Zu einer umfassenden Filmbildung gehört die Beschäftigung mit der Filmgeschichte, um neuere Filme dekodieren und das tiefere Verständnis dieser Kunstform durchdringen zu können. Mit der Reihe „Klassiker sehen – Filme verstehen“ will die Deutsche Filmakademie in Kooperation mit der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung die Begegnung von Jugendlichen mit Klassikern initiieren und nachhaltig fördern. Zum Programm „Klassiker des Vampirfilms“ Der Vampirfilm ist seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ein populäres Filmgenre, das mit seinen aktuellen Produktionen gerade bei Jugendlichen besonders beliebt ist. Die fünf, auf Romanen der US-Autorin Stephenie Meyer basierenden Filme der TWILIGHT SAGA, in der eine gruselig-romantische Vampir- geschichte im Mittelpunkt steht, haben von 2008 bis 2012 nach Angaben des Branchendienstes Box Office Mojo weltweit über drei Milliarden Zuschauer/innen ins Kino gelockt. Von der Kritik wurde die Filmreihe jedoch weniger wohlwollend aufgenommen und überwiegend als künstlerisch substanzlos bewertet. Andere Filme des Genres gelten dagegen heutzutage als Filmkunst- werke, die in Bezug auf Erzählweise und Ästhetik einen wichtigen Platz in der Filmgeschichte einnehmen. Zwei dieser Filme – der eine aus der Stummfilmzeit, der andere aus den 1960er-Jahren – stellt dieses Double Feature vor. NOSFERATU – EINE SYMPHONIE DES GRAUENS (D 1921/22, R: Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau) ist einer der frühesten Horrorfilme, der aufgrund seiner visuellen Gestaltungselemente durch Licht- und Schatten- führung und seiner traumartig beängstigenden Inszenierung auch als einer der bedeutendsten Stumm- filme der Weimarer Republik gilt. THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS (TANZ DER VAMPIRE, GB 1967, R: Roman Polanski) ist eine Horrorkomödie, die auf vergnügliche Weise Inhalte des Genres parodiert, dabei aber auch filmische Elemente der frühen Filmgeschichte, wie stumme Slapsticksequenzen oder nur von Musik untermalte Szenen, verwendet. Beide Filme zeigen beispielhaft, wie eine Geschichte – in diesem Fall der Vampirmythos – auf unter- schiedliche formale und inhaltliche Weise in verschiedenen Jahrzehnten und dem jeweiligen Zeitgeist gemäß für die Leinwand adaptiert wurden. Genaueres dazu findet sich in den vorbereitenden Texten (I. VOR DEM SCREENING, S. 6-23) und zu den einzelnen Filmen (II. SCREENING S. 24-37). VOR DEM SCREENING Hinweise für Lehrende Themenschwerpunkt Vampirmythos / Vampirfilme Spätestens seit dem Erfolg der TWILIGHT- Filmreihe, die besonders bei jungen Zuschauer/innen großen Erfolg hatte, dürfte nahezu allen Schüler/innen der Vampirmythos geläufig sein. Insofern kann man da- von ausgehen, dass sie mehrheitlich die Eigenschaften des Vampirs und seiner „Lebensbedingungen“ kennen. Die damit im Zusammenhang stehenden Elemente von Erotik, Sexualität und Gewalt sind mehr oder weniger offensichtlich – ob dies von den Schüler/innen aber auch reflektiert wird, sei dahingestellt. Ein sensibel geführtes Gespräch zu diesem Thema bietet sich im Vorfeld wie auch nach der Filmvorführung der beiden Hauptfilme oder der Bezugsfilme an. Die expliziten sexuellen Konnotationen, die einen Teil des Vampirmythos ausmachen und in der Fachliteratur wiederholt analysiert werden, müssen dabei nicht vollständig ausgelotet

    THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART 14 WEST 49TH STREET, NEW YORK TEUEPHONE: CIRCLE 7-7470 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Legends to the contrary notwithstanding, the negative of Erich von Stroheim's much-discussed film, Greed, has been preserved in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's vaults and it has therefore been possible to include this celebrated "masterpiece of realism" in the Museum of Modern Art Film Libraryfs current Series IV, The Swedish Film and Post-War American Films, Greed will be shown to Museum members on Wednesday, February 23rd, at 8:45 P.M. in the auditorium of the American Museum of Natural History, 77th Street and Central Park West. Thereafter it will be available to students of the film in i colleges and museums throughout the country. Greed, a faithful transcription into pictorial terms of Frank Norris1 novel, "McTeague," was created under unusual circumstances and met with a curious fate. It was not made in a studio, but on location in San Francisco. Whole blocks and houses were purchased as settings , walls knocked out to make the photography of real in­ teriors practicable. Every detail of the novel was reproduced at considerable expense of time and money, with a passionate and un­ compromising care for veracity. Eventually von Stroheim offered his producers his finished work, a final cut print twenty reels long which he proposed they should issue in two parts, and which bore no perceptible trace of those elements usually reckoned as "box office. The film was taken from him, cut down to the present ten reel ver­ sion and so released.

The book, consisting of over 400 photographs, with a foreword by Herman G. Weinberg, who compiled and annotated it, is the only record of the entire film, originally made in 42 reels, nine and one- half hours long. The version that was eventually released, circa two-and-a-half hours, now comes from the Museum archives, and will have five performances, starting Thursday, June 8 at 2:00 p. m„ and at 7:00 p.m., when Mr. Wein­ berg, the author, who is a professor of cinema and a lecturer, will show slides from the miss­ ing portions of the picture and discuss the saga of the making of "Greed." Au temps où il était metteur en scène et où le cinéma ne parlait pas encore, Erich von Stroheim a réalisé neuf films. Il s’était fait le champion du naturalisme et serait entré en fureur s’il avait pu prévoir qu’on oserait un jour mettre en avant l’élément comique de son oeuvre. Il va de soi que la drôlerie de certains effets est parfois apparue avec le temps. Par exemple dans Queen Kelly , lorsqu’un filet de jus de chique tombe de la bouche du vieux planteur sur la main de la couventine. Ou dans le cauchemar de Blind Husbands , lorsque le visage du lieutenant grossit en ricanant. Le répugnant et l’effrayant ne sont plus ce qu’ils étaient ! It gives me great pleasure to report that film preservation is growing into a truly national movement. As our fifth year of operations begins, the NFPF has enabled 63 institutions across 27 states and the District of Columbia to preserve historically and culturally significant films in their collections. All told, we have helped save more than 400 American films and footage collections. In addition, we have given publications produced through our programs to libraries in every state and shared films preserved by American archives by licensing them for national television exhibition. Generations to come will continue to enjoy the results. A key factor in this success has been the federal matching funding authorized by our founding legislation. In 2001 we received the second annual allocation of $250,000, which we distributed through competitive grants to nonprofit and public organizations across the United States.
