Archeology in the Fontainebleau Forest François BEAUX
Archeology in the Fontainebleau Forest François BEAUX If you examine closely an archeological map showing all artifacts remaining from the ancient times in the South of the Seine-et-Marne department, you will see an « archeological hole » in the Fontainebleau Forest area. The dryness of the soil and the overall lack of water were in fact responsible for the very poor settlement rates of prehistorian and later humans in that area. Actually the late king Saint Louis (Louis the 9th), when speaking about this wood, said « my dear deserts ». Only some places nearby the Seine river, the Loing river and the water sources of the Ru de Changis were inhabitated. About the small hunting pavilion situated nerby the Fountain Belle Eau (or Belleau or Bliaud ?) we know nothing but that it was one of the ancient sites of settlement ; and that it gave birth to the future castle and later palace with the town around. However, the people dwelling around frequenly traveled through this area ; they left us many objects and traces on the stones proving their presence and showing that the forest (which was then called « Sylva Biera », i.e. « wood of Bière ») was not devoid of humans. PALEOLITHIC ERA (before 10,000 B.C.) Silex fragments and cut stones typical of the mousterian age with traces of cutting of the « Levallois » type have been found during a pedologic search in 1974 near the big cross of the Grand Veneur. Another fragment of the same type has been found at the Long Rocher site (figure 1). Those two artifacts are dated from the middle Paleolithic, i.e. -
Issues of Gender Representation in Modern Greek Art the Case of Thaleia Flora-Caravia’S Photographic Images and Self-Portraits
p Issues of Gender Representation in Modern Greek Art The Case of Thaleia Flora-Caravia’s Photographic Images and Self-Portraits Despoina Tsourgianni ABSTRACT There is a recent trend, mainly in the fi eld of historiography but also in art history, toward the exploration of female autobiographical discourse, whether it concerns writ- ten (autobiographies, correspondence), painted (self-portraits), or photographic data. On the basis of the highly fruitful gender perspective, this article seeks to present and interpret the numerous photographs of the well-known Greek painter Thaleia Flora- Caravia. These photographic recordings, taken almost exclusively from the painter’s unpublished personal archive, are inextricably linked to the artist’s self-portraits. This kind of cross-examination allows the reader to become familiar with the mosaic of roles and identities that constitutes the subjectivity of female artists in Greece in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. KEYWORDS: autobiography, female artist, modern Greek art, photography, self-portrait p Introduction No opening words could be more appropriate to introduce a study on twentieth- century artist representation than the verses of Rainer Maria Rilke on the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker: So free of curiosity your gaze had become, so unpossessive, of such true poverty, it no longer desired even you yourself; it wanted nothing: holy.1 aspasia Volume 13, 2019: 31–64 doi:10.3167/asp.2019.130105 32 DESPOINA TSOURGIANNI It is of key importance to note the way in which this emblematic poet of modernity perceives the ideal depiction of oneself: as one being stripped of any vanity that leads to the beautifi cation of physical characteristics. -

Erich Mercker and “Technical Subjects”: Industrial Painting in the Eras of Weimar and Nazi Germany
H-Labor-Arts Erich Mercker and “Technical Subjects”: Industrial Painting in the Eras of Weimar and Nazi Germany Discussion published by Patrick Jung on Saturday, October 7, 2017 (Copyright 2008, Society of Industrial Archeology and reprinted with permission) From the author: This article was published earlier in Industrial Archaeology: The Journal of the Society for Industrial Archeology, vol. 34, nos. 1 & 2. It is reproduced here on H-Labor Arts to make it available to a wider audience. I wrote this article while I was in the midst of finishing a book-length manuscript on Erich Mercker, who was, undoubtedly, one of the top industrial artists in Germany from 1919 to 1945. He and his contemporaries (e.g., Fritz Gärtner, Franz Gerwin, Ria Picco-Rückert, Leonhard Sandrock, and Richard Gessner) constituted a school of artists who I have provisionally labeled the “Heroic School” of German industrial art from 1919 to 1945. The Grohmann Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has paintings produced by virtually all of these artists. It also has more than 90 paintings by Erich Mercker, more than any other art museum in the world. Thus, it is fitting this article should appear on the H-Labor Arts site titled “From the Grohmann….” I also hope this essay will spur more research into Mercker and his “Heroic School” contemporaries, all of whom produced some of the most stunning examples of industrial art during the course of the early twentieth century. Those interested in reading the full-length biography on Erich Mercker (for which this article paved the way) should contact the Grohmann Museum at [email protected]. -

Das herausragende Geschenk umfasste zahlreiche Werke von Wassily Kandinsky bis 1914, von Münter selbst sowie Arbeiten von Künstlerkolleg*innen aus dem erweiterten Kreis des Blauen Reiter.
