where members of the fraternity and sorority community were given tools to enhance their leadership and success. 11 chapters hosted over 17 programs over the course of 16 days. These programs included service opportunities and fund-raising ef- GO GREEK forts for Hurricane Relief. Educational programming included a “Poetry Slam”, “Dirty Coppers”, a United Nations Day Debate, a film on Human Trafficking, and lectures about Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse.
