Medical Director, UW Med Flight

The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health seeks qualified applicants for the leadership position of Medical Director for UW Med Flight, a premier air and ground critical care transport and retrieval service.

The successful candidate for this full-time faculty position will be board-certified in emergency medicine, experienced in air and ground transport, and eager to undertake an exceptional leadership opportunity in academic medicine. This position will provide leadership and direction for transport operations in a manner that promotes a safe, inclusive environment for all employees.

The candidate will work closely with a highly trained team of emergency medicine physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and specialty providers with critical care training to direct adult and pediatric critical care transport by ground and air at three regional bases operating three EC-145 aircraft and two critical care ambulances 24/7/365.

Med Flight has served the upper Midwest for over 35 years and logs more than 1,700 transports per year. Our program is CAMTS- certified and has long been recognized in air medical circles for its success in providing one of the safest air medical transport services in the country. We partner with leading FAA-certified and industry-accredited Metro Aviation, Inc. to maintain, operate and pilot Med Flight aircraft. We are one of only a few programs in the country to transport with a licensed physician routinely on board. Our ground ambulances transport patients of any age and are equipped as mobile ICU/NICU, and we operate a busy air and ground Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Transport Program.

Med Flight is housed within UW Health, the integrated health system of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. UW Health’s University Hospital, a busy Level I adult and pediatric trauma and burn center, has been named the #1 hospital in Wisconsin for the last ten years by U.S. News and World Report.

The candidate will oversee the Med Flight section within the Division of Prehospital Medicine, which includes approximately 30 physician faculty and fellows. The Medical Director will be responsible for leading and developing a knowledgeable and experienced team of physicians. The successful candidate will be adept at leading groups and individuals within a large organization and able to establish positive interpersonal and professional relationships. If appropriately qualified, the successful candidate may be promoted to serve as the Division Chief of Prehospital Medicine upon hire.

Administrative time will be devoted to ensuring that air medical and ground specialty care clinical operations are run ethically and soundly. The Medical Director will direct and oversee program certification and credentialing and ensure compliance of the medical operations programs (e.g., quality, patient safety, etc.) and that all processes adhere to all relevant laws, regulations and policies. The Medical Director will endeavor to grow transport volumes, foster and strengthen relationships with referring partners, and partner with other clinical and operational leaders to evaluate opportunities for program development and expansion.

Academic responsibilities of this position will include educating medical students, residents, fellows, as well as community members and stakeholders through paramedic trainings and outreach events. The Medical Director will have access to a newly renovated and expanded clinical simulation center for the advancement of interdisciplinary simulation training and education. Lastly, the Medical Director will support and encourage research advancing the science of prehospital medicine.
